'It's on the management': Former NHL executive slams Maple Leafs management for letting Mitch Marner walk away after nine seasons
The Toronto Maple Leafs are facing a storm of criticism following Mitch Marner's shocking departure, and this time, it's not coming from fans or analysts—it's from a former NHL Assistant General Manager.
As the dust settles on Marner's blockbuster sign-and-trade deal with the Vegas Golden Knights, the blame is squarely being placed on the shoulders of Toronto's front office.
Craig Button
calls out Leafs brass for failing to back
Mitch
Marner
Craig Button, a respected voice in hockey circles, did not hold back in his assessment of Marner's exit. According to Button, the 28-year-old winger—who recently signed an eight-year, $96 million extension with Vegas—was let down by a management group that failed to protect and support one of their franchise stars.
'It's on the management,' Button declared. 'You can look at the team and go, 'Okay, Mitch Marner is the reason you didn't win.' Well, if that's the case, be careful, because I don't think that's the reason… Bottom line for Toronto is they weren't deep enough to win with Marner and Matthews and all those guys. It's on the management. That's not on the players.'
What do you think of Marner's deal and fit with Golden Knights?
Button also questioned why General Manager Brad Treliving didn't prioritize retaining Marner earlier, noting: 'Could it have been avoided with Brad saying, 'Hey Mitch, we want to sign you'? I don't know why the Leafs wouldn't want to sign Mitch Marner.'

Leafs move on without one of their top scorers
Marner leaves Toronto after a nine-season run where he tallied 741 points—including 102 in his final year. Despite his offensive brilliance, the Leafs only managed two playoff series wins during the 'Core Four' era with Marner, Matthews, Nylander, and Tavares. While John Tavares was re-signed, Marner seemed poised to leave and ultimately did—landing with Vegas via a sign-and-trade deal that brought Nicolas Roy to Toronto.
In an emotional message to fans, Marner reflected: 'Leaving isn't easy… This city is where I grew up, where I fell in love with hockey, and where I've had the incredible honour of living out my childhood dream.'

'Adults allowed it': Cam Newton blasts Geno Smith over viral OT7 jersey stomp incident
Cam Newton reacts to OT7 drama (Image credits: IG/X) Cam Newton has addressed the controversy that erupted at the OT7 tournament, where players from the South Florida Express were caught on camera stomping on his Auburn jersey. The act, seen as deeply disrespectful, occurred just before a high-stakes 7-on-7 game between South Florida Express and Newton's team, C1N. While C1N went on to win the game 39-17, the heated debate over sportsmanship and adult supervision quickly stole the spotlight. Newton takes aim at coaching conduct, not the kids The former NFL MVP didn't hold back as he took aim at Geno Smith, who was coaching the South Florida Express during the incident. Newton made it clear that he doesn't blame the young players for the stunt, but rather the adults who allowed it to happen. His comments came during the latest episode of the 4th&1 podcast, where he gave his take on the incident that went viral online. Skip Bayless gets FREAKY, Cowboys ALL-IN on Parsons & Cam SLAMS SHAMEFUL Jersey Stomping 'My issue isn't with the kids. My issue is with the adult that allowed the kids to do it,' Newton stated at the 21:30 mark of the episode. He emphasized that the responsibility lies with the leadership, not the youth involved in the act. Newton added that had the roles been reversed, he would have immediately intervened. Newton demands accountability from adults on the sidelines The 2015 NFL MVP explained that he only learned about Smith's involvement with the SFE program recently. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Providers are furious: Internet access without a subscription! Techno Mag Learn More Undo What troubled Newton most was the perceived lack of accountability from the coaching side, especially from someone with NFL status. He questioned how a figure like Smith could let such a blatant display of disrespect go unchecked. 'Now, I didn't know Geno Smith's involvement with South Florida Express prior to this past week. But if the C1N kids had a Geno Smith jersey, and they proceeded to stomp on it, I would've stopped it instantly,' Newton said. 'So when I see actions like these ... there was an adult behind this and they allowed it. And that's what was most disrespectful about this whole situation.'
