Markus Jooste's Hermanus home hits the market

A landmark property in Hermanus owned by the Rupert family and the late former Steinhoff CEO Markus Jooste has been listed for sale at a staggering R105 million – a figure expected to break sales records along the Whale Coast. Located in the prestigious Voëlklip area, the estate sits within one of Hermanus's most exclusive enclaves and boasts panoramic views of Walker Bay, famed globally for its whale-watching. The listing is being managed by Seeff Properties, which described it as a 'legacy property' and 'one of the most significant coastal residential holdings' in the region. According to Paul Kruger, licensee for Seeff Hermanus, the estate spans 7 000 square metres across a rare double plot – an offering that is 'virtually unheard of' in the high-demand Voëlklip suburb. The estate comprises a manor house with bespoke interiors and multiple additional residences, all styled in the elegant Cape vernacular tradition. 'This property offers unmatched space, privacy, and grandeur,' Kruger said, adding that its history imbues it with 'a rich heritage of understated elegance and a deep connection to Hermanus's pristine natural beauty.' The estate previously served as a holiday retreat for the Rupert family, one of South Africa's most influential business dynasties. However, Seeff confirmed that Markus Jooste, the disgraced former CEO of Steinhoff International, also held ownership. Jooste committed suicide in 2024, shortly after receiving a R475 million administrative penalty from South Africa's Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) in the wake of Steinhoff's corporate collapse due to financial misconduct. With its exceptional location, scale, and history, the property is expected to attract significant interest from high-net-worth buyers, both local and international. Its R105 million price tag positions it to set a new record for residential sales in Hermanus. 'This is not just a home – it's a piece of South African coastal heritage,' Kruger added. #BestofBallito: Phumlani Construction is building a stronger future

Phumlani Construction Group is shaping the North Coast skyline, one award-winning project at a time. Voted Best Building and Construction Company in the Best of Ballito Readers' Choice Awards, the company's reputation is built on quality craftsmanship and structures designed to stand the test of time. 'Our philosophy is that anything we construct should be a building for life,' said Phumlani Construction Group owner, Phumlani Gobile. 'Owners might change, the paint will be updated and new furniture will fill out the space, but our structures are built to outlast them all.' While Gobile welcomes residential and commercial projects across South Africa, the business has largely been focused on domestic work along the North Coast since its launch in 2019. Phumlani Construction Group offers a full turnkey solution, handling construction and site management from the planning stage through to final handover. 'We have built strong relationships with past clients during and after their projects, and we are very focused on clear communication and meeting deadlines,' said Gobile. 'That is only possible with the help of an excellent team and I am incredibly grateful for the work my guys do every day. Likewise, thank you to everyone who voted for us and for consistently supporting us over the past six years. It is a blessing to be busy.' Phumlani Construction Group offers a wide range of general construction services. A full list can be found at Contact them at [email protected] or 071 359 2145. #BestofBallito: DOCRRA wins top civic honour

DOCCRA's tireless advocacy has earned it the community's vote of confidence, reflecting growing public support for civic accountability. The Dolphin Coast Residents and Ratepayers Association (DOCRRA) was voted Best Business Networking Organisation in The North Coast Courier Best of Ballito Readers' Choice Awards. The recognition caps a year of significant achievements for this voluntary civic group. DOCRRA was instrumental in triggering two government oversight inquiries into the governance challenges facing KwaDukuza Municipality, by CoGTA and NERSA. Its sustained lobbying and public engagement also contributed to leadership changes at the highest level. 'This award means so much because we were nominated and chosen by the people we serve. It's the best endorsement we could hope for,' said chairman Deon Viljoen. DOCRRA has over 6 000 members and represents major estates across the Dolphin Coast. It also forms part of the broader KwaDukuza Organised Residents Alliance (KORA), which advocates for over 40 000 households across the region. Twelve volunteer sub-committees cover key areas of concern, from municipal finance and infrastructure upgrades to environmental protection, electrical network repairs and safety initiatives on beaches and streets. Empowerment programmes in underserved communities are also part of their mandate. 'The rolling crises in our municipality have driven a sharp increase in support and membership,' said Viljoen. 'Residents now realise that preserving and improving our community requires their active participation.' He said organisations like DOCRRA and KORA are vital for maintaining clean, competent administration at all levels. 'This award is not just a tribute to DOCRRA, it reflects a reviving culture of service and civic responsibility. We are proud to be part of building a better Dolphin Coast for everyone.'
