Sze Fei-Izzuddin survive early scare in Indonesia Open
PETALING JAYA : World No 1 men's doubles pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani overcame an early scare to defeat Taiwan's Lee Fang Chih-Lee Fang Jen in the opening round of the Indonesia Open.
The 19th ranked Taiwanese twins had shocked the top seeds by taking the first game, before the Malaysians made a comeback to win 17-21, 21-17, 21-14 at the Istora Stadium in Jakarta tonight.
Sze Fei-Izzuddin had to labour for an hour before they sealed the match and booked their berth in the last 16.
The Malaysians have faced setback after setback this year, failing to get past the quarter-final stage in various tournaments, including two first-round exits.
The duo won three World Tour titles in 2023 and another three in 2024, but have not won a single one this year.
Today's tie was Sze Fei-Izzuddin's seventh time facing the Taiwanese pair, with the Malaysians winning six of the encounters.
In the last 16, Sze Fei-Izzuddin will take on their world No 22 compatriots Nur Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong, who staged an upset by beating the No 14 ranked Chinese duo of Xie Hao Nan-Zeng Wei Han 21-17, 21-12.
Fellow men's doubles pair Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun also progressed to the last 16 after making light work of American duo Chen Zhi Yi-Presley Smith, winning 21-6, 21-11 in just 21 minutes.
The Malaysians will meet compatriots Junaidi Arif-Yap Roy King, who received a walkover from French pair Eloi Adam-Leo Rossi.

SEOUL, Aug 2 — Tottenham captain Son Heung-min said today that he will leave the club this summer after a decade in north London. Speaking in Korean, Son said that winning a European trophy—Tottenham's first European crown in 41 years—played 'a big part' in his thinking. 'Winning a title in Europe felt like I had achieved everything I possibly could,' he said. 'I spent a lot of time reflecting on whether I wanted to experience football in a different environment, and I had those conversations with myself over and over again.' Frank, who joined Spurs from Brentford in June, paid tribute to the South Korean skipper. 'For me, personally, I would have loved to have worked with this fantastic person and player,' said the Dane, who took over from the sacked Ange Postecoglou. 'He is a true Spurs legend in every aspect, one of the greatest players to play in the Premier League.' Spurs will face Newcastle United on Sunday in Seoul, and Son is guaranteed a rapturous reception in front of his home fans. Tawau fire razes 26 homes but firefighters save 1,300 in Kampung Kurnia Jaya
TAWAU, Aug 2 — The swift action by the fire brigade here saved 1,300 houses in Kampung Kurnia Jaya here from being gutted, albeit 26 houses which were razed in a blaze which broke out yesterday morning. Tawau Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) operations officer Madzlan Sharman said the fire alarm rang at 9.37am and 39 personnel in five operation vehicles including two Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) engines were deployed to the scene. 'At the village, the firemen carried out extinguishing operations using seawater and water from our fire-brigade tanks,' he said in a statement here today. According to him, there were no casualties as all the residents in the village managed to escape and the operation ended at 11.45 am. Madzlan said the cause of the fire and damages were still under investigation. — Bernama

In an interview with Malay Mail yesterday, Lingling admitted to an emotional return home, with fans on social media showing their love and support. 'We've debuted for two months now, but before going overseas, we didn't really feel like celebrities,' Lingling told Malay Mail. 'But when we met our fans in Singapore and Malaysia, that's when it finally hit us — we're celebrities now.' She also reflected on how life in Korea differs, especially when it comes to public transportation. 'In Korea, I feel like I can literally go anywhere without a car, just by taking the subway or walking. 'These days I really love walking so much — it's been really fun,' she said.
