Tadej Pogacar and Mauritius' Kim Le Court claim Liège-Bastogne-Liège glory

The Guardian27-04-2025
Tadej Pogacar launched one of his trademark uphill attacks to win the Liège–Bastogne–Liège classic race for the third time on Sunday.
The defending champion made his move some 35 kilometers (22 miles) from the end of the undulating 252km (156 mile) trek to open up a gap of 10 seconds at the top, and then kept increasing it all the way to the line.
It was his third victory overall at the spring classic race, which is also one of the five 'monuments' in one-day cycling along with Paris-Roubaix on the cobbles, the Tour of Lombardy, Milan-San Remo and the Tour of Flanders. Pogacar now has nine 'monument' victories.
The Slovenian was so far ahead Sunday that he even had time to turn and smile at the roadside camera filming him, then touched hands with fans near the finish before raising his arms in the air with victory assured.
Pogacar won in just over six hours and finished one minute, three seconds ahead of Italian Giulio Ciccone in second and Irishman Ben Healy in third. Ciccone and Healy contested a sprint to the line for second place.
In decent racing conditions, Pogacar's UAE Team-Emirates teammates increased the speed at the front of the main pack and the peloton caught a small group of front-runners with 60 kilometers to go, and with the main favourites still in contention.
But when Pogačar surged ahead on the Côte de La Redoute climb, no rider could follow him. It was a similar story to Wednesday, when Pogacar launched a trademark uphill attack to win the Flèche Wallonne classic for the second time.
It was a disappointing race for the two-time champion, Remco Evenepoel, as the Belgian rider was dropped by Pogacar up the Redoute climb. Evenepoel could not gain any time back and instead dropped down to finish in 59th place, 3min 11sec behind Pogačar.
The Mauritian rider Kim Le Court won the women's race for the first time as four riders contested a sprint finish.
The 2023 champion, Demi Vollering, attacked first but Le Court countered her and then held off Dutch rider Puck Pieterse, who won the Flèche Wallonne classic on Wednesday.
Pieterse finished second ahead of compatriot Vollering and French rider Cédrine Kerbaol in fourth. The four riders completed the 152.9km (94.8 mile) route in four hours, 15 minutes and 42 seconds. It was the first classics win for the 29-year-old Le Court.
Kerbaol broke ahead near the end and led by 14 seconds with 11 kilometers left and threatened to extend her advantage, but Pieterse went after her. The world road race champion, Lotte Kopecky of Belgium, could not follow and cracked in the final climb up Roche-aux-Faucons.
But Pieterse, Vollering and Le Court caught Kerbaol with a few kilometers remaining to make it a four-way sprint finish. Kopecky rolled in fifth, 24 seconds behind.

Tadej Pogacar crushes rivals in time trial to solidify Tour de France lead

Tadej Pogacar delivered another crushing defeat to his Tour de France rivals by dominating an uphill time trial and reinforcing his grip on the yellow jersey on Friday. The brutal effort in the Pyrenees mountains was all about strength and stamina. It was just a painful experience offering no respite after already 12 gruelling stages of racing. Riders first covered 2.9km to reach the bottom of the climb to Peyragudes, a daunting 8km ramp with a steep gradient. On that brutal terrain, Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) reigned supreme and killed any suspense. He increased his lead in the general classification to more than four minutes. 'I really wanted to go all out from start to finish, smashing the pedals as much as possible,' he said. 'I almost blew out in the end but I saw the time on the finish arch and it gave me an extra push because I saw I was going to win.' It was the Slovenian's 21st stage win at cycling's biggest race. Setting off last, the three-time Tour champion was faster than everyone else on the flat section, putting five seconds into time trial world champion Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick-Step). Jonas Vingegard (Visma-Lease a Bike) was eight seconds off the pace through the first time check. Pogacar was even better as soon as the road started to climb and he crossed the finish line at Peyragudes with a lead of 36 seconds over Vingegaard, his closest challenger. Primoz Roglic (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) was third, 1min 20sec off the pace. Pogacar said he rode 'on instinct,' having decided not to use the race radio. 'I suffered a bit with three kilometres to go. I took a deep breath and recovered some power because I knew the last kick was super steep and I wanted to have somewhat good legs,' he added. Evenepoel cracked in the climb and was overtaken by Vingegaard, who started his effort two minutes after his Belgian rival. Pogacar cemented his grip on the race during Thursday's first big mountain stage on the slopes of Hautacam, where he desgroyed the field to take the stage win and reclaim the yellow jersey. Overall, he has a 4min 7sec lead over Vingegaard. He has been in dominant form since the start of the season and, barring an accident, his current form leaves little doubt about who will be wearing the yellow jersey when the race finishes in Paris on July 27. 'So far, so good,' Pogacar said. 'We're just a bit over halfway now and it's still a long way to Paris but if we keep riding like this and don't do any mistake, then we can be satisfied with this margin.' Evenepoel salvaged his third place overall, 7min 24sec behind the race leader, but he was under threat from Florian Lipowitz (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), just six more seconds back in fourth place. After taking a beating in Hautacam, Vingegaard conceded more time to Pogacar but reassured himself by limiting his losses in the time trial. Unlike Pogacar who used a road bike, Vingegaard opted for a time-trial machine and used an aerodynamically designed helmet. 'Yesterday was one of my worst performances and today was one of my best,' Vingegaard said. 'The Tour is far from over. We have to keep believing we can do something here in the race.' The peloton faces another day of suffering during Saturday's stage 14 from Pau to Luchon-Superbagnères. It features four major climbs, including the final ascent to the ski resort of Superbagnères, which is more than 12kmn long.

Tour de France: Pogacar pulls more than four minutes clear with stage 13 victory

Tadej Pogacar continued his charge towards an anticipated fourth Tour de France title when he stretched his overall lead to over four minutes by winning the 13th stage, a lung-busting 10.9km uphill time trial on Friday. The defending champion dominated the eight-kilometre climb at 7.9% to clock 23mins and beat Denmark's Jonas Vingegaard by a massive 36secs, a day after leaving his closest rival shattered in the first major mountain stage in the Pyrenees. Fellow Slovenian Primoz Roglic took third place, 1min 40secs off the pace, while Belgian Remco Evenepoel hung on to third place overall by the skin of his teeth following a disappointing effort that saw him finish 2min 39secs behind Pogacar. After his fourth stage win in this year's race, UAE Team Emirates-XRG rider Pogacar leads Vingegaard by 4mins 7secs and Evenepoel by 7min 24secs. German Florian Lipowitz showed great form again and trails Evenepoel by six seconds. Jeremy Whittle's report to follow

Arsenal complete £48m signing of Noni Madueke from Chelsea

The 23-year-old is understood to have signed a five-year deal at the Emirates, taking him through to the summer of 2030. It is expected that England international Madueke will provide competition to Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli in Arsenal's wide areas. Madueke's move across London – which could exceed £52m with performance-related add-ons – has been met with severe criticism by Arsenal supporters on social media. A petition against the transfer has attracted more than 5,000 signatures. Talent in abundance. Noni Madueke is a Gunner ✍️ Narrated by artist and Arsenal in the Community alumni, Stazzy 🎙️ — Arsenal (@Arsenal) July 18, 2025 Addressing the 'vulgar' toxicity on 'X', former Manchester United and England captain Rio Ferdinand wrote: 'For a young 23-year-old English footballer to be vilified, bullied, embarrassed and totally stripped down at a time when you're meant to be celebrating a transfer worth £55 million. 'To be treated in this manner via a section of the Arsenal fan base is an utter disgrace. 'Just put yourself in his shoes for one minute. Just put yourself in his parents shoes for one minute, and just think of how that feeling must be. I just hope the people that are closest to him are around him and supporting him in the way that he needs right now. 'It's fine for fans to disagree with signings or decisions made at their football club but the way some fans have publicly voiced their opinions and those who have gone a step further in publicly joining a petition for this player not to be signed by their football club is beyond me. 'I have never seen anything like this before, and I hope I don't ever again. Like I said earlier just imagine this was your best friend, one of your family members, your brother, son, then tell me how would you feel if they were on the receiving end of this vulgar behaviour? 'I just hope Noni Madueke rams all of this negativity back down the throats of these impostors.' Noni Madueke has left Chelsea to join Arsenal (Jane Barlow/PA) Madueke left Chelsea's eventual Club World Cup winning campaign in the United States last Friday to undergo his medical at Arsenal and put the finishing touches on his controversial move. Posting on Instagram, Madueke said: 'Dear Chelsea Football Club, I want to thank you for the last three or so years. To every staff member that helped me along this journey, thank you. To my team-mates thank you for everything. I leave with only love and admiration for you guys. We achieved so much this season and I honestly wish you guys nothing but the best. 'To (Chelsea manager) Enzo Maresca, it was a privilege to play under you, thank you for trying to better me as a player and as a person. Lastly, thank you to every single Chelsea fan. Thank you for the love, the praise and also the criticism. I appreciate it all. I leave here with nothing but fond memories.' Madueke scored 11 times for Chelsea across all competitions last season and was rewarded with his first senior international appearances under England interim manager Lee Carsley, and his permanent successor Thomas Tuchel. Madueke, who made the switch to Stamford Bridge from PSV Eindhoven in 2023, follows Spain midfielder Martin Zubimendi and goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga – who also joined from Chelsea – and Christian Norgaard in moving to the Emirates in the off-season. Arsenal also remain hopeful of signing striker Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon, although it is not believed that a deal – which could be worth as much as £65m – is imminent. Madueke will join up with his new team-mates when they depart for their tour of Singapore and Hong Kong on Saturday evening.
