VW Tayron review: seven seats and 600 miles on a single tank

Volkswagen's latest sports utility vehicle has lots of good points — spacious, practical and less ugly than its rivals — but no one is talking about it, possibly because it has the least memorable name in motoring history. The Tayron follows the Taigun, Taos, Tiguan, T-Roc, T-Cross and Touareg — all two-syllable names beginning with T and all easily confused. The industry joke is that VW's next two models will the Taser and the Toenail. What's behind this naming strategy no one at the company's group HQ seems able to say, but the Tayron deserves better because it's a seven-seater SUV that can go for up to 600 miles between fill-ups on just a 55-litre tank, an impressive rate of up to 50mpg.
Automotive technology has progressed in leaps and bounds, and no more so than in cutting fuel consumption of bigger cars. And the Tayron is big — a veritable warehouse on wheels. If you've ever faced the problem that the stuff you stow in your boot to take on holiday mysteriously swells in volume and won't fit when it's time to return, the Tayron may be the answer. Collapsing the second and third rows of seats gives you nearly two cubic metres of storage — enough for a couple of washing machines or a decent-sized wardrobe. Even with all the seats in place there's as much luggage room as in a Mercedes A-class. Short of buying a van, it's hard to think of a vehicle that offers more boot for your buck.
For its size it's reasonably inexpensive too, starting at £40,130 for the 'Life' trim. But there's a catch: £40,000 is the threshold for the government's 'expensive car supplement', or luxury car tax, which means it will cost you an extra £425 a year in vehicle excise duty for five years. Yet the Tayron is hardly the epitome of mink-lined opulence. It's actually a rather practical and down-to-earth family bus that's cheaper than the £45,218 average price of a new petrol car. The eTSI version is powered by an ingenious combination of 1.5-litre combustion engine and an electric motor that gives extra oomph when you're accelerating, then, when you're slowing down, it charges the car's battery. The energy recovery system is linked to the car's electronic brain and knows when you're approaching a junction or entering a lower speed limit. As you lift your foot off the accelerator it reduces your speed at a controlled rate, turning the car's momentum into electricity. It's an odd sensation at first, as though there are phantom feet on the pedals, but you can override it at any time by putting your foot back on the throttle.

And here's the rub. Pressured by governments into lowering fuel consumption, carmakers have been inventive in coming up with new hybrid engine designs such as this to eke out the miles. In doing so they've become victims of their own success. More miles per gallon equals less fuel duty for Treasury coffers. So governments are imposing new taxes such as the luxury car tax to plug the gap.
For a jumbo SUV, the Tayron is remarkably easy to drive around town, relentlessly cushioning speed bumps and potholes. It's also good on motorways, where at cruising speed it's silent, boring even, thanks to acoustic insulation and double-glazed glass. The only time it gets noisy is when you mash your foot into the floor mat getting up to speed on a motorway slip road. Then the 1.5-litre engine struggles even with electrical assistance.
The Tayron's bad points are mainly to do with the shonky infotainment system. VW has been criticised by its own customers for a 'driver interface' that is distracting when you're trying to adjust settings on the move. The company says it's taken the complaints on board but it's still a faff to perform basic tasks such as turning on air recirculation when you get stuck behind a lorry belching fumes. To make things worse, the touch controls on the display try to anticipate your command, so you go to jab the screen and it's changed before your finger has made contact. The international safety organisation NCAP is pressuring manufacturers to bring back buttons and switches to encourage drivers to keep their eyes on the road.

Another annoyance is the cheesily named 'mood' settings that turn up the ambient lighting and music volume. You can toggle through Lounge, Joy and Me. VW's target customers — parents with big families — are likely to wonder who exactly these were designed for. A mood called Stressed might be more appropriate. Then there's the Tayron name. A few times while I was testing the car people wandered over at petrol stations to ask what I was driving. After chatting a while, they'd try to recall the name and never could. 'It's the T'ai chi? Tie pin?'
So, the Tayron. A good car, solidly put together and a faithful load-lugger. If you're no fan of big SUVs you won't like it. If you're an exhausted parent you may find it just the job. Don't worry if you can't recall the name — no one else can.

As chief executive of dedicated electric car website and a long-time advocate of electric vehicles, you'd be forgiven for thinking I've been celebrating this week's news that Labour is bringing back grants for EVs. The government press release that landed in my inbox on Monday proudly trumpeted discounts of up to £3,750 on electric cars - saying it was set to slash costs for thousands of UK drivers with an impressive £650million fund. It boasted that the scheme would be up and running within days, with manufacturers handling the paperwork. Taking the news at face value, I initially welcomed such a bold move. But having delved into the detail, this is nothing short of an ill-conceived policy that raises more questions than answers. Instead of encouraging electric car uptake, it will instead restrict consumer choice. Labour really needs to go back to the drawing board on this one... Despite a new EV being registered every 60 seconds in June, private buyer sales have stalled. They now make up just under 20 per cent of registrations, with the bulk going to company car drivers who enjoy generous tax breaks if they go electric. In our November 2024 survey with the AA - responded to by over 11,000 UK drivers - 76 per cent told us that the upfront cost was the biggest barrier to switching. I believed fresh incentives would reignite momentum and give more drivers the confidence to switch. My calculations suggested almost half of all new electric models on sale would fall below the £37,000 price cap. Crucially, this support appeared to be aimed where it was needed most: from school-run staples to budget-friendly runarounds. How wrong I was. As they say, the devil is in the details - and as the week has unfolded, the details behind those upbeat headlines have painted a very different picture. Instead of a straightforward grant on all EVs under £37,000 - designed to help hard-working people make a sustainable choice - the rigid rules and baffling conditions surrounding which cars qualify (and by how much) have left even the carmakers scratching their heads. At the heart of this complexity is something called a Science Based Target (SBT), which requires manufacturers to commit to cutting greenhouse gas emissions in line with limiting global warming to 1.5C or below 2C, as set out in the Paris Agreement on climate change. You'd assume the government would have a simple list of eligible manufacturers. Apparently not. Instead, car makers - with customers in dealerships already asking about discounts - are left wading through bureaucracy to figure it all out. Even if a company has signed up to an SBT - like Renault or Ford - the scheme may still reject cars assembled in countries with poor overall sustainability records or high emissions. And, surprise surprise, even that isn't as simple as it sounds. The emissions calculations are split between where the battery is made and where the car itself is built. This means a car assembled in the UK or Europe may score well for manufacturing and earn the minimum £1,500 grant, but fail to reach the additional 70 per cent score needed for the full £3,750 if its battery is sourced from a country with a lower environmental score. Transport Minister Lilian Greenwood told BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Wednesday: 'We don't expect any cars that are assembled in China to be eligible for this scheme.' This rules out cars like the Volvo EX30, the Mini electric (which incidentally, is built in factories powered by renewable energy), the MG4 and the Dacia Spring - family favourites which it seems won't qualify for a penny. Making matters worse, many manufacturers striving to make EVs cheaper have switched to LFP batteries, which are predominantly made in China. So much for my celebrations that the grant was focused on more affordable models. The reality is that car making is a global business. Even if your car doesn't bear a Chinese badge, the chances are part of it was manufactured there. And it's not just Chinese-made cars at risk of ending up with nothing - brands from other nations like Korea which make some of the UK's most popular cars could also end up with many models being excluded. The government is effectively limiting consumer choice at the very moment they should be encouraging it. Far from being the shot in the arm that private buyers need, this ill-conceived grant scheme has only created questions and confusion. I'm now telling anyone in the market for a new EV to pause before making a decision - especially since, bizarrely, it appears that if the entry-level model of a car costs under £37,000, the more expensive versions and trims in the same range might still be eligible for discounts. This scheme encapsulates everything that's wrong with government policymaking: good intentions, badly thought through and buried under layers of bureaucracy. It simply seems half-baked, with an announcement which was made too early. If Labour truly wants to accelerate EV adoption, they need to go back to the drawing board and design something that actually works for the people it's supposed to help and gives everyone some clarity. My advice? Start with the used market.

That's not the only interesting stat. 'In terms of male:female split, it's still early days,' says Barker. 'I think it's probably about 90:10. We have a few more female customers out in the Asia-Pacific region.' Valhalla buyers all have more than one car and most of them come from the US or Europe. The UK accounts for about 10% of sales. When you're choosing your spec, the screen is cool, but if you want to see your colour in the real world, a huge bank of paint, leather, carbonfibre and fabric samples sits behind you. A Storm Purple top layer for the bodywork looks mighty fine on the screen – and even better in hand under natural light. Seeing the car almost life-size in front of you makes it clear how much of an impact colour can have on something like the Valhalla. Which leads to the question of 'elaborate' specs… 'We're still Aston Martin,' says Vittorio Gabba, head of personalisation at the company's ultra-bespoke Q by Aston Martin division, 'and we want the car to represent the brand.' Q has, according to Gabba, played a role in 80% of the Valhallas specced so far. Autocar's purple beast could have a tinted purple carbon pack on it, custom decals, an off-book paint job or almost anything you can think of, which Q will do its utmost to make happen.
