CBI books EPFO accounts officer, wife in corruption case
The accused official, who is posted in Pune, and his wife, were recently booked under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption (PC) Act under sections relevant to the offences of performing public duty improperly or dishonestly in anticipation or in consequence of accepting undue advantage and abetment, respectively, CBI sources said. The accused officer is under the probe's scanner for his service tenure in the period between 2019 and 2025. The probe will also examine if there were others who may have helped the accused, agency sources said.
The CBI began its investigation on the basis of information that the accused officer, being a public servant, was directly involved in the processing and handling PF claims submitted by multiple private firms over a period from 2019 to 2025, but was misusing his official position to dishonestly process the claims, the sources said. It was learnt by the CBI that several of these claimants had allegedly deposited funds in the bank account of a consultancy firm maintained with a public-sector bank.
The consultancy firm was in the name of the accused officer's wife, the sources said. Verification conducted by the agency showed that the consultancy firm was allegedly also operating from the residence of the accused officer, the sources said.
'The information prima facie revealed that the accused EPFO official, being a public servant, abused his official position to improperly and dishonestly process and handle various EPFO claims submitted by various private entities in anticipation of or in consequence of accepting undue advantage through a third party, the consultancy services ostensibly operated in the name of his wife,' a CBI source said. His wife allegedly abetted him in accepting undue advantage from PF claimants under the garb of providing consultancy services to them, the sources said.
The CBI obtained the approval from the Competent Authority under the PC Act to initiate its probe against the accused official.

J&K SIA raids two places in connection with non-local killing case
Srinagar: State Investigation Agency (SIA) of J&K Police on Thursday carried out searches at the premises of two suspects in Anantnag district in connection with the non-local killing case. A statement by SIA said that these searches were carried out as part of an ongoing investigation into the brutal killing of Raja Sah on April 17, 2024, in Bijbehara. The search operations are a crucial step toward identifying and apprehending the co-conspirators and supporters of the accused, ensuring a comprehensive probe into the murder and related unlawful activities, he said. 'The SIA J&K remain steadfast in their mission to protect the lives of citizens and counter any attempts to disrupt peace in J&K,' he said. SIA has successfully investigated and challaned some high-profile crimes investigated by the agency. Terrorists in 2002 killed advocate Babar Qadri in his home in the Hawal area of Srinagar city. Qadri was killed at his residence in Srinagar's Hawal area. While one of the terrorists waited outside the main gate to keep an eye on the happenings around, the remaining two, who were also carrying a dummy case file, were made to sit on the chairs placed in the verandah. Before his death, Qadri had accused the then-president of the High Court Bar Association, Mian Qayoom, of planning to kill him. SIA arrested Mian Qayoom and later charged him with Babar Qadri's murder in the court of law.

WB CM writes to Amit Shah over spike in fake social media content, cybercrime
Kolkata: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday wrote a letter to union home minister Amit Shah, raising her concern over the spike in provocative social media content and cybercrime. Mamata Banerjee had previously accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of spreading misinformation and fake videos, especially during the violence in Murshidabad (PTI) 'I write to convey my deep concern over an issue that is increasingly posing serious challenges to public tranquillity and the social fabric of our nation – the proliferation of provocative content on some sections of the social media platforms and the alarming rise in cybercrimes,' Banerjee wrote in the letter. Banerjee had previously accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of spreading misinformation and fake videos, especially during the violence in Murshidabad. 'Yesterday some news was spread that I have resigned. Police have registered an FIR. The jumla party only believes in divide-and-rule policy. Fake videos are being circulated every day. Earlier attempts were made to pass off videos of Gujarat riots as those from Murshidabad,' she had said on April 2. Police had suspended internet services in some parts of Murshidabad after violence broke out in West Bengal's Murshidabad district over the Waqf (Amendment) Act in April, to prevent the spread of misinformation. Videos of a mob attacking the block development office in Jalangi and ransacking the office of a railway gateman in Azimganj had surfaced on social media. Rioters were seen in video clips looting an outlet of a retail chain. Police had reportedly resorted to lathi-charge and tear gas after vehicles were torched, shops looted, and policemen attacked. 'Such content not only spreads misinformation but also has the potential to inflame communal sentiments, incite violence, disrupt societal harmony and indulge in crime against women,' Banerjee added. Banerjee also highlighted the surge in cybercrime and said it is 'growing both in complexity and in its detrimental impact.' NIA files supplementary chargesheet against Maoist ultra
Ranchi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday filed a supplementary chargesheet before the special court in Ranchi against a Maoist on charges of handling arms, extorting money, and harbouring rebels of the banned terror organisation. In a press statement, the NIA said, "Rajesh Deogam, a resident of West Singhbhum district, was charged under various sections of the IPC, the Arms Act, the Explosives Substances Act, and the UA(P) Act." "A case was registered by the local police against five persons in connection with the recovery of huge amount of money and various incriminating materials pertaining to key Maoist member Misir Besra in March 2024. The NIA, which took over the probe in July 2024, found that Deogam had been actively supporting the criminal conspiracy of the Maoists to commit terror acts, organise meetings, and extort money from contractors and traders," the NIA stated. Disclosures by Deogam had led to the seizure of gelatine sticks, Rs 10,50,000 in cash, walkie-talkie, tablet, power bank, radio set, extortion demand receipts, and other incriminating materials, the statement added.
