'Cost him the race': F1 driver facing the axe after incident with Oscar Piastri
Alpine driver Franco Colapinto is reportedly in danger of losing his spot on the F1 team, and a crazy incident involving Oscar Piastri in the Austrian Grand Prix won't do him any favours. Piastri finished second behind McLaren teammate Lando Norris, who cut the Aussie's lead in the championship to just 15 points. But it was nearly so much worse for Piastri, who came perilously close to not finishing the race when he was inadvertently forced off track by Colapinto on lap 55. Norris and Piastri were moving past the lapped Alpine driver, who moved out of the way for Norris but didn't appear to realise Piastri was also right there. Colapinto moved straight back into Piastri's path and forced the Aussie driver onto the grass, who managed to keep his composure and get back on track. Piastri narrowly avoided disaster, but the incident cost him precious ground on Norris and ruined his chances of overtaking his teammate late in the race. Piastri was then blocked by Colapinto's Alpine teammate Pierre Gasly on lap 57, and the Aussie driver was left fuming. He reportedly said on team radio: 'Alpine still manages to find a way to f*** me over all these years later." Piastri was referencing his controversial switch from Alpine to McLaren in 2022, when Alpine tried to block the move. F1 fans were left filthy with Colapinto's mistake, with many joking he's trying to take out as many Aussies as possible. The Argentine replaced Aussie driver Jack Doohan earlier this season, who was sacked after six races. But new reports have claimed Colapinto is also in the gun after failing to impress. 'Racing News 365' is reporting that Alpine are considering dumping Colapinto as well, with pressure intensifying after the incident with Piastri that could have caused massive embarrassment for the team had it affected the championship race even more. Alpine's plan was to give Colapinto five races to show what he's capable of, and those five races are now completed. The Argentine hasn't scored a single point, but neither did Doohan in his six races. Apline had seemingly backflipped on that plan and guaranteed Colapinto's immediate future, but their stance has reportedly now changed. According to 'Racing News 365': "Alpine has informed Colapinto and his management team that the Argentinian needed to start performing." Colapinto, who was hit with a five-second penalty during the race and one penalty point on his record afterwards, said: "I'm not really concerned. I think (team principal) Flavio Briatore has been very supportive and he has trust on the decision he's made. I, and the team as well, are focusing on improving the car. We looked a bit weak today, and we just need to take some steps forward. "The car has been a bit tricky for me to drive at the moment. It's not very consistent. It's quick, but it just didn't give me the confidence I needed to push in the high speed here. It was a tough weekend. Overall, we did some steps forward, but it felt like something didn't click." Colapinto cost Piastri the race. "It was a good battle. A bit on the edge at times and probably pushed the limits a bit far," he admitted afterwards. "But that's what we're here to do: try and race each other and try and fight for wins. And that's what we did today. It was close for me, but not quite enough." Team principal Andrea Stella praised Piastri's immediate accountability after the incident on Sunday, saying: "As soon as he crossed the finish line, he opened the radio and he said, 'Sorry for the situation in corner four. My bad. I know what I have to do'. We have come out stronger and even more united."

Box Office: ‘F1' Revs to $144 Million Globally, ‘Lilo & Stitch' Nears $950 Million Milestone
Brad Pitt's original racing drama 'F1' drove to the top of the box office charts, collecting a sizable $88.4 million internationally and $144 million globally in its opening weekend. The film, from director Joseph Kosinski and producers Jerry Bruckheimer and Formula One champ Lewis Hamilton, follows a retired driver (Pitt) who returns to the popular motorsport to coach a cocksure rookie (Damson Idris) and save a failing team. Outside of the U.S. and Canada, where 'F1' zoomed to $55.6 million, the top-earning territories were the United Kingdom with $9.2 million, China with $9 million and Mexico with $6.7 million. Imax screens accounted for $11.1 million overseas and $27.7 million globally, representing 19% of overall revenues — the fourth-highest percentage in Imax's history. ''F1' has inspired audiences around the globe with its underdog story and perfect blend of high-octane racing and human-centered storytelling,' says Apple's head of worldwide video Zack Van Amburg. 'The film's outstanding debut reflects both the excitement of Formula 1 and the deeply emotional and entertaining story crafted by the entire cast and creative team. Their dedication and innovation have fueled an unforgettable cinematic experience.' In terms of other newcomers, Universal and Blumhouse's A.I. thriller 'M3GAN 2.0' flatlined with $7 million from 80 international markets. Mexico earned a leading $1.2 million, followed by the U.K. and Ireland with $700,000 and Brazil with $400,000. Along with $10.2 million domestically, 'M3GAN 2.0' has grossed a soft $17 million in its first weekend of release. With weak reviews and seemingly diminished audience interest, the campy horror sequel failed to achieve the box office heights of 2023's 'M3GAN,' which ignited to $15 million overseas and $45 million globally. The original became a sleeper hit with $180 million worldwide, which explains the studio's justification for the follow-up film set around the scream queen who became a meme queen. Fortunately for the studio, 'M3GAN 2.0' cost a modest $25 million, so potential theatrical losses won't be too painful. Plus, Universal is flying high with 'How to Train Your Dragon,' which added $32 million internationally in its third frame. The live-action remake has earned $254 million overseas and $454 million worldwide to date, underscoring the enduring appeal of the fantastical property. Universal has the live-action sequel set for 2027. PG films have been dominating at the box office with 'Lilo & Stitch' adding $13.1 million from 52 markets for a massive overseas tally of $545 million. After six weekends on the big screen, the live-action 'Lilo & Stitch' is about to cross the $950 million milestone (with $946 million globally so far) and has $1 billion on the horizon. A live-action sequel to 'Lilo & Stitch' is also in the works. Not every movie with a family friendly rating is electrifying the box office. Disney's original Pixar adventure 'Elio' brought in just $11.4 million from 48 territories in its sophomore outing. After notching the worst start in Pixar history, 'Elio' has grossed $30 million overseas and $73 million worldwide. Though positive word-of-mouth should help the film endure throughout the summer, 'Elio' is nowhere near on track to earn enough to justify its $150 million production budget.

'F1' tops North American box office with $55.6M

Photo by John Angelillo/UPI | License Photo June 29 (UPI) -- Brad Pitt's racing movie, F1, is No. 1 in North America, earning $55.6 million in receipts this weekend, announced Sunday. Coming in at No. 2 is How to Train Your Dragon with $19.4 million, followed by Elio at No. 3 with $10.7 million, M3GAN 2.0 at No. 4 with $10.2 million and 28 Days Later at No. 5 with $9.7 million. Rounding out the top tier are Lilo & Stitch at No. 6 with $6.9 million, Mission: Impossible -- The Final Reckoning at No. 7 with $4.2 million, Materialists at No. 8 with $3 million, Ballerina at No. 9 with $2.1 million and Karate Kid: Legends at No. 10 with $1 million.
