Speeding In A Tesla, 20-Year-China Man Kills Family Of 3, Shows No Remorse
A 20-year-old Chinese man caused a deadly accident last October 2, killing a family of three after driving recklessly following an argument with his girlfriend, South China Morning Post reported. Speeding at 129km/h in a Tesla on a in a 40km/h zone, he ignored his girlfriend's pleas to slow down, hitting a 31-year-old father, his 30-year-old wife, and their infant son, nearly one year old. Showing no remorse and joking about the deaths, Liao's actions sparked widespread online outrage.
The family was crossing the road to attend a family dinner when the accident occurred. The mother and infant died instantly, and the father died en route to the hospital. Elephant News reported that the victims' parents are now battling severe depression due to the tragedy.
"We were waiting for them to come home for dinner, but all we got was a call from the traffic police telling us they were gone. It feels like the world has collapsed around us," said Hu, who lost her son and grandson in the tragedy.
Following the accident, Liao and his family refused to apologise. Liao's father even threatened the victims' family, stating, 'My son killing your son was an act of God; you suing my son is a man-made disaster!' Hu reported that Liao displayed no compassion at the scene of the tragedy.
She said, "The scene was blood-soaked, yet he was chatting, joking, and laughing about my baby. Does he have any humanity?"
The victims' family rejected an offer of 800,000 yuan (approximately $110,000) in compensation from Liao's family. They also declined a proposal that Liao would care for the victims' elderly parents after his release from prison.
"What use is the money when two generations of my family are gone? How could he even suggest such a thing? Why would we allow the murderer who destroyed our family to take care of us?: Hu asked.
During the trial, Hu demanded the harshest punishment for Liao, even calling for the death penalty. Hu stated, "This man is only 20 years old, but he is already so cruel! One life for three lives, that is the only justice."
Liao's lack of remorse and his family's refusal to apologise have sparked widespread public outrage. One user wrote, "This is just too heartbreaking to watch. I hope this grieving mother can stay strong and see justice served, so that the 'monster' gets what he deserves."
Another said, "This was intentional murder. He must pay with his life."

Start the week with a film: Texture and layers in murder mystery ‘Only the River Flows'
Some murder mysteries lose their allure when the killer's identity is revealed. Only the River Flows is not that kind of movie. Chinese director Wei Shujun's film has the atmospherics, open-endedness and enigma that are often missing from the usual blunt-edged procedural. Only the River Flows (2023), adapted from acclaimed Chinese writer Yun Hua's novel Mistakes by the River, is a cerebral crime drama that alludes to the changes sweeping across rural China in the 1990s. Only the River Flows is set in 1995 in a village, where a flowing river proves to be the only element that is predictable. An old woman is clubbed to death by the riverside. The police chief instructs detective Ma Zhe (Zhu Yilong) to solve the case quickly. An abandoned cinema hall is repurposed as the investigation unit. The strict, taciturn and chain-smoking Ma Zhe quickly arrives at the modus operandi, but he's flummoxed when there are more murders. Is a serial killer at work? Ma Zhe isn't satisfied with the person designated as the perpetrator. His probe carries on even after he has submitted his official report, amidst his wife's difficult pregnancy and pressure from his superiors. The Mandarin-language film is available on Prime Video. The murder investigation in Only the River Flows expands into a subtly allegorical portrait of a fast-changing but also timeless China. Hierarchy, the emphasis on conformity and individual achievement all play a part in Ma Zhe's probe. An audio tape that lovers use to communicate, the sighting of a long-haired woman, the elderly victim's adoption of a mentally challenged man – these are clues not just into the killings but also the prevalent value system in an authoritarian, rule-bound country. Cinematographer Zhiyuan Chengma brilliantly captures the period detail, with the use of 16mm film stock adding texture and layers to the plot. Chengma's contribution is felt not just in the noirish scenes but also in the moments between Ma Zhe and his wife. Zhu Yilong makes a fine policeman, as mysterious as his target. The ending of Only the River Flows raises questions rather than supplying pat answers. It's that kind of movie. Play

India hits back at Pakistan over terror accusation
Islamabad has accused New Delhi of being behind an attack in North Waziristan that killed 13 troops and three civilians India has rejected Pakistan's accusation that it was behind a deadly terrorist attack in North Waziristan District earlier that day, calling the claim "false and malicious," according to a statement from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs. This comes after Islamabad accused New Delhi of sponsoring terrorism following an attack on Saturday morning in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province which borders Afghanistan. In the attack, a suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into a military convoy, followed by indiscriminate firing. The Pakistan Army said 13 soldiers were killed and three civilians injured, including two children. AFP news agency initially reported, citing the authorities, that 29 civilians were injured in the attack. Hours after the incident, the Pakistan Army's Inter-Services Public Relations wing issued a statement accusing India of backing the terrorists: "In a cowardly attack, planned and orchestrated by the terrorist state of India and executed by its proxy Fitna al Khwarij, a Security Forces convoy was targeted today in the general area of Mir Ali, North Waziristan District." It went on to say: "The security forces of Pakistan, in step with the nation, remain steadfast in their resolve to eradicate Indian-sponsored terrorism from the country, and such sacrifices of our brave soldiers and innocent civilians further reinforce our unwavering commitment to safeguarding our nation at all costs." In another statement, the Pakistan Army said Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir visited Corps Headquarters in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where he was briefed on the security situation and ongoing counterterrorism operations. Media reports earlier indicated that the Pakistani-based Taliban faction, the Hafiz Gul Bahadur group, claimed responsibility for the bombing. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has long been a point of contention between Pakistan and Afghanistan, with Islamabad often blaming the Taliban for providing safe haven to outlawed militant groups that stage attacks on security personnel and civilians. In March 2024, five Chinese workers and their local driver were killed in a suicide bomb attack in the province. Pakistan identified the attacker as an Afghan national and claimed the attack was planned in Afghanistan. READ MORE: From bunker bombs to Nobel dreams: Trump's war for peace Islamabad previously accused New Delhi of supporting militants and separatist movements in the province of Balochistan, where terrorist attacks are also frequent. India has rejected these claims, accusing Pakistan of funding cross-border terrorism, including the April 22 attack on civilians in Kashmir that led to a military and diplomatic standoff between the neighboring states in May.
