
Beloved Bay Area market to open Korean bakery
The bakery is set to arrive this summer at 2368 Junipero Serra Blvd., across from the grocery store, with a range of Korean and French baked goods. Owner Haesoo Park, who opened the original Kukje in San Francisco in 1990, has long wanted to start a bakery, said his niece, Annie Kim. Kukje didn't have sufficient kitchen space to bake items in-house, so instead sold pastries from a San Jose bakery. When the owner of Jade Dragon Restaurant just across the street from Kukje wanted to retire and approached him about taking over the space, he jumped at the opportunity.
'He's been obsessed with the idea for a long time,' Kim said.
Kukje Bakery will bake classic Korean pastries as well as 'French fusion' items and 'special' croissants, she said. It will be similar to the Korean chain Paris Baguette, but with more seasonal creations. The bakery will have a full espresso bar and a seating area for people to dine on site. An Instagram video shows a large, open space with warm wood accents.
Kukje has been a Bay Area mainstay for decades, known for its array of banchan, homey hot dishes and produce. In a review this week, Chronicle restaurant critic MacKenzie Chung Fegan lauded Kukje's soups and unpretentious vibe, especially as compared to much-hyped Korean markets like the nearby Jagalchi. 'I'll choose Kukje nine times out of 10 if I'm looking for a meal,' she wrote.

South Korean superstar Son Heung-min is signing with LAFC for MLS record transfer fee
LAFC's signing of South Korean national team captain Son Heung-min appears to be one of those rare acquisitions that checks every box and helps everybody. Not only is it one of the most significant signings in MLS history, but it instantly makes LAFC better while boosting the World Cup hopes of the Korean national team and the profile of Korean soccer in the U.S. But in few places will the impact of the signing, which is expected to be completed Tuesday, be felt more directly than in Southern California's Korean community, the largest in the U.S. 'The Korean community has been buzzing ever since rumors of Son Heung-min's potential move to LAFC began to spread,' said Kyeongjun Kim, a writer with The Korean Daily, the largest Korean-language media outlet in the U.S. 'The fact that a player of his caliber is coming to L.A. is monumental event. 'Son's move to the LAFC is as exciting — if not moreso — than when Chan-ho Park and Hyun-jin Ryu joined the Dodgers.' Luring Son, 33, away from Tottenham of the English Premier League, where he spent the last 10 seasons, came at a high price though. Although financial details of the signing were not announced, a league official with knowledge of the negotiations said the transfer fee easily topped the MLS-record $22 million Atlanta United paid to Middlesbrough in February for the rights to striker Emmanuel Latte Lath. ESPN, citing unnamed sources, put the price at $26 million, more than LAFC's total payroll of nearly $22.4 million, which is sixth-highest in the league. Yet, strangely, that could still prove to be something of a bargain and represents another signing coup for general manager John Thorrington who, over the past four seasons, has signed Hugo Lloris and Olivier Giroud, the most-capped and highest scorer for the French national team, respectively; Giorgio Chiellini and Gareth Bale, captains of the Italian and Welsh national teams, respectively; and Denis Bouanga, who led the MLS in goals in the last two full seasons. Thorrington didn't have to break the bank to do any of it. LAFC earned $10 million from it's participation in this summer's Club World Cup, money it then invested in Son. And despite the massive transfer fee, the team could actually profit financially from the deal since it has long believed a Korean star playing in Los Angeles would more than pay for itself in marketing and sponsorship deals, much the same way the Dodgers have profited off Japan's Shohei Ohtani. Kim said that's a very good bet. 'The passion and influence of Korean and Korean-American soccer fans should never be underestimated,' he said, noting that major European clubs with Korean players have begun posting online content in Korean. 'Korean broadcasters,' he predicted 'may seek to acquire broadcasting rights and new business opportunities could emerge. Son's arrival at LAFC will benefit not only the club but also the league as a whole.' The impact won't be limited to the Korean community, however. Son, who was one of the most popular players in the Premier League, speaks English well and has a positive and humble personality, which will make him easy to market across ethnic boundaries. Coast Guard report: OceanGate Titan implosion was 'preventable'

Gunther/EPA Aug. 5 (UPI) -- The implosion of the OceanGate submersible Titan in 2023 was "preventable," because of its inadequate design and "toxic" workplace culture, according to a report released by the U.S. Coast Guard Tuesday. The Titan imploded on June 18, 2023, killing five people. The 335-page report documented the causes of the implosion and listed 17 safety recommendations to strengthen oversight of submersible operations, improve coordination among federal agencies and close gaps in international maritime policy. All five on the submersible were killed in the implosion. They were OceanGate's founder and CEO, Stockton Rush; British billionaire Hamish Harding; French maritime expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet; Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his 19-year-old son, Suleman Dawood. "The two-year investigation has identified multiple contributing factors that led to this tragedy, providing valuable lessons learned to prevent a future occurrence," said Jason Neubauer, chair of the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Board of Investigation for the Titan. "There is a need for stronger oversight and clear options for operators who are exploring new concepts outside of the existing regulatory framework. I am optimistic the [Report of Investigation's] findings and recommendations will help improve awareness of the risks and the importance of proper oversight while still providing a pathway for innovation." Titan's imploded wreckage was found on the ocean floor about 1,640 feet off the bow of the Titanic. The Coast Guard conducted hearings last year to hear testimony from OceanGate employees and others involved in the dive. OceanGate operations director David Lochridge testified about the business climate at the company and about what he said was Rush's penchant for playing fast and loose with the rules. Lochridge told the panel that the company's goal was to turn a profit, that OceanGate ignored obvious safety issues, and that "very little" science was involved in carrying out the sub's dives. OceanGate's former engineering director, Tony Nissen, testified that he was fired because he refused to approve a planned expedition after the submersible was struck by lightning, which compromised its experimental carbon fiber hull. "Stockton [Rush] would fight for what he wanted and, even if it changed from day to day, he wouldn't give an inch. Most people would eventually back down to Stockton. It was death by a thousand cuts," he testified. The 21-foot Titan submersible lost contact with the crew of the Polar Prince about 1 hour and 45 minutes into its dive on June 18, 2023. Responders scoured the North Atlantic Ocean, near the wreckage of the Titanic passenger liner that sank in 1912, to find the missing vessel before its oxygen ran out. The Coast Guard said in September 2024 that the Titan crew sent a message during the fateful dive that "all is well" just before the deadly implosion. It was the final communication from the Titan before the implosion. Neubauer's listed extensive causes of the disaster and recommendations for future vessels. "The board determined the primary contributing factors were OceanGate's inadequate design, certification, maintenance and inspection process for the Titan," Neubauer said in the press release announcing the report. "Other factors cited in the report include a toxic workplace culture at OceanGate, an inadequate domestic and international regulatory framework for submersible operations and vessels of novel design, and an ineffective whistleblower process under the Seaman's Protection Act. "The board also found OceanGate failed to properly investigate and address known hull anomalies following its 2022 Titanic expedition. Investigators determined the Titan's real-time monitoring system generated data that should have been analyzed and acted on during the 2022 Titanic expedition. However, OceanGate did not take any action related to the data, conduct any preventative maintenance or properly store the Titan during the extended off season before its 2023 Titanic expedition." He went on to list recommendations for further dives, including restrictions on oceanographic research vessels, expanding requirements to all submersibles and requiring Coast Guard documentation for all U.S. submersibles. Neubauer also recommended "adding Coast Guard personnel capacity at Coast Guard Headquarters to support new construction oversight and field inspections involving submersibles and vessels of novel design." Other recommendations include submitting Coast Guard search and rescue plans, safety requirements, whistleblower agreements and investigative protocols. In August 2024, Paul Henry Nargeolet's family filed suit demanding OceanGate to pay $50 million for the explorer's wrongful death. The family's lawsuit filed in a court in Seattle accuses OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush and others of gross negligence and wrongful death.

Resident Culture Brewing has closed its South End taproom, the Charlotte-based business announced Monday on Instagram. "This account — and this location — are now closed to the public — but our appreciation is forever and the magic you brought to it remains," the post read. Why it matters: One of Charlotte's most beloved breweries, the South End location was once a major nightlife draw in one of Charlotte's fastest-growing neighborhoods, but closures like this signal challenges in the cooling craft beer market. What they're saying:"The decision was not made lightly, and it comes with deep appreciation for everyone who made South End possible — from our dedicated team to every guest who walked through our doors," co-owners Phillip and Amanda McLamb shared in a statement to Axios. "We are immensely appreciative of the amazing Resident Culture team members who have joined us for nearly four years of collective effort and great learnings," the statement continues. Flashback: The McLambs opened Resident Culture South End in 2022 on West Bland Street. The original Plaza Midwood taproom opened in 2017 and expanded to The Market at 7th Street in Uptown in the summer of 2023. Between the lines: The South End taproom positioned itself as more than a brewery. It had its own coffee bar (Killer Coffee — also now closed), craft cocktails, rotating food concepts (from breakfast tacos to barbecue), and, especially early on, a weekend scene that often felt more like a club, with moody lights, live DJs and a young party crowd.
