Nrupatunga Betta pipeline vandalised again: Walkers launch video campaign

Time of India08-07-2025
Hubballi: In a recurring act of vandalism, miscreants damaged the water pipeline at Nrupatunga Betta for the sixth time in a month. The pipeline, maintained by nearly 200 morning walkers united under Nrupatunga Walkers, at their own expense, was laid to support sapling watering and greening efforts.
Disappointed by this repeated sabotage, the walkers have now turned to social media, launching a video campaign urging the forest and police departments to intervene and protect their initiative.
Channu Hosamani and Dr Srikant Mayannavar, convenors of Nrupatunga Walkers, told TOI that an average of 15 members of the association work in the hills voluntarily every day. "We spent about Rs 1.5 lakh on the pipeline work.
However, miscreants have been vandalising pipes repeatedly. They should understand that the hills are like an oxygen tower, and miscreants are also beneficiaries of this place gifted by nature.
Irked by this act, many of our association wanted to picket the forest department and police station seeking action against the culprits. We have convinced them to reach miscreants through our video appeal. We are also urging the forest and police departments to prevent such acts," they explained.
They said they planted 26 saplings in association with the Rotary Club on Sunday, and the pipelines were found vandalised on Monday morning.
Gopalappa, Vijay Guddad, and Shridhar Jawalkar, other walkers, said that miscreants are also axing some trees grown to about 10-12 feet. "We normally plant 8-feet saplings. Once they grow, they are being axed at the stem so that they go dry gradually," they alleged.
Hosamani demanded the arrest of the culprits and that forest officials should recover the loss incurred by this act.
RS Uppar, range forest officer, Hubballi, said they have initiated action in this regard. "We have deployed a guard there and have kept vigil on some suspicious persons. When we enquired some suspicious persons, they denied being involved in the act. If we nab the culprits, we will take action as per the Forest Act," he stated.

Gujarat HC grants bail to Bliss Consultants owner in investment cheating case

The Gujarat High Court on Tuesday granted bail to the owner of stockbroking firm Bliss Consultants, Ashesh Shailesh Mehta, in an alleged case of cheating in Dhanera police station of Banaskantha in connection with a multi-crore investment case. The FIR in the said case was lodged in August 2023 although Mehta, as of now, is lodged in Mumbai's Arthur Road Jail in the case of the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Maharashtra Police. His counsel informed the court that his assets worth Rs 171 crore have been attached by special Maharashtra Protection of Interest of Depositors (MPID) court. Considering the submissions of Mehta's counsel — Advocate Deshal Modi — Justice MR Mengdey of the Gujarat High Court granted bail to Mehta on Tuesday. The oral order of the court said, 'From the record it appears that the investigation is over and chargesheet has been filed. The present applicant has been arrested in connection with the present offence on March 13, 2024 and since then he is in custody… On the basis of those promises, the (complainant) had invested the amount of Rs 1,03,00,000/- in the said scheme. Similarly, the other victims had also invested their money. The total amount involved in the present offence is around Rs 171 crore. The record indicates that all the assets of the present applicant have been seized, which comes to around Rs 171 crore. Considering the same, the application deserves consideration.' Advocate Modi told The Indian Express, 'Mehta and his wife Shivangi were victims of cheating committed by a shell company, which is an accounting firm, that they were associated with… In June 2023, while they were called by the Madhya Pradesh police for a statement in an NDPS (Narcotics Drugs & Psychotropic Substances) case against a third party, who they do not know, there was a false arbitration that came about in Khed (a town in Maharashtra's Ratnagiri), involving the shell company, in which Rs 160 crore of their money was freezed in a private bank account. As the panic spread about the NDPS case, investors sought their money back and the couple returned Rs 60 crore back to investors but before they could return the rest of the sum of Rs 110 crore, their bank account had been freezed.' Modi added that a series of FIRs followed against the couple in Maharashtra as well as three FIRs in Gujarat — in Ranip and Chandkheda in Ahmedabad and in Dhanera in Banaskantha. Modi said, 'The applicant (Mehta) has been granted bail in the Ranip and Chandkheda cases even though Dhanera was the first FIR in Gujarat. Now, he has been granted bail in all three cases but will remain lodged at Arthur Road jail due to the EOW case… We informed the court that the MPID court has attached assets worth Rs 171 crore and the Deputy Collector of Kurla (in Mumbai) has been appointed to oversee the process by which they can return the money to their investors.' The Dhanera case was lodged by an investor of Bliss Consultants against a sum of Rs 1.3 crore, alleging it belonged to him and his relatives. As the prosecution's case, Bliss Consultants had promised a 70% profit return on investments with about 4% interest to be earned per month. The investors used a mobile application called DIFM (Do It For Me). Mehta's wife Shivangi has been granted bail in the case earlier.

Truck stolen 4 days before policy lapses, forum asks co to pay 75% of insured value

Ghaziabad: The consumer forum granted partial relief to a transporter whose mini truck was stolen just four days before his vehicle insurance was due to expire. In a ruling issued on July 31, the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (DCDRC) directed New India Assurance Company to pay 75% of the insured declared value (IDV) and Rs 5,000 in litigation costs and as compensation for the mental agony caused during the prolonged dispute. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now IDV in vehicle insurance is the maximum amount an insurance company must pay out in case of total loss or theft of an insured vehicle and is typically calculated as the vehicle's market value. The petitioner, Lalman Singh, said his Tata 407 pickup truck was insured under a policy valid from July 1, 2013, to June 30, 2014. On June 26, 2014, just four days before the policy lapsed, the truck was stolen from near his residence in Indirapuram. Singh said that he lodged a police complaint the same day, and an FIR was registered on June 30. Despite submitting a report declaring the vehicle "untraceable", Singh's claim for the full insurance amount of Rs 7.3 lakh was rejected. I nstead, the insurance company released only Rs 5.3 lakh and promised to release the remaining amount later. When the pending amount wasn't paid, Singh approached the consumer forum. New India Assurance argued that the settlement had been completed in line with the policy terms, following an assessment by a certified surveyor. The company's counsel told the commission that Singh had signed a full and final agreement and therefore was not entitled to any further claim. The commission cited a Supreme Court ruling in the 2008 case of National Insurance Company vs Nitin Khandelwal and noted that in cases involving theft, insurance companies were required to pay 75% of the IDV on a non-standard basis, even when procedural lapses exist. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In Singh's case, this amounted to Rs 5.46 lakh, which was Rs 15,949 short of what was already paid. The commission, led by president Praveen Kumar Jain and members Shailja Sachan and RP Singh, ruled that Singh was entitled to the shortfall in payment. It also took note of the delay and distress caused to the consumer, and ordered the insurance company to pay another Rs 5,000 in compensation. The insurance firm has been given 45 days from the date of the order to comply, failing which interest at 6% per annum would be levied on the unpaid amount.
