Opponent in tears as Aussie Maya Joint wins WTA Tour title in extraordinary fashion
Australian teenager Maya Joint saved four match points to clinch the WTA title at Eastbourne with a dramatic victory over Alexandra Eala that ended the Filipina's history bid on Saturday.
Joint survived a tense clash lasting two hours and 26 minutes, emerging with a 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (12/10) win to seal her second WTA Tour title.
In the youngest Eastbourne final since 1981, world number 51 Joint staved off the four championship points in a gripping final-set tie-break.
She finally wrapped up the title by drilling a backhand winner before collapsing to the turf in delight.
'I'm very happy right now, feeling very relieved as well. It was a very difficult match, I'm proud of myself for coming back and staying in the match,' Joint said.
'I'm glad I was able to find a way back. Alex played really well today. She definitely tested me and after the first set she got very aggressive.
'What an amazing crowd, you guys came and supported me every day so thank you.'
Having also defeated former Wimbledon runner-up Ons Jabeur and 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu at Eastbourne over the last week, Joint has underlined her status as one of the rising stars of the women's tour.
After winning on clay in Rabat in May, the 19-year-old has proved she can thrive on grass as well ahead of the start of Wimbledon on Monday.
Joint was unable to make it two trophies in one day as she and partner Hsieh Su-wei were beaten 6-4, 7-5 by Marie Bouzkova and Anna Danilina in the doubles final.
It was a painful defeat for Eala, who was so close to becoming the first player from the Philippines to win a WTA Tour title.
The 20-year-old wiped away tears of frustration during the on-court trophy presentation.
Eala had become the first Filipina to reach a WTA final after beating Varvara Gracheva in the last four at Eastbourne on Friday.
'I want to congratulate Maya for a great match and great tournament,' Eala said. 'This is my first WTA final, it's a big deal for me and for my country too because it's historic. I guess that's also why I'm so emotional.
'Wimbledon is next week so hopefully I'll forget about this match soon.'
Eala's run to the final has made the world number 74 one to watch in the coming months.
After progressing through qualifying to make the main draw, Eala beat Lucia Bronzetti, former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, Nottingham Open finalist Dayana Yastremska and France's Gracheva.
She had burst onto the scene with three shock victories over Grand Slam winners Ostapenko, Madison Keys and Iga Swiatek to reach the Miami Open semi-finals in March.
Eala is due to face reigning champion Barbora Krejcikova in the Wimbledon first round on Centre Court on Tuesday.

Careless contact with an AFL umpire could have huge ramifications for some of the game's best
An increase in AFL players making contact with umpires has forced the league to act and repeat offenders will now be sent directly to the tribunal with suspensions among potential penalties. AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon on Tuesday informed clubs that further sanctions would come into force after not seeing the required 'change in behaviour' across the year after a memo was sent to all clubs earlier this season. There have already been 63 charges so far this season, which is a spike from 56 in 2024 and just 20 in 2023. Gold Coast star Matt Rowell is among those repeatedly fined, having copped three sanctions this season alone, putting him on a knife-edge heading towards the Suns possible maiden finals appearance. Under the move which will come in to force from this weekend's games, when a player is found guilty for the fourth or subsequent offence for careless contact with an umpire across a two-year period, they will now likely face the tribunal. A fine as hefty as $5,000 will be issued to the club after a player reaches two offences. Dillon said the behaviour had grown worse since the AFL sent a memo to clubs earlier this year. 'We are seeing far too many instances of avoidable umpire contact, and since writing to clubs on this issue in February and again in April we have not seen a change in behaviour, and in fact seen an increase in umpire contact,' said Mr Dillon. 'We have an obligation to provide the best working environment for everyone, including the umpires, and there have been too many instances of avoidable umpire contact.' AFL umpires have gone out to a selection of clubs in recent weeks to try and educate players on how they can avoid colliding with the officiators. The tightened sanction could be as significant as ruling a player out of the Brownlow Medal, as the centre bounce is the most common place for collision between players and umpires.

Star in the making defects from Roosters in latest blow to NRL powerhouse
Isaac Moses you've done it again. It yet another brutal blow for Roosters boss Nick Politis, Moses has seen his client and young gun Mikey Nassar jump ship from the Sydney team. It's out with the East and in with the West to the Canterbury Bulldogs, who have nabbed the rising star in another big win for the future of the club who beat out multiple rivals for his signature. Nassar was only recently part of the Chooks SG Ball premiership side who took home the under-19s trophy earlier in the year. But Nassar, who can play anywhere in the backline but is a prolific fullback, was unlikely to ever have a long-term future at the Roosters given his connection to twice deregistered player agent Isaac Moses. Roosters boss Politis reportedly refuses to deal with Moses and any players that he represents, opening the inevitable door for Nassar. The most controversial moment came as Moses helped star Roosters centre Joseph-Akuso Sua'aili'I defect from the club to rugby union, after which Politis's gripes strengthened. Reports reveal that Nassar has been playing for Canterbury on the wing in the Ron Massey Cup for the past month, the third tier competition below the NRL. Just earlier in the year the young Rooster scored a double against the Bulldogs in Round eight of the SG Ball competition, but now joins the pack as a possible long term option in the outside backline for coach Cameron Ciraldo. Prior to his stint with the Roosters, Nassar played in the Harold Matthews under 7 competition for the Wests tigers, another club fraught with controversy around Moses. Most recently, Moses' client Lachlan Galvin was granted a release from his contract 18 months early to join the Bulldogs in controversial fashion. Nassar joins Aaymon Fitzgibbon and Finau Latu who have also made the switch to Belmore from St George.

The impending return of defensive bull Brayden Maynard for Collingwood's Friday night showdown with Carlton was offset by a 'sad' concussion injury for Jordan De Goey, further setting back his return from injury. As he stepped up his rehab of an achilles injury, De Goey copped an accidental head knock early in a Tuesday morning training session, forcing him off the track, and he was subsequently put in to concussion protocols.
