UFC champ Islam Makhachev's coach says Paddy Pimblett 'deserves' next title shot
Javier Mendez would have no issues if Paddy Pimblett was awarded a UFC title shot.
Pimblett (23-3 MMA, 7-0 UFC) remained unbeaten in the octagon when he finished-former title challenger Michael Chandler by TKO in this past Saturday's UFC 314 co-headliner in Miami.
"The Baddy" called out top contenders Charles Oliveira, Justin Gaethje, and Dustin Poirier, but UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev's (27-1 MMA, 16-1 UFC) head coach thinks Pimblett has earned a title shot already.
"Paddy is ready to face anybody," Mendez said on his "Javier & Mo Show" podcast. "I mean, what he's done already, his credentials, his winning record in the UFC, his hype, and what he can do, how he can motivate people. If they give him the next title shot, he deserves it."
Mendez admits he wasn't initially sold on Pimblett, but he was eventually able to win him over. He also likes what Pimblett brings to the table from a promotional aspect.
'Let's see who they give him to. I don't know, but is he worthy? Yes," Mendez said. "He's very interesting. He's got all of England behind him and a lot of America behind him. Most of America will be behind him. He has a lot of fans, and I'm a fan. I wasn't a big fan in the beginning when he fought Jared Gordon, but I've become a huge fan."
The American Kickboxing head coach thought Jared Gordon beat Pimblett when they fought at UFC 282 but has seen vast strides in Pimblett's game ever since.
"He's improved every single time," Mendez said of Pimblett. "Every time he comes out, his confidence is stronger and stronger all the time. His speaking is pretty impressive. I like him. He's fun to watch. I can't understand half the words he says, but I do pick up on him. ...He's funny."

Phenom Lottie Woad wins on the LPGA in pro debut at Scottish Open

Majestic. Sublime. Extraordinary. Flawless. The television announcers were running out of adjectives for the phenom Lottie Woad. KPMG Performance Insights gave Woad a 40 percent chance of winning heading into the final round of the ISPS Handa Women's Scottish Open. Heady stuff for a 21-year-old making her professional debut. Woad's magical July run continued at Dundonald Links, where the newly-minted pro became only the fourth player in LPGA history to win in her first start as an LPGA member, joining former world No. 1 Jin Young Ko (2018) and Beverly Hanson (1951). A Sunday 4-under 68 put Woad at 21 under for the tournament, capping off a maiden LPGA victory in her native U.K., with a three-stroke win over Hyo Joo Kim. Woad becomes the 20th different LPGA winner in a season in which no player has won twice. She heads next to the AIG Women's British Open in Wales, where she finished tied for 10th last year at St. Andrews. Woad began the final round of the Scottish with a two-shot lead in Ayrshire and, midway through, found herself knotted with major champion Hyo Joo Kim at 19 under. World No. 1 Nelly Korda, still looking for her first win of the season, made an early run with four birdies in the first six holes. A string of short misses, however, stalled the American and dropped her out of the mix. Known for her elite wedge play, Woad knocked one close on the 13th to make birdie and regain the solo lead. Another birdie on the 14th as Kim dropped a shot on the 15th stretched the steady Englishwoman's lead back to two with four to play. Woad becomes the first player since Rose Zhang to win on the LPGA in her first start as a pro. Zhang held a two-shot lead going into the final round of the 2023 Mizuho Americas Open and won in a playoff against Jennifer Kupcho to earn her LPGA card. Woad, of course, recently became the first player to graduate from the tour's new LEAP program, earning her card for the rest of 2025 and 2026. Immediately after winning the Irish Open on the LET, she missed out on a playoff at the Amundi Evian Championship by one shot. Woad turned pro last week, forgoing her final season at Florida State. She also accepted membership on the LET, which makes her eligible for the 2026 Solheim Cup. In her last three professional starts, Woad is 55 under par with a 67.4 scoring average. She notched only three bogeys for the week in Scotland.

Islam Makhachev reacts to Ilia Topuria taking No. 1 pound-for-pound spot in UFC rankings

A post shared by UFC Eurasia (@ufceurasia) Islam Makhachev is unbothered by Ilia Topuria overtaking him in the official UFC rankings. For many years, Makhachev (27-1 MMA, 16-1 UFC) made it clear he was striving to be the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world. He spent a solid chunk of time holding down the position during his dominant and record-setting reign as lightweight champion, but now that he's moved on from the division and is currently without a belt, that opened the door for someone else. Topuria (17-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) walked through that door at UFC 317 in June, when the former featherweight champion moved up in weight and knocked out Charles Oliveira to claim the vacant 155-pound belt left behind by Makhachev as he jumps divisions in his own career and readies to challenge welterweight champ Jack Della Maddalena later this year. With Topuria being a hot item in the sport and becoming the first to claim belts in two divisions while undefeated, he is now ranked No. 1 pound-for-pound on the UFC's official rankings. This doesn't frustrate Makhachev, he said, because he thinks it's all designed to build toward an eventual fight between "El Matador" and himself. "Well, it's marketing," Makhachev told UFC Eurasia during Saturday's UFC on ABC 9 event in Abu Dhabi (H/T: Championship Rounds on X). "They did it on purpose for hype, to hype up the fight. People already have interest in this fight. They're doing the right thing. We will fight for first place.' Islam Makhachev reacts to Ilia Topuria taking his spot as the #1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world"Well, it's marketing. They're doing it on purpose to promote this fight... So they do it right, and we'll be fighting for the #1 spot in the rankings." 👀🎥 @ufc Whether all of this is building toward a matchup between Makhachev and Topuria remains to be seen. Topuria has expressed a desire to follow Makhachev up to 170 pounds and attempt to become the first in UFC history to claim titles in three separate weight classes. UFC CEO Dana White recently said the super fight could materialize if each man wins one more fight. There are a number of potential contenders in play for Topuria's first defense at 155 pounds, including Justin Gaethje, Paddy Pimblett, Arman Tsarukyan or a rematch with BMF champ Max Holloway. Makhachev, meanwhile, will attempt to join the group of 10 previous fighters to capture belts in multiple weight classes when he faces Jack Della Maddalena, which he said is "90 percent" on the way to being finalized and announced.
