A sci-fi sequel 13 years in the making is now closer than ever – with a Marvel director at the helm

After years of fan requests and failed starts, it seems a sci-fi sequel we've all prayed for is finally back on the cards. What's more, the director of Thor: Ragnarok, The Mandalorian and What We Do in the Shadows is reportedly attached.
It's been 13 years since Dredd hit cinemas (in 3D, no less) and even though its star Karl Urban (Star Trek, The Boys) was keen to get cracking on a sequel, it sadly never happened.
The owner of iconic British comic 2000AD (in which Judge Dredd appears), Rebellion, even created its own TV and movie production company, and announced a TV spin-off: Judge Dredd: Mega-City One. But news on that went quiet too.
Now it seems the plans have reverted to making another film, with Taika Waititi set to direct (via Deadline) and the writer of The Fall Guy, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, and Iron Man 3, Drew Pearce, tasked with writing the screenplay.
Not much else is known about the movie yet – whether it's going to head to cinemas first or will be for one of the big streaming services. However, the fact that it's finally in the works again is enough reason to celebrate.
With Waititi on board it is likely to have more of a sense of humour than 2012's Dredd. And it doesn't have to try very hard to be better than Stallone's portrayal of the Judge in the 1995 misfire.
Comic book fans will already appreciate that the strip originally created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra has a dark sense of humour that offsets the extreme bouts of violence. It often plays as satire to the politics and trends of today, so it'd be great to see some of that come through in the next movie,
If so, it's more likely to be a reboot than a sequel, although I'd personally love to see Urban offered the eponymous role once more. He truly understands what makes Joe Dredd so unique, even amongst other Judges, while his acceptance in playing the part without ever taking his helmet off was admirable.
It looks like we'll have a while to wait before the new film gets fully underway, let alone being available to watch. But in the meantime, Duncan Jones' Rogue Trooper movie adaptation from another 2000AD property seems to be coming along well and should hit theatres beforehand.

Christopher Nolan's ‘The Odyssey': Tickets for Imax 70MM Screenings Now Officially on Sale a Year Out
A new chapter is being added to Hollywood's encyclopedia of marketing tactics, thanks to Universal and Christopher Nolan. Exactly a year to the day of the release of Nolan's The Odyssey, advance tickets are already on sale for Imax theaters that are equipped to screen the epic in 70mm film, the Oscar-winning filmmaker's format of choice. The offer officially commenced Thursday at midnight ET, according to Imax's social feed. One caveat: as of now, there are are only 16 sites in the U.S. that aer part of the offering, six in Canada, two in in the U.K., one in Australia and one the Czech Republic. More locations are expected to be added in the coming months as Imax audiotorums are equpped with 70mm projection, including Regal LA Live. Nolan's take on the classic Greek myth — starring Matt Damon as the eternal hero Odysseus — is being shot entirely on Imax film cameras, a first for a commercial feature. Until now, such a feat would have been impossible. But after the success of his Oscar-winning Oppenheimer, Nolan approached Imax about upgrading its cameras, including resolving issues with processing the cameras' 70 mm film stock and the weight of the equipment. Imax screens ponied up more than $190 million of Oppenheimer's total global gross of $975.8 million, or 20 percent. 'Chris called me up and said, 'If you can figure out how to solve the problems, I will make [Odyssey] 100 percent in Imax.' And that's what we're doing,' Imax CEO Rich Gelfond recalled when speaking at the company's annual press lunch at the Cannes Film Festival this past May. 'He forced us to rethink that side of our business, our film recorders, our film cameras.' The new film cameras are reserved for Nolan for now, but after he wraps The Odyssey, Imax will begin renting them out to other directors. Nolan has always been a big fan of Imax cameras, which he used when shooting Dunkirk, Interstellar, The Dark Knight movies and Tenet. The Odyssey has a net budget of $250 million, which will make it the most expensive film of Nolan's career. The improbable blockbuster success of the atomic energy biopic Oppeneheimer proved yet again why Nolan is one of the few directors who can reliably deliver an all-audience event film, and The Odyssey's epic scope and A-list cast should prove a major draw. In addition to Damon, the film stars Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Jon Bernthal, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron and Mia Goth. The classic story follows the king of Ithaca as he undertakes a long and perilous journey home to his wife Penelope following the Trojan War. His challenges are many as he spends years encountering a succession of mythical beings including the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, the enchantress Circe, and travels to the Underworld. The first teaser trailer for Nolan's event pic debuted exclusively in theaters in front of Universal's Jurassic World Rebirth, which opened over the Fourth of July corridor to huge numbers and continues to be a major draw. Releasing the trailer so early is a bit unusual, considering that The Odyssey is still filming, but an all-audience tentpole such as Rebirth provided an opportunity Universal and Nolan's team couldn't pass up, even if the teaser was leaked online. Word of the advance ticket sales were also leaked when certain theater chains jumped the gun and posted notices that tickets would go on sale for the select 70mm screenings July 17. Eminem Documentary ‘Stans' Books Limited August Run in AMC Theatres
A new documentary about rapper legend Eminem is headed for a limited run on the big screen. AMC Theatres has come aboard to distribute Stans in the U.S., and has committed to playing the doc in more than 135 of its domestic locations beginning Aug. 7 and ending Aug. 10. Overseas, Trafalgar Releasing will release the doc at the same time in more than 1,600 theaters across 50 markets. The Eminem-produced doc (trailer, below) opened the inaugural London edition of the SXSW festival earlier this year, and is inspired by the artist's 2000 iconic song 'Stan,' about an obsessive, unstable fan who takes his admiration for the rapper too far. In London, director Steven Leckart described how he flipped the music documentary format on its head. Stans film follows not just the musician's artistic trajectory but that of his most loyal superfans, with the doc 'offering an entertaining and vibrant look at the modern nature of fandom and how social media has irrevocably changed the relationship between artists and their audience.' (The term 'Stan' was officially added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2017). Leckart said after the premiere during a Q&A: 'I was raised on hip-hop in the '80s and '90s, and I grew up on MTV. So I witnessed [Eminem's] rise's first hand and I was a fan, but I think I just kept coming back to the song 'Stan' and really thinking about how unconventional it was and still is.' He continued: 'I just saw an opportunity to make an unconventional doc … We've seen a glut of docs that are just so straightforward and standard. And so this is a beautiful opportunity to do something different.' Other producers include Paul Rosenberg, Stuart Parr, Antoine Fuqua, Tony DiSanto, David Schiff with DIGA Studios in association with Shady Films, Fuqua Films, Interscope Films, and MTV Entertainment Studios. ‘Lilo & Stitch 2' a Go at Disney
Walt Disney Pictures is officially moving ahead on a sequel to the live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch. The announcement was made via social media Thursday, timed to June 26, aka 6-26. The movie has grossed over $923 million worldwide on a budget of about $100 million. Most movies with that kind of box office usually have more than double Lilo's budget. The movie has humble origins that are in keeping with a Stitch-like, gleeful and chaotic vibe: It was initially headed to Disney+ as an original movie for the platform before execs reconsidered its release and upgraded it to theatrical. Remaking the animated 2002 movie directed by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois, the story centers on a young lonely girl, played by Maia Kealoha, who befriends a whirling dervish of blue dog, who happens to be an on-the-run alien genetically engineered as a creature of destruction. Zach Galifianakis and Billy Magnussen play aliens in human form who are hunting Experiment 626. Dean Fleischer Camp directed the movie, which was written by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright and Mike Van Waes. It was produced by Jonathan Eirich and Dan Lin, the latter now the head of Netflix Films. Ryan Halprin and Louis Provost executive produced, as well as Tom Peitzman and Thomas Schumacher. Thursday's announcement did not specify any creative team on board for the sequel.
