Scams, forgotten passwords, and lost fortunes: Meet the digital locksmith who helps people get their bitcoin back

Yahoo7 days ago
Crypto prices are surging, and so are cases of lost crypto keys and crypto scams.
Crypto recovery specialist Julia Burlingham is seeing a business boom as a result.
Here's what happens if you lose access to your crypto wallet.
Forgetting your Instagram password is annoying. Forgetting your crypto wallet password could be devastating.
Crypto owners don't have the luxury of emailing themselves a password reset link if they're locked out of their self-custody wallet. It's an issue that's becoming bigger as bitcoin and other cryptos surge in price and crypto holders scramble to retrieve previously abandoned wallets.
For Julia Burlingham, who owns the business Professional Crypto Recovery, business is booming.
"When the price of bitcoin goes up, my phone rings all day," Burlingham told Business Insider.
Burlingham started her business five years ago, after helping her brother recover his dogecoin during the memecoin's heyday. According to Burlingham, she was able to unlock his wallet, where an initial $300 investment had grown to $6,000.
She's seen it all, from people who inherit locked crypto wallets to those who have misplaced their seed phrase. Here's what it's like inside the world of crypto recovery.
How does crypto storage work?
There are two main ways of holding crypto: on an exchange like Coinbase, or through self-custody using your own crypto wallet.
While self-custody provides more control and privacy, the responsibility of securing the wallet lies in — as the name implies — yourself. Setting up a self-custody wallet generates a seed phrase of 12 or 24 random words that encodes your private key.
People often write the seed phrase down with pen and paper, according to Jess Houlgrave, CEO at the digital asset startup Reown. Issues arise when that slip of paper isn't stored securely.
"As soon as you're in the self-custodial realm, you need to be able to store and recover your seed phrase in order to be able to use the assets," Houlgrave told Business Insider.
She's also seen people store their passkeys on Google Drive or password managers, which Houlgrave doesn't recommend, as those methods are susceptible to being hacked.
Both Houlgrave and Burlingham mentioned that the LA wildfires earlier this year resulted in many people losing their seed phrases when their homes burned down.
Last year, Reuters reported that some wallet recovery services saw requests for their services more than triple when bitcoin rose to $70,000. Now, with bitcoin prices firmly in six-figure territory, the stakes are even higher.
A day in the life of a crypto locksmith
Burlingham helps people with issues such as forgotten passwords, partial seed phrases, corrupted wallet files, or old wallets that no longer sync with the blockchains.
Her clients range from original bitcoin investors who bought over a decade ago to people who just set up their accounts recently and suddenly lost access.
"Depending on the wallet, sometimes you can brute force it," Burlingham said.
It helps if you remember fragments of a password or seed phrase.
"I'll ask for password clues and how they typically make their passwords," Burlingham added.
Using specialized supercomputers with high GPU and CPU power, Burlingham runs password recovery tools that test millions of combinations. Because wallets and private keys are highly sensitive, she runs them on air-gapped computers, or machines that aren't connected to the internet.
Burlingham also helps those who have been scammed of their crypto, a growing problem. According to a report by Chainalysis, more than $2 billion was stolen from cryptocurrency services already in 2025, surpassing the total for all of 2024.
The recovery process can take months. One case that Burlingham started in November of last year took until this April to finish.
Recovering crypto is also an energy intensive endeavor.
"It's really high," Burlingham said of her electricity bill. "You have to have cooling systems because these machines produce a lot of heat."
Lost crypto
Unfortunately, sometimes, nothing can be done to recover the crypto. According to crypto wallet provider Ledger, it's estimated that between two and four million bitcoins are permanently lost.
James Howell is an infamous example of this unlucky outcome — the IT worker accidentally threw away a hard drive containing 8,000 bitcoins back in 2013.
In the case of crypto, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound — or several — of cure.
Make multiple copies of your seed phrase and putting them into secure physical locations, such as a locked safe or bank vault, Burlingham recommends. And it may sound simple, but avoiding phishing links and keeping your seed phrase private are steps that many people still overlook.

Old Trump speech falsely linked to South Korea trade deal

Social media posts have recirculated an old video of US President Donald Trump and falsely presented it as depicting him calling South Korean leader Lee Jae Myung a "bad negotiator" after their countries agreed a trade deal. The clip in fact shows Trump criticising then president Barack Obama as he launched his presidential campaign in June 2015. "Trump mocks Lee Jae Myung as a bad negotiator," reads a Korean-language post featuring the clip on Naver Band, a South Korean forum, on July 31, 2025. "[Trump] mocked Lee as soon as the tariff negotiations finished. [Lee] has become a total pushover," it continues. The video shows Trump saying, "The people negotiating don't have a clue. Our president doesn't have a clue. He's a bad negotiator." But its Korean subtitles mistranslate "our president" as "their president". The clip was also shared in similar posts on multiple right-wing South Korean circles on Facebook, as well as on YouTube. "The way that fool Lee acted as he did, no wonder he is being mocked," read a comment on one of the posts. Another said: "An international embarrassment to be used like that, then mocked by the US president." Under the trade deal, the United States will impose a 15 percent tariff on South Korean imports -- down from the previously threatened 25 percent -- in exchange for $350 billion in South Korean investments in US industries and $100 billion in energy purchases (archived link). A keyword search on Google found the clip corresponds to a part of a speech Trump gave on June 16, 2015, when he announced his bid for the presidency (archived link). At around the 18:50 mark of the speech posted in full by CSPAN, Trump makes the comment: "The people negotiating don't have a clue. Our president doesn't have a clue. He's a bad negotiator." This was part of a broader tirade against the Obama administration's trade and foreign policies. Trump then references a prisoner swap involving US soldier Bowe Bergdahl to illustrate his criticism of Obama's negotiating skills. Bergdahl was a US Army sergeant who was captured by the Taliban in 2009 after walking off his post in Afghanistan and was released in 2014 in exchange for five Taliban detainees held at Guantanamo Bay (archived link). "We get Bergdahl. We get a traitor. We get a no-good traitor, and they get the five people that they wanted for years, and those people are now back on the battlefield trying to kill us. That's the negotiator we have," Trump said. A full transcript of the speech published by Time magazine also shows Trump was referring to Obama (archived link). Nowhere in the video or transcript does Trump mention South Korea or Lee Jae Myung. AFP has previously debunked similar instances of Trump remarks and social media posts being misrepresented as references to South Korea.

Bitcoin Sits Tight, But There's One Solana Token Turning Heads: Analysis

So much for crypto volatility, eh? The market is more or less trading sideways at the moment, with nearly 90% of all digital assets moving less than 4% in either direction over the past 24 hours. Bitcoin is sitting tight, hugging the $117,000 to $118,000 price zone, as it has been for days now. But there's at least one token bucking the trend—and defying expectations. Not too long ago, things were looking grim for PUMP token on the Solana network. Just last week, in fact, it was the worst-performing crypto asset by a long shot. Today, though, PUMP is living up to its name, up a whopping 18%. Why? Well, let's zoom out first. Total crypto market capitalization sits at $3.87 trillion, inching up just 0.31% from yesterday, according to Coinmarketcap, as traders digest the Federal Reserve's decision to maintain interest rates at 4.25-4.5% for the fifth consecutive meeting. Just for reference, the average dip in the top 100 coins by market cap was around 1% in the 24 hours by the time of writing this analysis. Traditional markets also showed strength—the S&P 500 climbed 0.92% to 6,421 points and gold rose 0.64% to $3,295.62 per troy ounce, as investors wait and see how tariffs will impact markets and how regulatory developments affect the financial landscape. The broader context includes oil prices holding at $76.34 per barrel amid Middle East tensions and the recent signing of the GENIUS Act, which officially legalizes stablecoins in the United States. Bitcoin price: The consolidation will continue until… Bitcoin trading flat today might seem unremarkable, but the technical picture shows a market at a critical juncture. The flagship cryptocurrency's price action reflects a tug-of-war between whale accumulation and profit-taking pressures. The Relative Strength Index, or RSI, for Bitcoin sits at exactly 60, and has been slowing down, showing that markets may be cooling after a pretty steady spike towards a new all-time high not long ago. RSI is like a temperature gauge for markets, measuring how hot an asset might be on a scale from 0 to 100. An RSI reading of 60 for BTC suggests traders are waiting for a clear directional signal before committing to larger positions. When RSI hovers at this midpoint, it often precedes significant moves in either direction. This can be confirmed after looking at the price pattern, which has been trading sideways for the last two weeks and puts BTC inside a symmetric triangle that is about to be broken. The Average Directional Index, or ADX, for Bitcoin is at 22. ADX measures trend strength regardless of direction, and a score of 22 confirms the weakening of the bull hype. An ADX below 25 indicates no clear trend is established, suggesting Bitcoin is coiling for a potential breakout. Traders typically view this as a period of accumulation before the next major move. Exponential Moving Averages, or EMAs, are also handy indicators for traders. EMAs take the average price of an asset over a given period. Bitcoin's 50-day EMA suggests dynamic support around current levels, while the 200-day EMA sits lower, creating what traders would interpret as a bullish market structure. The Squeeze Momentum Indicator shows the market is 'on," indicating volatility compression that often precedes explosive moves—an event that could trigger the breakout outside of the triangle pattern. Key Levels: Immediate support: $115,000 (accumulation zone) Strong support: $112,000 (psychological level—the supports are very close because the coin is pretty much flat) Immediate resistance: $120,000 (round number resistance) Strong resistance: $123,171 (all-time high—same logic behind the close supports) Pump's PUMP pumps as buybacks fuel rally Now onto today's big winner: PUMP is pumping. The Solana token spiked 18% today, making it the market's standout performer. Why? Ever heard of stock buybacks? Well, it's like that, but for crypto. aggressive buyback program is turning heads across the meme coin sector. The project announced it would use 100% of daily platform fees—approximately $2.16 million on July 30—to repurchase PUMP tokens from the market. It's almost certainly what triggered PUMP's bullish swing—or at the very least what provided PUMP holders enough confidence to prevent prices from dumping even more. This was also enough to make the token go from the worst-performing cryptocurrency in the top 100 to the best-performing coin in today's otherwise flat and boring market. Technical indicators can only be studied in short time frames because the coin is too young for other oscillators to work. However, things point towards a relief rally after a major bearish panic. In terms of the current price trend, there is support forming that traders would say paints a bullish recovery. The support, though, is still weak, but it has been tested successfully in the last three days. Looking at a broader outlook, the resistance at around its current $0.003 price zone marks a possible ascending triangle about to be tested. Generally speaking, ascending triangles (a flat resistance and an ascending support) tend to be considered a bullish formation. PUMP's RSI at 57.09 shows healthy buying momentum without approaching overbought territory above 70. This suggests room for further upside before profit-taking typically kicks in. Traders often target RSI readings between 50-70 as the "sweet spot" for trend continuation. The RSI going up during the latest candlesticks is also a good sign for the bulls—not enough to say markets are bullish, but probably interesting enough to set up buy orders. The ADX at 19 indicates a weak trend, but context is crucial here: PUMP is emerging from a severe downtrend that saw it drop 62% from its peaks. Low ADX readings after extended declines often signal the early stages of reversal, particularly when accompanied by volume spikes like today's 25.68% increase to $683.9 million. So what does that mean? Basically, bearish dominance is slowing down, but also current bullish behavior doesn't necessarily suggest number go up in the short term. Only that number has stopped going down—for now. PUMP did, however, break above a descending resistance line that had capped rallies for two weeks. This technical breakout, combined with the fundamental catalyst of buybacks, typically attracts momentum traders. Buybacks are bullish, what can we say. So long as the one doing the buying back has deep enough bags to keep it going. Key Levels: Strong support: $0.0025 (previous resistance turned support) Strong resistance: $0.0040 (psychological level and bearish trigger from July 24) Error in retrieving data Sign in to access your portfolio Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data

Solana Co-Founder Slams Memecoins And NFTs In Clash With Base Lead Developer: 'Digital Slop'

Benzinga and Yahoo Finance LLC may earn commission or revenue on some items through the links below. Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko is condemning memecoins and non-fungible tokens again. 'I've said this for years. Memecoins and NFTs are digital slop and have no intrinsic value,' he said Sunday on X, even though these tokens have driven revenue on Solana over the past year, as its low cost and high throughput have ironically made it the preferred venue for trading them. Yakovenko compared the tokens to in-game loot boxes, which have no real-world value but see players spend billions of dollars annually. Loot boxes have also been criticized for having similar mental effects to gambling and encouraging 'pay-to-win' dynamics. Yakovenko's most recent critique of memecoins and NFTs followed a heated debate with Jesse Pollak, lead developer of the Coinbase-incubated (NASDAQ:COIN) Ethereum Layer 2 chain Base, over whether the network's so-called 'contentcoins' are any different from memecoins launched on Solana's Pollak rejected the idea of contentcoins being similar to memecoins as a 'logical fallacy.' 'The content itself is valuable,' Pollak said. 'Ads are a way to monetize that value. But the content itself is valuable. Just like a painting is fundamentally valuable, regardless of whether you charge people at the museum to see it.' But Yakovenko suggested that contentcoins and memecoins offered no value beyond speculation. He pointed out that contentcoin holders had no claims to future ad revenue from the content. He also said they faced the risk of being dumped on by early adopters. Trending: Grow your IRA or 401(k) with Crypto – . Contentcoins Contentcoins are tokens that represent a single piece of digital content. Base launched the concept in April, hoping to catalyze an on-chain creator economy on the network. But many have criticized contentcoins as being only semantically different from memecoins. The Base team had also received backlash from cryptocurrency community members for its rollout of the concept without any explanations, which led to losses for several users. At the time, Base's official X account posted an image with the caption 'Coinbase is for everyone,' following up with another post, stating 'coined it.' The follow-up post contained a link to Zora, a Coinbase-backed decentralized social network that tokenizes content, directing users to purchase a token based on the initial post. Many did, and the token's value surged to $17 million. But holders quickly found themselves holding the bag as the token's value crashed 96% to as low as $720, crash came as Base launched more coins, dividing user attention and sparking confusion. Instead of issuing an apology in the wake of the chaos and backlash, Pollak doubled down. 'Someone has to normalize putting all of our content onchain,' he said. And I'm not afraid for it to be us. Why? Because in the wake of the chaos, we'll normalize the behavior and create a better future for creators.' Base developers have since made contentcoins a central piece of the network's appeal. On July 16, Coinbase rolled out Base App, a rebrand of Coinbase Wallet, featuring a social feed powered by Farcaster, a decentralized social network protocol, and Zora.
