Indian crypto exchange CoinDCX says it lost over $44 million following a hack

CoinDCX, a leading Indian cryptocurrency exchange, confirmed on Saturday, July 19, that a security breach has resulted in the loss of $44.2 million (Rs 380 crore approx.) The Mumbai-based firm has disclosed that hackers compromised and drained all the funds from one of its internal operational accounts that is used for liquidity provisioning, which helps minimise slippage and ensure smoother trading. Ethical hacker ZachXBT was the first to flag the breach, and said that he uncovered the incident 17 hours after it happened. CoinDCX has emphasised that the wallets used to store customer assets were not impacted by the hack. INR withdrawals and other trading activity remain operational. The centralised crypto exchange initially paused its Web3 mode feature as a precautionary measure. A few hours later, it restored the in-app feature that gives users access to over 50,000 DeFi (decentralised finance) tokens. 'The incident was quickly contained by isolating the affected operational account. Since our operational accounts are segregated from customer wallets, the exposure is only limited to this specific account and is being fully absorbed by us – from our own treasury reserves,' Sumit Gupta, Co-founder and CEO, CoinDCX said on X 'Our internal security and operations teams have been working through the day along with leading cybersecurity partners to investigate the matter, patch any vulnerabilities and trace the movement of funds,' he added. CoinDCX also assured that its reserves are sufficient to fully cover the losses from the hack. 'This won't cause any loss to any of our customers and CoinDCX will be bearing the full amount from our treasury reserves, which is sufficiently healthy to cover up for this amount,' Gupta said. Exactly one year ago to the day, hackers breached another Indian crypto exchange, WazirX, and made away with over $230 million in crypto assets. The crypto industry's vulnerability to such incidents remains a pressing concern as it could undermine investor confidence. It could also fuel further scepticism of cryptocurrency by regulators in countries like India, where the sector is still under evaluation. The CoinDCX hack adds to what is already shaping up to be the worst year-to-date on record for crypto thefts. Hackers have stolen more than $2 billion in crypto during the first half of 2025, according to new data from crypto analysis firm Chainalysis. 'I understand incidents like this can be unsettling – even when customer assets are unaffected. That's why I am sharing this incident with you with full transparency,' Gupta said on X. On what to do next, he said that CoinDCX will be collaborating with its exchange partner to block and recover assets. It will also be launching a bug bounty programme soon.

Pakistan cricket's financial woes render PCB unable to sack interim red-ball coach Azhar Mahmood

The Pakistan Cricket Board has not choice but to continue with all-rounder Azhar Mahmood as the interim red-ball head coach despite being unhappy with his performance. Here's why… read more The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) continues to be plagued with financial woes, especially in the aftermath of the ICC Champions Trophy that it hosted earlier this year at home as well as in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The current PCB administration led by Mohsin Naqvi reportedly wanted to sack interim red-ball coach Azhar Mahmood but finds itself unable to do so as it would then have to pay the former all-rounder six months' salary, which amounts to PKR 450 million or INR Rs 1.38 crore – an amount they clearly cannot afford. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'Which is why the PCB recently named him as interim head coach of the national red-ball team until his contract expires next year in April-May,' an insider was quoted by news agency Press Trust of India as saying. Hesson's arrival complicates Azhar's situation The inside added that the board's recent appointment of Mike Hesson as white-ball coach further complicated things as the New Zealander made it clear he wanted his own support staff and did not include Azhar in his team. 'The problem arose when Mike Hesson, the recently-appointed white-ball head coach made it clear he would have his own support staff and Azhar was not among his selections. 'This left the PCB with a major problem of how to utilise Azhar's expertise to justify paying him such a handsome salary, as even if they wanted they couldn't release him without the six months of compensation,' he added. The board, as a result, has little option but to wait until the end of his contract next year. They had faced similar issues when releasing icons such as Waqar Younis, Saqlain Mushtaq, Misbah-ul-Haq among others who had been employed as domestic mentors. Meanwhile, Mahmood isn't too happy about the current situation either, having expressed his desire to be assigned to the national junior team. '(Former pacer) Aaqib Javed, who is now a selector and head of the national cricket academy and close to the board chairman (Mohsin Naqvi), is not impressed with his (Azhar's) coaching style. But to justify his contract for the time being, they have named him as interim head coach of the Test side.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Pakistan yet to achieve stability on coaching front It's not just financial problems the Lahore-based body finds itself plagued with. The board has also witnessed a procession of head coaches – both Pakistani as well as overseas candidates. The PCB had appointed Jason Gillespie and Gary Kirsten as red-ball and white-ball coaches respectively last year in an attempt to bring some stability on the coaching front. Neither ex-South African opener Kirsten nor former Australian pacer Gillespie lasted a year in their roles, with the former submitting his resignation inside six months. Former Pakistan pacer Aaqib Javed would then combine Kirsten and Gillespie's roles to serve as interim head coach across formats until the disappointing Champions Trophy campaign, where the hosts crashed out in the group stage without winning a single match.

BCCI nets Rs 9,741 cr in FY24, IPL alone accounts for 59%

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) earned INR 9,741.7 crore in revenue during the financial year 2023–24, as per the latest ICYMI report citing official data. The IPL alone contributed INR 5,761 crore, that's over 59 percent of the board's total earnings. A two-month tournament generating more than half the annual revenue of the world's richest cricket board speaks volumes of the event's commercial heft. From media rights and sponsorships to ticketing and merchandise, the IPL remains BCCI's crown jewel. According to the report, the BCCI received a hefty INR 1,042 crore from the International Cricket Council (ICC), accounting for 10.70 percent of its total revenue. While cricket was being played on the field, the BCCI was quietly making money off it. Interest from fixed deposits and investments contributed INR 987 crore to the board's income, a smart financial play that made up over 10 percent of total revenues. In a notable debut, the Women's Premier League (WPL) brought in INR 378 crore, signaling a strong start and a potentially transformative shift for women's cricket in India. Meanwhile, broadcasting rights for non-IPL international matches contributed INR 361 crore, reaffirming that traditional cricket still holds considerable value. Adding to this were INR 361 crore from ticket sales, hospitality, and commercial rights related to Men's internationals tours, and INR 400 crore from miscellaneous sources proving that even off-the-pitch cricket sells. The report concluded, with 59 percent of its revenue from IPL and growing streams like WPL and global rights, BCCI has built a billion-rupee engine powered by fan love, smart deals, and cricketing excellence.
