How do famous names spend their precious downtime? In our weekly My Saturday column, celebrities reveal their weekend virtues and vices. This week: George Russell
9am
The first thing I do is jump in cold water. I live on the coast in Monaco so I'll go down in the lift from my flat and get straight in the sea, or into the ice bath at home. I have to pinch myself that I live here. I left school young so my friends are from the racing world, as well as athletes like tennis players and cyclists, who live here, too. To be in the top 20 of any sport requires huge discipline and sacrifice, so it's good to have like-minded people around you.
10am
I never train on an empty stomach. Breakfast is overnight oats, berries and banana with yogurt, then avocado toast with ham or turkey. If it's not an intense day of training, I'll go for a cappuccino; if it is, an espresso.
11am
A two-hour strength session. The most unusual workout routine racing drivers have to do is train our necks. We're strapped into the race car over our shoulders, our laps and through our crotch, so we've got a six-point harness and we go through corners at 160 miles an hour with the g-force pulling on our bodies. It's like your neck is trying to fly off. To put it into simple terms, imagine you're in the back of a car and someone goes round a roundabout quickly – yet going 50 times faster than that. My neck can see up to 50 kilos of force.

My nutritionist says I need different colours so I have pasta with cucumber, tomatoes and yellow pepper to get the fuel in and carb up.
2pm
Nap for 20 minutes – my trainer calls it a nap-uccino. I'll have an espresso before because coffee takes a good 45 minutes to kick in so it helps me wake up. I need a little nap to reset, but I can't overdo it or I feel like I don't know where I am in the world. There aren't many days I'm not moving. Deep down, I would love to be in a single location but, last week, I had nine flights in seven days. I'm pretty good with jet lag – my technique is shifting one hour per day. Before I travelled to Sydney for the Grand Prix, that took a lot of discipline. I started going to sleep one hour earlier each day so, the day before, I'm trying to sleep at 6pm, which messes with my brain.
3pm
Interval training or a 12k run. Monaco is so small that I end up running to Italy, then France, and back over the border. I run the Grand Prix track, through the tunnel of the Monaco race, and do two laps of the harbour. It's going to be an exciting season. I've always been the youngest and suddenly I'm the older of the two partners – when I was teammates with Lewis Hamilton, I looked up to him, so it does become a bit surreal. Kimi [Antonelli, George's new partner for Mercedes after Lewis Hamilton left for Ferrari] is a great kid. He's been thrown in at the deep end and he's super-fast, I'm sure he's going to keep me on my toes. I'm entering a different chapter in my career but it doesn't change my approach. My job is to drive the car as fast as possible – whether I've got a seven-time world champion or an 18-year-old rookie as a teammate, I go about my business just the same.
5pm
I'm terrible at relaxing, I can't sit around. I like playing padel with the other drivers or free diving, which is incredible for clearing my mind, because you have to solely focus on your breathing. But the most time I ever have off is half a day. I don't see anything in the Grand Prix destinations – I'm not taking this for granted and I'm not there to go sightseeing, I'm there to perform – but my favourite place is Austin because we always fly straight on to Mexico City afterwards, so we get to spend a couple of days there. On flights, I'll watch the race from the year before to get into the rhythm of that race weekend.
7pm
Within 200 metres of my flat, I've got the coffee shop I love – where I always see Toto Wolff – and my favourite restaurant, Cantinetta Antinori. I order yellowtail sashimi and this nice panettone they've somehow created a starter with. Their specialty is carbonara, so I'll have that or a good steak, followed by tiramisu. My girlfriend Carmen [Montero Mundt] and I talk and catch up on the day.
9pm
I try to be disciplined over scrolling social media as we live in a toxic world. It's challenging being in the public eye, everyone's got an opinion on what you do, what you say, how you look – it's often quite amusing. Instead, I watch Lost, which I've never seen before and it's a bit edge of the seat so it doesn't help the sleep, but I wind down by turning the lights down and watching with blue light blocker glasses on, so I look a bit funny.
11pm
My coach says sleep is free performance. I'm quite relaxed the night before a race. I believe in myself and – it sounds cliché – but what will happen will happen. If I put the maximum effort in, there's nothing more I can do to give myself the best shot at victory. If you let nerves impact you, it's going to impact the result. I get butterflies before every single race, we all feel an element of pressure and if you didn't, you wouldn't care, but I need to limit that as much as possible.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has revealed that Lewis Hamilton still asks him for dating advice despite joining rivals Ferrari last year. The seven-time world champion parted ways with Mercedes after twelve seasons but has endured a disappointing debut campaign with Ferrari. The 40-year-old is currently sitting in sixth place in the Drivers Championship table, behind team-mate Charles Leclerc and 131 points behind runaway leader Oscar Piastri. Wolff has been Mercedes' team principal since 2013 and despite Hamilton's departure, the duo remain close, with the German claiming they still 'trust each other'. He told The Wall Street Journal: 'I tried to be very open and say, "Listen, on the racetrack, we want to beat you. No doubt about that." But it's been 12 years that we have been in this relationship. We trust each other.' Wolff even revealed that Hamilton asks him for advice about who he should date. 'I'm living a different life through his eyes, you know, he shows me his flirts and who he dates, and [asks], "Should I go for this girl or not?"' he said. 'And I'm saying, "Yes, you should, and tell me how it was!"' Hamilton remains so friendly with his former boss that he still visit his former side. He 'pops up in the office on the weekend! He speaks with the engineers, gets some food,' Wolff said. Hamilton has largely kept quiet about his love life, although he famously dated Nicole Scherzinger until 2014. The F1 star had met Scherzinger at the MTV EMAs in 2007 and they were together for 20 months but split for the first time in January 2010, before later reconciling. They then split again in late 2011, before giving their relationship another go in early 2012. They called time on things once again in July 2013, which prompted Scherzinger to break down in tears during her time on the X Factor judging panel. By February 2014 things were back on, before their final separation the following year. Hamilton famously had an on-off relationship with American pop star Nicole Scherzinger The reason for the final split had been put down to the pressures of a long-distance relationship, with Hamilton frequently travelling as part of the sprawling F1 circuit. 'I'm devastated that it didn't work out. It was the hardest decision we had to make, but we made it together,' Scherzinger said in 2015. 'We wish nothing but happiness and the very best for one another.' Hamilton admitted he had learned from the high-profile nature of the relationship, and claimed in 2022 that he was 'happy on my own.' 'I learned the hard way, I learned the hard way,' Hamilton said. Everyone was beginning to move on with their lives after 10 pretty relentless days of Oisin Murphy drink-drive chat, until he agreed to be interviewed on Sky Sports Racing on Monday night. Advertisement 1 Oisin Murphy attacked the media during a recent interview on Sky Sports Credit: Chris Eades - Commissioned by The Sun I stumbled across the video while scrolling on Twitter, sandwiched between a post about fantasy football and a tweet (or should that be a hoot?) about owls. Standard. Like the rest of my feed, the interview with Matt Chapman at Windsor should have been pretty mundane stuff. After all, there is a tried-and-tested playbook for sports stars, celebrities or politicians when answering questions about a misdemeanour on the record. You know the sort of thing I'm talking about: 'I'm incredibly sorry, it was a huge error of judgement. I'm going to change,' etc etc. Advertisement Then Oisin began talking, and the first thing to come out of his mouth was: 'There was going to be a lot said in the media and it's important not to allow the media to bully you too much.' Is he for real? Everything I've read and heard so far about this depressing case has, categorically, been fair comment. Despite everything that's happened during his turbulent career, he still behaves like he is above criticism. He is not just the four-time champion jockey, he also is a role model. His actions will rightly be scrutinised and he will be held to account, whether he likes it or not, just like other people in similar positions of privilege. Advertisement When asked by Chapman about the well-being of the female passenger who was in the Mercedes he crashed into a tree while over the limit, he said: 'There was a lot of misinformation in the press, much of it spread by your colleagues. Fortunately she is very well.' What a crock of s***. To my knowledge, there was never any reporting in the British press about the condition of the girl outside of the initial police report. She was not named by the police or in court therefore she wasn't identified by the media, let alone speculation printed or broadcast about her injuries, or lack thereof. When dealing with criminal matters, there are legal guidelines the media have to work within. Advertisement Nothing before, during or after the court case would have been published without the OK or advice from lawyers, so where is his evidence of misinformation? This was a lame Donald Trump tribute act. You can't just shout 'fake news' because you aren't a fan of what's being said. At first, I thought he was possibly conflating (or even confusing) the actual media and social media. Mind you, he emphasised to Chapman 'your colleagues'. It did not appear to be a slip of the tongue. Advertisement He added: 'Not everyone wants one to achieve, there's a lot of jealousy, particularly in the media, but I worked all my life to ride good horses and I'll continue to do that.' Who exactly is jealous? I stopped being jealous of other's achievements when I was 13-years-old. He didn't offer an apology but there was a degree of contrition in the interview — he said he'd been having counselling and it had been a 'nightmare' for all involved. He thanked the BHA, his support network and said he was the only person who could stop his career progressing. He's not wrong. Advertisement So why go after the press? As soon as you deflect and begin involving other people you are, by definition, refusing to take full responsibility or ownership of your actions. And that is the only way to deal with a situation like this. Also, who the hell is advising him? Prince Andrew's PR team? Greg Wallace, perhaps? You play this sorry saga with a straight bat, even if you don't care about what's happened, and those around him should have told him as much. You don't come out playing shots and blaming others. Advertisement It sounds like he is getting professional help, which is clearly a positive, but he has not stated publicly since the accident his intention to give up alcohol. He doesn't need to look far for inspiration — look what Richard Hughes achieved in the saddle when he knocked drink on the head. Dealing with addiction requires commitment, you have to be in it for the long haul and prepared to confront your problems. Believe it or not, Oisin, everyone in this sport thinks you are a supreme talent and they want you to sort yourself out. But you are not the victim in this case. Advertisement It'll be interesting to see if he fulfils his media obligations the next time he wins a big race on a Saturday. Questions will continue to be asked because, judging by this car crash of an interview (pun intended), it appears he's learned little.
