Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo will embark on a working visit to Japan from May 28 to 30, 2025, where he will speak at an international forum.
Manalo will be one of the speakers at Japanese media organization Nikkei Inc.'s 'Future of Asia' (FOA) forum, an annual gathering of political, economic, and academic leaders from across the Asia-Pacific region. This year's forum carries the theme 'Asia's Challenge in a Turbulent World,' reflecting the region's shared concerns amid rising geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainties.
The FOA forum, launched in 1995, serves as a platform for influential voices to exchange insights and explore solutions to pressing regional and global issues.
Aside from his participation in the forum, Manalo is also scheduled to meet with Japanese Foreign Minister Iwaya Takeshi to continue discussions stemming from the recent bilateral meeting between President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. and Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru in Manila on April 29. — Sherylin Untalan/BM, GMA Integrated News

PCC clears Mitsubishi's 50% acquisition of GCash ultimate parent firm

The Philippine Competition Commission (PCC) on Thursday announced it has cleared the proposed joint venture between Ayala Corporation and Japanese mega-conglomerate Mitsubishi Corporation. In particular, Mitsubishi is acquiring a 50% stake in Ayala's AC Ventures Holding Corporation. In approving the proposed transaction, the antitrust watchdog said Mitsubishi's investment in AC Ventures would not significantly reduce competition in the relevant market for the provision of Quick Response code-based digital payments to merchants. AC Ventures will be jointly controlled by Ayala and Mitsubishi post-transaction. The company is Ayala's venture capital arm, the parent company Globe Fintech Innovations Inc. (Mynt), which in turn is the firm behind GCash operator G-Xchange Inc. and tech-based microlender Fuse Lending. The PCC, in its decision, cited "the small market share held by GCash in the provision of QR-based Person-to-Merchant payments, as well as the strong governmental push for interoperability in QR-based payments across the country." While Mitsubishi indirectly owns convenience store chain Lawson Philippines, which accepts QR code-based payments from consumers, the antitrust watchdog said it has limited presence and that the transaction would not result in substantial lessening of competition, according to PCC. Person-to-merchant payments, through the use of QR codes, enables businesses to accept digital payments from consumers for goods and services that the business sells. The Philippine Competition Act mandates the PCC to review mergers and acquisitions to ensure transactions do not lead to a substantial lessening of competition in relevant markets. — VDV, GMA Integrated News

PH debt surpasses P17 trillion in June 2025

The Philippine government's total outstanding debt surpassed the P17-trillion mark in June as the administration issued securities during the month, data released by the Bureau of the Treasury (BTr) on Wednesday showed. The total outstanding debt stood at $17.267 trillion as of end-June, up 2.1% from $16.918 trillion in May, and 11% higher than the $15.483 billion in June 2024. The BTr attributed the increase to 'strong investor demand for government securities,' with $11.950-trilion worth of domestic borrowings during the month—$886.478 billion in treasury bills, and $11.063 trillion in treasury bonds. 'This strategy is consistent with the government's goal to boost the local capital market while lowering foreign exchange risks and building investor trust in Philippine-issued securities,' the BTr said in an accompanying statement. External debt stood at $5.316 trillion, marking a 3.5% increase from the $5.138 trillion in the previous month. This includes $2.602 trillion in loans, and $2.714 trillion in external debt securities. 'The national government's prudent debt management approach strategy reflects the Marcos Jr. administration's commitment to safeguarding fiscal sustainability, supporting inclusive growth, and ensuring that every peso borrowed is used to build a stronger economy for the Filipino people,' the BTr said. — BM, GMA Integrated News
