Abu Dhabi – The Emirates College for Advanced Education (ECAE) hosted the third edition of the Universities Collaboration Forum, an initiative by the Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority (ECA). The forum brought together 11 leading universities and academic institutions from across the UAE to support dialogue, collaboration, and knowledge exchange aimed at strengthening the Early Childhood Development (ECD) sector in Abu Dhabi.
The college showcased its leadership in driving innovation in ECD, presenting research-driven practices that reflect its commitment to integrating theory and practice. Faculty members delivered interactive presentations, including a demonstration of the 'Interactive Play Lab', the 'Conceptual PlayWorld in Action' session, and a panel discussion titled 'Transforming the Early Childhood Workplace', where. The panelists shared key findings from an ECA-funded ECAE research project, which explores ways to improve the ECD work environment and promote game-based learning strategies. These efforts reflect ECAE's broader goal of supporting national capacity building in early childhood education and promoting the role of academic institutions in advancing evidence-based development in the sector.
The forum aims to encourage joint initiatives by ECA and universities to support the development of ECA-aligned curricula and create an inclusive, high-quality ECD system in partnership with the higher education sector. It also promotes the use of research and data to inform evidence-based policy, strengthen professional development pathways, and build the skills of the ECD workforce.
In her opening remarks, Dr. May Laith Al Taee, Vice Chancellor of ECAE, emphasized the vital role of academic institutions in supporting national efforts to empower and upskill the ECD workforce. 'Early childhood professionals play a critical role in realizing our leadership's vision for creating inclusive and holistic environments that support the healthy and integrated growth of children in our communities,' she noted. 'Through our collaboration with ECA and academic institutions, we work to translate research insights into tangible practices that positively impact children's lives and strengthen the capacity of ECD professionals to lead with excellence and purpose.'
Dr. Hessa Al Kaabi, Executive Director of the Special Projects and Partnerships Sector at ECA, said: 'As part of our commitment to advancing the early childhood development sector in Abu Dhabi, we collaborate with partners across sectors, particularly higher education and research institutions, to generate evidence-based studies that enhance the capabilities of ECD professionals and promote child sustainable development. These research findings are critical resources that empower caregivers and educators, enabling data-driven decision-making in shaping early childhood policies and practices.'
The forum also featured academic success stories, such as Al Ain University's development of early childhood education offerings and United Arab Emirates University's introduction of an elective course on ECD within its general education program for students across disciplines. ECA also presented a series of projects and initiatives aimed at improving early childhood outcomes in Abu Dhabi. The forum drew strong participation from academic institutions, education experts, researchers, and policymakers.
This ongoing collaboration among ECAE, ECA, and academic partners highlights the value of aligning government policy with research to create a sustainable, inclusive, and supportive educational environment for future generations in Abu Dhabi.

Sophie Smith recalls how she decided to never be financially dependent on anyone while growing up in the UK. However, as the founder and chief executive of Nabta Health, a UAE-based healthcare platform for women, she has not drawn a salary in all but several months over the past eight years. As her company is fully backed by angel investors, the Briton, 36, does not feel comfortable receiving monthly pay and instead takes an incentive every quarter. She's currently financially dependent on her husband since moving to Dubai in 2016. Before founding Nabta Health, Ms Smith owned four companies in three years – a doctor-finding, appointment-booking platform in Pakistan, a plastic recycling company in Sierra Leone, a health tech consultancy and a software development company, both in the UK. Nabta Health combines digital and traditional health care to offer preventive care to women. 'Our platform supports in diagnosing chronic health conditions and navigating specific stages as a woman, for example, support with fertility and family planning, after birth, and menopause,' she says. 'To date, my company has been entirely backed by angel investors. We have 68 angel investors in total, most of whom invested through special purpose vehicles, but with investments ranging from $1,000 up to $1 million.' The company has raised $4 million to date and opened a pre-series A funding round of $6 million to expand the platform and acquire new clinics in the UAE. Ms Smith lives with her four children and husband, a lawyer, in a villa in Al Barsha South. She has an MA Cantab (masters in history) from the University of Cambridge and an MBA from the Quantic School of Business and Technology. What was your first job and salary? I started as an analyst with Accenture and worked there for four years before leaving to found my first company. I started on a salary of £32,000 ($43,348) per year and it came with a golden handshake of £5,000, which felt like an absolute fortune for a new graduate in 2010. I was promoted to consultant after 14 months and was on track to be promoted to manager when I quit. I left because I wanted to chart my own growth curve. I had put part of my salary into Accenture's stock programme and by the time I left, I had about £25,000 saved. I took that money and put it into my first company, a health tech consultancy. What is your salary now? When I started work on Nabta Health, I closed down the businesses I had in the UK and was dependent on my husband and the salary he was drawing from his new job in Dubai in 2017. Nabta was self-funded in very small parts by me and my founding investor, to the tune of $92,000 over 15 to 18 months. Since we have raised capital in non-traditional ways, we've never had a significant amount of runway, and I have never felt comfortable with the notion of taking a salary because the company needs the money. I didn't take a salary for the first seven-and-a-half years of Nabta's life until we'd achieved product-market fit in July 2024. I attached myself to the company as the general manager and started to take a salary of Dh33,300 ($9,067) per month after we closed our first $1 million investment, plus an additional Dh12,200 per month which accrues and is paid out quarterly only if we hit our revenue targets. I took the salary for two months before reverting to 100 per cent accrual to support our runway. Not taking a salary has placed a huge financial strain on our family. When we came to the UAE, we had no children and now we have four. Our costs as a family have increased 300 per cent. Do you manage to save and invest? I had savings before I started my first business. But since then, I've put every penny into my companies. I have a small cryptocurrency account, a couple of savings accounts and a few investments in different start-ups that are mostly through sweat equity. I'm a firm believer in having a diversified portfolio of investments and putting your capital to work, especially as a woman. If I had more liquidity, I'd have a more structured investment portfolio. I would also invest into stocks, bonds and safer and more traditional asset classes. I hope to be able to invest in real estate at some point. In the next couple of years as Nabta continues to grow and stabilise us financially, when I'll be able to start taking a regular salary, I hope to put aside probably 10 per cent of that every month to invest into different asset classes. Do you have any debt? We have a couple of credit cards as a family and try to pay them off every month. At different points over the years, we have ended up taking out loans, usually secured against my husband's salary. Within the business, I've taken debt at various points. Growing up, were you taught how to handle your finances? I was not. My father was the sole breadwinner in a house with eight children and he took quite a lot of risks. He co-founded four schools, so he remortgaged our house to support these schools. He managed his finances very closely, but on the flip side, he gave my mom a hard time about money. Growing up, I remember thinking that I'm never going to be financially dependent on anybody. It was one of the reasons why I was so determined to start my own business. What are your major monthly expenses? Rent and school fees. My personal expenses and company overheads are separate. If my husband and I end up covering any of Nabta's expenses, which has occurred when cash flow has been tight, those are rigorously documented and paid back when the company can afford it. Do you have an emergency fund? Yes, our family's emergency fund can sustain us for three months. What do you spend your disposable income on? I spend it on things to manage my health. I take dancing lessons, run, get regular massages and buy new sports equipment every now and then. I also see a Chinese energetics practitioner once a quarter. I worry a lot about money in the context of the company, specifically making payroll and the implications of financial instability of everybody we employ because I am their support system. In the context of my family, I worry about money less because of a very strong support base in the UK. If anything were to happen, we could go back and stay with my family for however long it takes us to normalise. What are your financial goals? Financial sustainability for the company, first and foremost. And then I would like to get to a position where I could sustain my family as a sole breadwinner. I never intended to be in a position where I was financially dependent on somebody. Everybody should enter adult life assuming they can be financially independent. There are all sorts of hidden power dynamics associated with money. In an increasingly volatile world, entering the workforce and adulthood on an even footing is a good thing. What is your idea of financial freedom? To be in a position where you aren't actively worrying about surviving day to day, either in a professional or personal context. I want my company to be able to capitalise on growth opportunities to hire the right people and pay them good money to create financial stability.

The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH) has launched the Integrated Postnatal Care Programme as part of its broader Women's and Children's Health Strategy, in a bid to improve outcomes for mothers and newborns during the crucial postpartum period. The new initiative offers a comprehensive and accessible care model that combines home visits, telemedicine consultations, and outpatient services. It aims to ensure that new mothers receive continuous, personalised support from the moment of discharge through the weeks that follow — helping identify potential concerns early and ensuring timely intervention. As part of the programme, a telemedicine consultation will be offered shortly after a mother and baby leave the hospital. This early virtual check-in is designed to monitor their health and wellbeing, provide expert guidance, and address any immediate concerns — offering peace of mind during the early days at home. In addition, mothers will have the option to visit their nearest hospital or primary care clinic at two key stages: between 7 and 14 days postpartum, and again at six weeks. For mothers who experienced complications during pregnancy or childbirth, or are caring for infants with special health needs, the programme also includes two home visits by a nurse or midwife. The first occurs shortly after discharge, and the second between 7 and 14 days later, offering hands-on support in a familiar environment. 'The postpartum period is one of the most physically and emotionally challenging times in a woman's life – and yet, one of the most overlooked. With the launch of this programme, we prioritise mothers and newborns by providing a robust support system that extends beyond the hospital walls," said Dr Noura Khamis Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH). "By integrating telemedicine, in-person follow-ups, and home-based care, we deliver proactive, personalised services that empower mothers and give every child a healthier start. This is more than just a healthcare programme – it's a commitment to ensuring that every mother and child receives the highest quality of care they deserve," she added.

Fears rising for Gaza doctor held by Israel for 200 days

A Gaza doctor detained by Israeli forces for 200 days without charge or trial is being starved, tortured and denied medical care, his family said. Dr Hossam Abu Safiya, director of Gaza's Kamal Adwan Hospital, was arrested in late December after refusing repeated Israeli orders to leave the medical complex and its patients. He has since been held in an Israeli jail in 'extremely harsh and degrading conditions', said his son, Idrees Abu Safiya. 'The lawyer told us he has been subjected to verbal and physical abuse, humiliation and mistreatment throughout his detention,' the son told The National. 'My father now suffers from multiple health issues due to a lack of medical care and continuous torture in Israeli prisons." The Palestinian paediatrician is being held in solitary confinement, with no sunlight or fresh air, his lawyer said. He is also being starved and has lost more than a third of his weight since being arrested, his son said. He said Dr Abu Safiyah has sustained severe bruising to his face, head, neck and back from being physically assaulted, but the most pressing health concern he faces is his 'irregular and unstable heartbeat, a condition that could become fatal at any moment". His son says the doctor has been denied medical attention. 'The occupation authorities continue to deny him proper medication and refuse to provide the necessary treatment,' he told The National." He has not been examined by any medical specialists to this day." Dr Abu Safiyah was arrested last year during a prolonged Israeli raid on Kamal Adwan Hospital, featuring ground assaults that left it without basic medical necessities and a siege that left patients and medical teams stranded. Israeli bombing reduced many of the hospital's departments to rubble, including the intensive care unit – the only one in northern Gaza – as well as the maternity ward and neonatal unit. Aside from being a lifeline for injured Gazans, the hospital also sheltered hundreds of displaced families. Anyone who stepped out into the hospital courtyard was 'immediately targeted', Dr Abu Safiyeh told The National in an interview last year. The Palestinian doctor has been 'arbitrarily detained' for seven months, according to Amnesty International. It says he is being held under what it calls Israel's "repressive Unlawful Combatants Law", which allows indefinite detention without charge based on suspicion alone. Israel has accused Dr Abu Safiya of being a terrorist and of "holding a rank" in Hamas, a claim his family denies. 'The army claims my father has ties to Hamas, a complete fabrication,' his son told The National. "My father is a doctor, committed solely to serving the Palestinian people through his humanitarian mission in medicine." Experts have warned the targeted detention of medical workers is part of a wider campaign against Gaza's health care system. 'We have documented a significant number of arrests and forced disappearances among Gaza's medical staff,' Ghazi Al Majdalawi, a researcher at the Palestinian Centre for the Missing and Forcibly Disappeared, told The National. 'The evidence indicates a deliberate strategy by the Israeli military to dismantle Gaza's medical infrastructure. 'Doctors are being tortured, humiliated, denied legal counsel and cut off from their families,' he added. 'These acts constitute grave violations of international humanitarian law.'
