Heston Blumenthal reveals he's taking weight-loss drug Wegovy

Telegraph4 days ago
Heston Blumenthal has revealed that he is taking the weight-loss drug Wegovy.
The celebrity chef admitted his use of the drug was a 'paradox' as a restaurateur, and warned that its continued use threatened to topple the food industry.
The father-of-four said he started taking Wegovy to combat the effects of his bipolar medication after he was diagnosed with Type 1 bipolar disorder in 2023. He said the medication had also caused slurred speech, problems with balance and brain fog.
'I've put on so much weight, but it's starting to come off now,' the 59-year-old said, adding that the semaglutide injections had resulted in him losing 8kg so far.
Blumenthal, who has been awarded seven Michelin stars over the course of his three-decade career, also warned the drugs would have an impact on the restaurant industry.
He added: 'Wegovy, Ozempic, Mounjaro – you still enjoy food, but they stop appetite. So what's going to happen is people are going to want smaller portions.'
He told Times Radio it is 'going to get much worse in the next six months' for the restaurant business, adding that supermarkets would also be affected.
The Fat Duck, Blumenthal's three-Michelin starred restaurant, is among the fine dining establishments hit by the decline in appetite, while costs of food, labour and fuel have all increased.
He said he was aiming to 'formulate' a plan that might combat some of the losses from its highly profitable tasting menus, which can feature more than 11 courses.
Blumenthal, who divides his time between Berkshire and France with his wife Melanie, has previously written in The Telegraph about his 'surprise' bipolar diagnosis.
The chef, who presented Channel 4 shows Heston's Fantastical Food and Heston's Feasts, as well as several series of MasterChef in Australia, was sectioned following a manic episode in 2023. He was the subject of BBC documentary Heston: My Life With Bipolar, which was broadcast in June.
Discussing food programmes following the BBC's MasterChef fallout involving the former presenters Gregg Wallace and John Torode, Blumenthal said: 'I don't think food programmes are toxic.
'I think that when you do cooking competition shows, you work with a lot of people, and humans are humans. And that means relationship issues happen.'

Liam Gallagher makes controversial drug reference as he plays up to the cameras after being caught on film entering a portaloo backstage at Oasis reunion show

The musician, 52, was caught on camera by a sneaky fan as he headed inside, but catching the lens the star made it known he had been seen as he mimed a drug reference. Pointing inside the cubicle he then alluded to taking cocaine before he headed inside. Reposting the video the fan wrote: 'Liam Gallagher knew he was being watched heading into the backstage toilets and of course he does this'. At the height of the band's Britpop career Liam was known for his party lifestyle fuelled by of drinking and drug taking. However the star has left his wild antics behind and now priorities his well being with his 'health trip' seeing him cutting back on booze and stop drug taking. He previously told The Sun: 'You've got to undo all the bad work you've done through f***ing getting off your head and all that. 'It's time to undo it all now and get back to reality. All that stuff that you thought was cool in the early days . . . it's time to get healthy.' 'As you get older, life is precious, do you know what I mean? I'm a pretty happy-go-lucky guy. I love waking up early in the morning.' Meanwhile it was also revealed Liam has been drinking apple cider vinegar on the Oasis tour after vowing to ditch the booze. Before the reunion gigs kicked off, Liam vowed to cut alcohol out his diet to keep his voice in check for the stage. After years of drinking heavily on tour in the nineties, Liam prefers a glass of the soft drink. Liam has previously spoke about his love for apple cider vinegar and honey and how it helps his voice. He said: 'I drink a lot of funky drinks. I have this apple cider vinegar, the one that everyone bangs on about. 'So I have vinegar, some honey and then I have some turmeric, some cayenne pepper, a squirt of lemon, hot water, stir it round and drink it. 'It's really good for when you get a hoarse voice. I've got a thyroid problem – Hashimoto's disease – so I can get a really hoarse voice.' In 2023 Liam revealed that he needed the joints replacing in his hip due to arthritis as a result of a longstanding thyroid problem. He then underwent a major hip operation. The lady was going, 'Oh, you might need a hip operation, a replacement.'' He said at the time he didn't want the operation because of the 'stigma'. 'I think I'd rather just be in pain. Which is ridiculous, obviously. I know that. Just get them fixed. But it's the stigma, saying you've had your hips replaced. What's next?' Taking to social media he penned: 'Morning Rastas so I had my Hip operation last wk all went well and RESPEK to all the doctors n nurses who looked after me Big shout out to the A team for getting us home safe n sound' He told MoJo magazine: 'When the weather's cold, my hips are like snap, crackle and pop. I need warmth. 'I can't sleep at night for the pain. Tossing and turning. So I'm on herbal sleeping tablets and they've saved my life. One of them, seven hours out, no pain, nothing. 'My new thing is Deep Heat. Caked myself in it on the knees and hips, the calves, then into the steam room for as long as I can handle it.' Liam, a keen jogger, was told by doctors to run less to help manage the condition. In the interview he also spoke about his psoriasis, saying he once met a fan who thought he had cocaine in his hair - but it was actually bits of skin from his itchy scalp. He said: 'I've got psoriasis, so I had obviously been scratching it during the day and there were little white bits and s**t. They were taking it out of my hair and putting it on their gums and putting it up their f***ing nose!' Taking to Twitter last February he said of having his hip operation: 'Morning Rastas so I had my Hip operation last wk [week] all went well and RESPEK [respect] to all the doctors n nurses who looked after me Big shout out to the A team for getting us home safe n sound. 'You know who you are and Florence guru I love and adore you Riverdance here I come LG x'.

Novo Nordisk expands lawsuits against weight-loss drug compounders

Aug 5 (Reuters) - Danish drugmaker Novo Nordisk ( opens new tab said on Tuesday it has filed 14 new lawsuits in the United States against the sale of unapproved versions of semaglutide, the main ingredient in its popular weight-loss and diabetes drugs, Wegovy and Ozempic. The new lawsuits target pharmacies and telehealth companies producing compounded versions of semaglutide "under the fake guise of personalization", Novo said, without naming the companies. Shares of major telehealth firm Hims & Hers (HIMS.N), opens new tab extended losses to fall nearly 13% in afternoon trade. It had earlier reported weaker-than-expected quarterly revenue. A Reuters search of legal filings found some cases filed by Novo in California dated Aug. 4 but none regarding San Francisco-based Hims. Hims was not immediately available for comment. Compounders copy brand-name medicines that are in short supply by combining, mixing or altering drug ingredients to meet demand. These companies were briefly allowed to produce hundreds of thousands of compounded doses of Novo's obesity and diabetes drugs when the Food and Drug Administration said they were in short supply. When the agency later banned the sale of these copies, Hims and Hers shifted to creating versions of semaglutide in personalized doses not accessible through the branded manufacturers. Novo's lawsuits allege that telehealth providers violate state corporate practice of medicine laws by improperly influencing doctors' decisions and steering patients toward knockoff compounded "semaglutide" under the guise of personalized medicine. In reality, these are knockoffs that have not been approved as safe and effective and are often made with illicit foreign active pharmaceutical ingredients (API), Novo said. It did not immediately respond to a Reuters query on which companies were being named in the lawsuit.

The ‘curl & scrunch' trick Princess Andre swears by for gorgeous long waves with zero heat damage

SHE may be a nepo baby who grew up in the spotlight, but Princess Andre is now paving her own way. Just last week, she was crowned Tatler's second best-dressed star in Britain. 4 4 And it's not just fashion where she's making waves - the daughter of Peter Andre and Katie Price is also a beauty icon, with fans clamouring for her hair secrets. Princess has become known for her stunning, long, naturally curly hair, and the secret to her gorgeous locks is a simple, heat-free trick she recently shared on TikTok. For anyone wanting to achieve beautiful, bouncy waves without using a curling iron, her "curl & scrunch" method is a game-changer. The 18-year-old posted a step-by-step tutorial for her 882.9k followers, and the video has since gone viral with 1.2 million views and 53.6k likes. The key to her routine isn't heat, but the right combination of products and a technique that enhances her natural curls. How to Get the Look The process starts with a good brush to ensure there are "absolutely no knots." Princess then sections her hair, clipping the top half out of the way to focus on the bottom. She makes sure each section is "soaked" with water before adding a "good amount" of curl cream. "I feel like this is a really important step," she explains, "but always brush away from your face. I just feel like this defines the curls so much more." Trailer for the upcoming series of The Princess Diaries starring Princess Andre The magic truly happens with her signature two-step method: finger curling and scrunching. She precisely finger curls her hair to make the curls "so defined," then scrunches her hair, listening for that "squishy noise" that tells her the product is working. After repeating this on all sections, she scrunches her hair with a towel and then flips her head forward to add mousse or gel for extra hold. Although she says she doesn't diffuse her hair until it's "fully dry," she does use a diffuser for a little bit before letting the rest air-dry. 4 The result is her signature head of gorgeous, bouncy waves—all done with minimal heat. Fans flocked to the comments to praise her look, with one writing: "You've always had beautiful hair. "Love this pretty girl." Another added: "Beautiful young woman. While a third simply commented: "Beautiful." Princess Andre has renewed her major beauty deal with Studio London for a second year. Last year, she was announced as the face of the brand's affordable cosmetics line and will continue to work with them for another 12 months. An insider revealed: 'Princess has been a huge hit with Superdrug and they couldn't wait to snap her up again. 'She has such wide appeal and has already shown just how much she can do for the brand.' Who is Princess Andre and what's her job? Princess Andre born June 29, 2007, is the daughter of Mysterious Girl singer Peter Andre and former glamour model Katie Price. The pair also welcomed a son while they were together, Junior, born on June 13, 2005. Katie and Peter then split in early 2009, with their divorce being finalised in October of the same year. Princess also has six half siblings, four from Katie and two from Peter. As of June 2024, Princess has an impressive 750,000 followers on her Instagram account, @officialprincess_andre. Ahead of her 16th birthday, in June 2023, Princess opened up about what she wants to do with her future during a Q&A with fans and followers.
