Murder investigation launched after female motorist killed on R300

A woman was shot in the neck and killed along the R300 on Saturday night in yet another brazen highway hit near the deadly N2 "Hell Run".
The 41-year-old woman had reportedly just finished changing her tyre when she was gunned down inside her car.
Police found her slumped behind the wheel and she was declared dead on the scene by paramedics.
Police spokesperson, Wesley Twigg, confirmed they are investigating a case of murder.
'The circumstances surrounding a shooting incident on Saturday evening at about 20:22pm, on the R300, where a 41-year-old female was shot and fatally wounded are under investigation.
'Police members attended the crime scene where they found the victim inside the vehicle with a gunshot wound to her neck.
'The victim was declared deceased on the scene by paramedics. The motive for the attack forms part of the police investigation.'
He added that no personal belongings were taken and that the suspects are still on the loose.
Meanwhile, Freedom Front Plus councillor Emre Uygun said the party is shocked that the incident happened so close to the notorious Hell Run.
'This horrific incident also follows closely on the heels of a similar case of attempted murder involving a female motorist that the party had recently highlighted in a press release this week.
'The Freedom Front Plus strongly condemns these brazen and violent attacks on female motorists, which demonstrates a clear disregard for human life.'

The party is demanding that the national, provincial and local government hold an emergency meeting to come up with a proper plan to tackle the growing violence on the N2 and R300.
The Cape Argus sister newspaper, Daily Voice previously reported on a couple who were ambushed on the N2 Hell Run while heading to Cape Town International Airport.
Uygun added: 'According to reports, Sanral's monitoring system recorded over 200 crime-related incidents on the N2 and R300 in Cape Town in 2023, including stone-throwing and robbery targeting motorists.
'It is alarming that the closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras on this stretch of road are non-functional, and visible policing is clearly inadequate.'
The party said Sanral, SAPS and metro police must take action, including fixing broken cameras to catch the suspects and keep motorists safe, especially near the airport.

Another vehicle attempted to force them off the road at the same time. Their calls to the police's emergency number, 10111, went unanswered.' Uygun confirmed the victims opened a case of attempted murder with police. According to SAPS spokesperson Capt FC van Wyk, Nyanga police have launched an attempted murder investigation into the incident on July 13 at about 4.15pm just before Borchards Quarry Road. 'According to reports, the complainant was on his way to Cape Town International Airport when his vehicle was struck by an object on the passenger side, hitting his wife. The lady was injured with glass in the face,' said Van Wyk. Uygun said the N2 'Hell Run' continues to be a hotspot for crime targeting motorists, with a lack of visible policing and non-functional surveillance systems putting lives at risk. 'According to reports, the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) monitoring system recorded more than 200 crime-related incidents on the N2 and R300 in Cape Town in 2023, including stone-throwing and robbery targeting motorists. 'The so-called 'Hell Run' section of the N2 near the airport is a known high-risk area. So it is alarming that the closed-circuit TV (CCTV) cameras on this stretch of road are non-functional and visible policing is clearly inadequate.' Uygun said a working CCTV system could serve as a deterrent and a critical tool in identifying and apprehending perpetrators. Asked about non-functional CCTV cameras in the area, Van Wyk said enquiries regarding camera infrastructure should be directed to the City of Cape Town. 'The FF Plus calls on Sanral, the SAPS and the metro police to implement comprehensive measures to ensure the safety of motorists, particularly on the N2 near the airport, to prevent such incidents,' said Uygun. He said integrated operations involving SAPS, the city's law enforcement, traffic and metro police are regularly conducted on the N2 corridor. However, the frequency and effectiveness of these operations are now being questioned as motorists continue to be attacked. The latest incident follows a previous case in 2024, when traffic services appealed to the public for information about a group of children caught on camera throwing stones at vehicles on the N1 near the Sable Road off-ramp. Jacobs was granted the bail on Monday by the Bellville Magistrate's Court, nearly a month after she was arrested for Imaad's kidnapping. The 41-year-old taxi driver stands accused of murdering traffic officer Walton van Rooyen in March 2020, and also faces charges of illegal possession of a 9mm pistol and 14 cartridges. De Lilly, his taxi assistant and two other men were arrested shortly after the shooting in Acre Road, Kensington, but the case was provisionally withdrawn just a month later. On Monday, family members of Van Rooyen and a group of traffic cops gathered outside before court proceedings to oppose bail after the court previously heard that the State wasn't planning to oppose De Lilly's release, despite him facing a Schedule 6 charge. However, things took a turn when the court heard that the State has now changed its tune and will in fact oppose bail, a move that shocked De Lilly's family. His lawyer told the court he has witnesses lined up to testify at the next appearance, and the matter was postponed to August 11. Image: Supplied His aunt told the Cape Argus sister publication, the Daily Voice that when De Lilly was convicted of rape and robbery, he was a minor, and while he got gang tattoos in prison, he was never actually part of a gang. 'He never wanted that life, but he didn't have a choice,' she said. 'If justice is fair we just hope they give him a fair chance to get bail. We feel for [Van Rooyen's] family, but Craig also has a family and he is a different person.' Mayco member for Safety and Security JP Smith said justice has been a long time coming. 'Just over a week ago we were informed that the suspect was re-arrested and many of us felt relieved. It has been a five-year wait for justice,' said Smith. 'I visited Walton's family at the time of his death and I can recall the heartache in the eyes of his relatives and friends. His death had a profound impact on the entire directorate. 'We believe that the State would not have recharged the suspect haphazardly and we have faith that they have applied their minds when assessing the docket.
