India aims to import about 10% of its cooking gas from US from 2026, say sources

Business Recorder15 hours ago
NEW DELHI: India plans to source about 10% of its cooking gas imports from the U.S. beginning in 2026 as part of a broader effort to boost energy purchases to narrow its trade gap with Washington, four industry refining sources familiar with the matter said.
The world's third biggest oil importer and consumer relies heavily on Middle Eastern producers of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), with more than 90% of its roughly 20.5 million metric tons of imports in 2024 coming from the region.
LPG is a mix of propane and butane used for cooking fuel and is mainly imported by state retailers Indian Oil Corp, Bharat Petroleum Corp and Hindustan Petroleum Corp and sold at a subsidised price to households.
India had rarely bought U.S. LPG in the past due to higher freight costs, but state retailers began buying U.S. LPG in May after China imposed retaliatory import tariffs on U.S. propane.
India plans to eliminate import tax on U.S. propane and butane used for making LPG, sources previously told Reuters.
India has pledged to increase U.S. energy purchases by $10 billion to $25 billion in the near future and the two nations in February agreed to target $500 billion in bilateral trade by 2030.
India ready for trade deals but not to meet deadlines, minister says
India's import of U.S. oil has more than doubled this year, data obtained from sources showed.
'We are looking to the U.S. as a reliable alternative source of both crude and LPG. We need to diversify our sources of LPG,' said one of the sources who declined to be named because he was not authorised to speak to media.
India has been diversifying its crude oil suppliers to reduce geopolitical risks and support its growing refining capacity. However, its LPG suppliers remain concentrated in the Middle East, typically purchased on a free-on-board (FOB) basis.
Chinese import tariffs on U.S. propane, currently at 10%, have opened up arbitrage opportunities for Indian buyers, further incentivising a shift toward U.S. cargoes, a second source said.
'We would prefer to import from the U.S. on a delivered basis to mitigate freight risks — similar to how we already buy U.S. crude,' he said.
Indian state refiners are seeing annual LPG demand growth of about 5% to 6%, with total imports projected to rise to 22 million tonnes to 23 million tonnes by 2026, two of the sources said.
India's oil ministry and the three state fuel retailers did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Pricing will be key to determining the exact volume of U.S. LPG imports, a third industry source said.
The International Energy Agency expects India's LPG demand to grow at an average of 2.5% between 2024 and 2030, reaching 1.2 million barrels per day, or roughly 37.7 million tonnes.

Unsafe buildings: ABAD underscores need for comprehensive reforms

KARACHI: The Association of Builders and Developers (ABAD) has demanded for immediate legislative action and comprehensive reforms to address the growing crisis of unsafe buildings in Karachi following the recent tragic collapse of a five-story building in Lyari. Speaking at a press conference held at ABAD House, Muhammad Hassan Bakhshi said that the competent authority should take immediate legislative action and comprehensive reforms to address the growing crisis of unsafe buildings in Karachi to avert tragic incidents of building collapse in the city. Bakhshi along with Senior Vice Chairman Syed Afzal Hameed, Vice Chairman Tariq Aziz, and other said that the city has witnessed 12 such incidents resulting in 150 deaths over the past few years, attributing these tragedies to 'corruption, greed, and negligence.' The ABAD chairman also criticised the Sindh government for failing to enact proper legislation regarding dilapidated buildings, adding that a disturbing pattern where property owners deliberately wait for buildings to collapse to claim plot ownership was observed. He requested the Sindh government to find solutions for approximately 700 identified unsafe buildings across the city. 'These buildings should be inspected with the assistance of National Engineering Services Pakistan (NESPAK),' he urged. ABAD chairman also pointed out the widespread illegal construction in the city, where additional floors are being added to existing structures without proper authorisation. 'These constructions put public life and property at risk,' he said and added that such buildings typically have a lifespan of only 15-20 years. Bakhshi alleged that local administration, police, and relevant authorities are complicit in these illegal activities, while vulnerable populations are forced to live in these dangerous structures. He urged the government to increase compensation amount from Rs 1 million to Rs 2.5 million. The chairman ABAD further revealed that over the past seven years, authorities like MDA and LDA have collected over Rs 25 billion rupees for residential schemes that have never been delivered to the public. Bakhshi proposed that ABAD could construct dilapidated buildings within 700 days and is prepared to build 100,000 houses if requested by the Sindh government, suggesting the government to collaborate with Chinese companies in this regards. X blasts India ‘censorship' order on thousands of accounts

NEW DELHI: Social media platform X said Tuesday it was 'deeply concerned' after the Indian government ordered it last week to block 2,355 accounts, including two Reuters news agency accounts. Many of the blocked accounts were restored hours later, with New Delhi specifically denying its role in the takedown. India, the world's biggest democracy, regularly ranks among the top five countries for the number of requests made by a government to remove social media content. 'On July 3, 2025, the Indian government ordered X to block 2,355 accounts in India, including international news outlets like @Reuters and @ReutersWorld,' X's Global Government Affairs team said in a statement, shared on its platform. It said that India's Ministry of Electronics 'demanded immediate action — within one hour — without providing justification, and required the accounts to remain blocked' until further notice. The accounts were taken offline late on Saturday, but had resumed operations by Sunday. 'Non-compliance risked criminal liability,' said X, the platform owned by Tesla boss Elon Musk and formerly known as Twitter. 'After public outcry, the government requested X to unblock @Reuters and @ReutersWorld,' it added. 'We are deeply concerned about ongoing press censorship in India due to these blocking orders.' Rights groups say freedom of expression and free press is under threat in India since Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi took office in 2014. New Delhi has regularly imposed blanket internet shutdowns during periods of unrest. India in April launched a sweeping crackdown on social media, banning more than a dozen Pakistani YouTube channels for allegedly spreading 'provocative' content following an attack in Kashmir. Many of those of have been restored. New Delhi has also imposed intermittent internet outages in the northeastern state of Manipur since 2023 in the wake of ethnic violence.
