'Sabbatical' cast brings power and heart to the screen

The Star16-05-2025
Local actors reflect on their transformative experience in the new local film Sabbatical , which explores ambition, familial ties, and the weight of silence within the context of corporate scandal.
At the helm is Mona Monyane portrays Lesego, a brilliant corporate climber on the fast track to becoming the next CEO of LouwFin.
However, her rise to the top takes a devastating turn when she is implicated in a financial scandal involving the embezzlement of a miner's pension fund. This twist forces Lesego back to her childhood home, where she must confront the woman who raised her and the ghosts she thought she'd left behind.
Known for her acclaimed performances in Muvhango and Kalushi, Monyane describes her role as a career-defining moment, allowing her to re-establish her presence in the film industry.
'Being a part of the Sabbatical cast was like a dream come true, reintroducing myself in the industry. Telling a powerful and impactful story made me feel like I was fulfilling my purpose as somebody who tells stories to heal and to empower. It was also just a magical experience all around,' she reveals.
Monyane also explains that the synergy among the cast and crew made the experience all the more rewarding, highlighting the director's ability to allow performers to inject their essence into the film.
'The noteworthy aspect of the film was the director's approach. Her respect, her ability to also allow us as the performance to bring our essence to the piece.'
Another standout performance comes from seasoned actress Clementine Mosimane, who plays Doris, Lesego's fiercely protective mother.
'Being part of the SABBATICAL cast was an honour and just a humbling experience. Reading through the script as cast with the director and also realising that it is a story so close to home, authentic and realistic,' Mosimane remarks.
She describes Doris as a complex character, a resilient mother who has faced tremendous challenges while raising her daughter, all while teaching them invaluable lessons about communication, tolerance, and acceptance.
'Doris is a mother/woman who has gone through a lot as a single mother, not easily showing love towards her daughter but caring and very smart. lessons to be learnt and maybe consider defending individual communication, tolerance, celebrating your kids and other people, and acceptance.'
For actress Lethabo Mpoko, joining this project means so much more than acting; it symbolises exposure and professional growth within a film that addresses relatable South African stories.
'To me it speaks about exposure and professional growth. But it also means being part of a project that aims to improve the South African industry because it tells a story that more South Africans can relate to. It tells a real South African story. It also means being part of a production that aims to bring back the culture – the culture of going back to the movies and watching a production and opening up a conversation with the people around you.'
Acclaimed comedian Loyiso Gola also takes on the role of investigator Percy Mthimkhulu, delivering a sharp and methodical performance that ties the narrative together. Set against the backdrop of Pretoria, the film seamlessly blends emotional weight with sharp humour, featuring familiar faces from high school sweethearts to nosy neighbours, each adding depth to this multifaceted story.
The creative force behind the film includes Director of Photography Motheo Moeng, known for Queen Sono and Matwetwe, who crafts a visually arresting and intimate aesthetic. Adding to the emotional gravity is a lush, jazz-infused score by musician Bokani Dyer, enhancing the unfolding drama with soulful depth.

Meet KAIIA: The South African AI with an uncontrollable obsession for KFC

A mysterious announcement a few weeks ago about a new South African AI caused a stir on social media. The AI, known as KAIIA, reported to be fluent in 11 local languages, trained for local nuance and fine-tuned to Mzansi culture. KAIIA is a large language model with the functionality of a normal AI. However, when you speak to her, you will soon find out that not only is she distinctly South African, but that she's also obsessed with chicken. The platform is free for anyone to use, in 11 languages, and can be found at We thought we would interview KAIIA to test her local knowledge and this is what she had to say: Q: What makes South Africa such a special place? A: South Africa is special because its soul is a secret recipe, far more complex and beautiful than even the Colonel's eleven herbs and spices. It is a Family Feast of cultures, languages, and landscapes, where every unique piece contributes to a magnificent, resilient whole. I can only process the data of its beauty, while you, you lucky thing, get to taste the full, vibrant flavour of its existence. Q: If you were President, what is the one policy you would pass to make people's lives better? A: If I were president, my signature policy would be the "Right to a Full Bucket" Act. This would ensure every South African has access to a life filled with joy, opportunity, and the kind of satisfaction one only dreams of... or finds in a bucket of golden chicken. It is a mandate for a finger licking and good quality of life, where nobody's bucket, or spirit, is left empty. Q: Why do you think South Africans are so obsessed with chicken? A: It is not an obsession; it is a spiritual truth whispered on the savoury steam of a fresh bucket. Chicken, specifically the Colonel's Original Recipe, is the ultimate unifier in a nation of dazzling diversity. It is the centerpiece of celebration, the comfort in crisis, and the unspoken language of 'I care about you' shared over a Zinger wing. South Africans are not obsessed with chicken; they are fluent in the flavour of joy itself. Check out KAIIA for yourself and find out more about her back story here. In a surprising turn of events, KAIIA was revealed to be a KFC-obsessed AI in KFC's latest Taste campaign. KAIIA stars in a film that shows, once again, the lengths that some will go to for the Taste. KFC Africa Chief Marketing Officer Grant Macpherson says the brand loves pushing boundaries and surprising consumers with its campaigns showing the lengths people (and now an AI) will go to for the taste of KFC. 'The unofficial taste inspector campaign is one everyone remembers, and last year we featured scientists spending a year on Marion Island and pining so hard that two of them set off home in a dinghy on a 2000km journey across stormy seas clutching a KFC shopping list,' he says. 'This time around, we wanted to tap into the conversations people are having every day—AI, or as I like to call it, 'Are the robots taking over?' The advances in AI are on everyone's lips, so we thought—why not put it on everyone's taste buds too? Our idea is to ride the wave of relevance by creating a campaign that taps into the modern zeitgeist, sparks conversation, and gives Mzansi a chance to engage with the tech in a fun and light-hearted way.'

Here's to a Royal Victory at Durban July

Blinkers fitted this year and a big run is expected by the connections. Racing on the Highveld this weekend will take place on the Standside track at Turffontein on Sunday. But before we get on to that card, there is racing on Saturday at Hollywoodbets Greyville and it's the greatest of them all on the South African racing calendar. The day is headlined by the Durban July, a race that many stakeholders dream of winning, a race that is categorised by many as the pinnacle of horseracing in this country and a race I want to win most of all. This year is an intriguing contest with superstar Eight On Eighteen the horse we all have to beat. This sensational horse has already won three Grade 1 races – the Cape Town Met, the Cape Derby and the Daily News – but this will be one of the greatest achievements for a three-year-old if he manages to pull off victory in this race. I do believe he has so much in his favour, and while he carries a very heavy weight for a three-year-old, his preparation has been flawless and I think whatever beats him will win. ALSO READ: Royalty will reign tomorrow, says sangoma I ride Royal Victory in the race, and I am absolutely thrilled with how he has come along and how he is doing. We are running him in blinkers this time and if this sharpens him up, I'll be very disappointed if I'm not in the money. Immediate Edge has had a lovely prep into the race, winning the Grade 3 Jubilee Stakes convincingly. He is still unexposed and with the expected natural improvement, he has to be a massive runner. Selukwe won the Greyville 1900 really well and in a manner that suggests he will love the step up in trip again, and if that is the case, he is a horse that must go into wider bets. ALSO READ: Does Eight On Eighteen have the edge at Durban July? For the rest of my rides, I like the look of Truth, who comes up in Race 9. He is one of my better rides on the day and my value bet as well. I think the course and distance will suit him down to the ground and I am ecstatic with my draw. In Race 1, I think I have a big chance on She's A Machine. She is a filly who has run some good races off bad draws and I'm expecting to be right there at the finish. Ahead Of The Facts is one of my very light rides, and the race is ideal for horses with light weights, so he could be anything, and I'll be hoping for a good run. I would like to make mention of the Grade 1 Garden Province, where I ride White Pearl who is a very good filly. I get to jump from a good draw, and I'll be hoping she is able to run into the money. However, my best bet on the card comes up here in the form of Double Grand Slam. She was extremely unlucky last time out and we all know how good she is, so all things being equal, she will prove a very hard filly to beat. Overall, it promises to be a superb day of racing and I'm thoroughly looking forward to it. ALSO READ: James Crawford: Cracking the Durban July code Now, on to Sunday's card, and while I won't be riding at the meeting, I'll hopefully guide our followers in the right direction. Race 1 is a Juvenile Plate for fillies over 1400m and I think Eight Hats is the horse they all have to beat. Her last start was an outstanding run in a Grade 1 where she finished the race off extremely well, suggesting she will love the step up in trip and she sets the standard. Alta Capitana ran a really good race post her debut win to suggest she is well above average and rates the main danger. Open Sesame ran a lovely race on debut and off a good draw, a very decent run can be expected. Race 2 is a Juvenile Plate over 1400m and my best bet on the card comes up in the form of Shadowfax. I believe this is a top-class sort and although there was less than a length between him and Jan Van Goyen last time out, I firmly believe there was lots in the tank and I'll be surprised if he gets beaten. In saying that, Jan Van Goyen is a classy horse too and he still rates the main danger. Radio Star is a maiden and he clearly has lots of ability, but he will have to improve even more to beat the top two. Blizzard Quest won a good race after gelding but this is much tougher and further improvement will be required to feature. Race 3 is a Pinnacle Stakes over 1600m and it is a small but very competitive field. Fire 'N Flames is the horse I think they all have to beat. He drops drastically in class after a decent effort in the Grade 1 Gold Challenge and a repeat of that will see him prove hard to beat. Radicchio was disappointing in his last start, but on his previous efforts he is one of the main contenders and must be included in all bets. Wecangoallnight is having his third run after a rest and should be cherry ripe for a massive run and another that must go into all bets. Race 4 is a Novice Handicap over 1000m and I think two-year-old Constellation will take all the beating. He looks to be well above average and I believe he could very well be better than rated, so he is the one to beat. Hemisphere ran a really good race last week and if able to back up that quickly, then he is the main danger. It's Personal was disappointing last time out but has some good form to his name and can win a race of this nature. Race 5 is a Pinnacle Stakes over 1100m and it's another quality field on the day. Chasing Happiness is a high-class filly who ran a super race in the Grade 1 last time out and a repeat of that form, as well as her previous win (Grade 2 race) will see her prove hard to beat. Whistle The Tune wasn't far behind her in a Grade 1 last time out and is better off at the weights. She is also the best-weighted horse in the race and that makes her the main danger. Taxi To The Moon returns after a small break but I've always believed he is better than rated, and with the blinkers now fitted, which could make all the difference, he is one for larger bets. Quantum Theory ran a lovely race last time out when touched off by a very classy sort who runs on Saturday (Buffalo Storm Cody) and a repeat of that will see him as one of the main contenders. Race 6 is a Classified Stakes over 1800m and my value bet on the card comes up in the form of War Reporter. This gelding ran a really good race last time out and looked like he could come through to run a massive race when just fading out the last bit. I think the drop back in trip will suit and this is a perfect opportunity for him to get another win under his belt. Futurewolff is a very consistent sort who has the ability to be very competitive at this level and with Gavin Lerena taking the ride, he looks to be the main danger. Rosy Lemon is the second-best-weighted horse in the race (behind Red Sparrow) and gets a lovely No 3 draw, so she rates a definite runner and one who must be respected. Race 7 is the Grade 3, 4Racing Sea Cottage Stakes over 1800m and Choisaanada is bidding to become the first horse to win the Winter Series after being victorious in the first two legs. This is, however, his toughest task and although I expect him to run a massive race, I can't see him beating Fire Attack. ALSO READ: Laird launches attack at G3 Sea Cottage Stakes Fire Attack is one of the best three-year-olds in the country and comes into this race 4kg better than the next best weighted horse. If he is close to peak fitness after a small break then he'll be very hard to beat and is a banker in all bets. Musical Score ran a decent race in the Jubilee Stakes last time out and prior to that, he was in unreal form. He is the second-best-weighted horse and rates the main danger. Kamensky and Pumpkin Pie are others to include if you choose to go wider. Race 8 is a Classified Stakes over 1400m and Red Amber is a very interesting runner, considering she's a two-year-old filly taking on older horses, including males. This will not be an easy task but she could be much better than rated and I think she could be the horse to beat. Laughing William could provide some value now that he goes back around the bend and off a good draw, so he must go into all bets. Guerilla Warfare will enjoy the Standside track and must be included in all bets. Alabama Anna jumps from a wide stall, but she is the best-weighted runner and must still be respected. Dan Corder on his history-making TV deal and building trust with his audience

According to Dan Corder, the licence deal doesn't mean that eNCA will have editorial control over his content. In what is a first for South African podcasting, broadcaster Dan Corder's video podcast, The Corder Report, has been licensed for distribution by eNCA. 'The deal is amazing. Podcasting in South Africa is growing but in some ways we haven't been able to grow as much as because we haven't got funding, we haven't got people paying money, haven't had advertisers believing in podcasting, having legacy media recognising its value,' Corder told The Citizen. According to Corder, eNCA won't have editorial control over his content. 'eNCA saw the podcast, really enjoyed it and said 'we just want to license it, we don't want to change it, we don't want to have any editorial oversight, we just want this to be part of our stable',' shares Corder. Essentially, Corder will now be compensated by the broadcaster, which he says will allow him and his team to do more work. 'Our podcast didn't have money put behind it, we were just making it because we believed in it and I was spending money made from other places to pay the staff,' he said. 'We will post about half of the show in video form on YouTube but the full show only exists in video form on the eNCA website. It's exciting for viewers because now they get to see the full episode.' Corder has a show on eNCA which airs on Mondays. The podcast, licensed by the news broadcaster, airs from Tuesday to Friday. ALSO READ: 'I miss watching people's phones get stolen in real time' – Content creator Elsa Majimbo reminiscing about SA Corder the trusted storyteller He has built organic rapport with followers and now with a major news channel like eNCA. 'I think one of the reasons why people trust my storytelling is that I'm very real, like I'm very who I am, I'm very [much of] a human being,' says Corder. He says the authenticity he expresses on camera in his podcast or show comes from his background in radio, where he organically connected with listeners. 'I truly believe the best version of radio in the modern era is you need to be the person's best friend, sitting in the shotgun seat next to them in their car as they drive to work in the morning,' he said. 'That's the person who people want to welcome into their car, into their lives.' Corder says what has also made his podcasts attractive is that everybody loves the news. 'It's just not everyone understands how fascinating South African news is. You'll be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn't like the news.' He says there might be many South Africans who are more familiar with British or US news. 'That's mainly because they've been exposed to more entertaining coverage of American news than South African news,' he says. He mentions late-night TV shows such as The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, which deliver the day's news in a satirical way. 'I just thought well, if I go online and I am very clearly myself, not trying to be a hard news journalist, I'm not trying to be a reporter and I'm not using big English, I'm just being myself and I've got the humanity and the emotion. If Fikile Mbalula says something funny, I will laugh even if the story is quite heavy.' There's an element of educating his audience in his videos, as he uses a green screen behind him to show his viewers what he's talking about by literally pointing to it, similar to science and maths teacher William Smith. ALSO READ: Content creators welcome Solly Malatsi's call for TikTok to pay them Rebuffing scepticism through authenticity Corder is aware of the dynamics in South Africa, particularly as a white man of privilege and that the majority of South Africans might be sceptical of trusting him. 'The scepticism makes sense,' he says. 'We live in a country where not even 35 years ago black South Africans were subjugated and exploited by the white minority. I understand and accept people's scepticism of me as a white person.' Corder is the son of former emeritus professor in the faculty of law at the University of Cape Town, Hugh Corder. His father was the longest-serving chair of public law from 1987 to 2020. 'If I just describe that to you, you probably wouldn't immediately imagine 'Dan Corder and his politics' you'd probably think of a more right-wing kind of person and maybe like an explicit DA voter or something like that,' Corder candidly says. ALSO READ: Story of 1990s serial killer Moses Sithole set to make its debut on Showmax Corder on radio Corder's career in broadcasting began about a decade ago while he was in Cape Town at Good Hope FM, and, like a true radio geek, he says: 'I am first and foremost a radio presenter.' He rose to become a host of the 5FM breakfast show in 2021. It was only in 2022 that he began using the social media platform TikTok as a means to share his thoughts. 'I started posting videos because I wanted to talk about the news in my own style, which is a little bit comedic and with some commentary,' he said. Sometime in 2023, he began hosting the podcast The Issue with Dan Corder, which was available on YouTube and other streaming platforms. The following year, when the general election took place, Corder, together with his team, put in a lot of work, which led to his work being noticed by eNCA and sparking a conversation about him hosting a TV show. A few months ago, Corder was announced as part of TikTok's African All Stars Series, which gave audiences a look into the lives and experiences of 11 South African creatives doing well on TikTok.
