Prayagraj: A state-of-the-art automatic train washing plant is nearing completion at Subedarganj railway station in Prayagraj. It is expected to revolutionise the process of train cleaning with its emphasis on speed and water conservation.
According to officials, the trial run of the plant is scheduled for August 15, and full operations are likely to commence in September. Once operational, the system will not only speed up the washing process but also save up to 30-40% water per train compared to traditional methods. The new facility is equipped with high-pressure water jets, specially designed brushes, and eco-friendly detergents. What sets the plant apart is its use of advanced sensors and automated control systems that scan each train's length, width, and structure as it enters the washing bay.
According to railway officials, based on the train's dimensions, the system automatically adjusts washing parameters, ensuring effective cleaning without manual intervention.
The cleaning cycle, which includes high-pressure jet cleaning, thorough scrubbing via rotating brushes, and detergent-assisted deep cleansing, completes in just 10 to 15 minutes. Finally, a drying system removes excess water, leaving the train spotless and ready for service, they added.

Currently, train washing at Prayagraj involves six to eight manual workers and consumes between 5,000 to 6,000 litres of water per train. The new automatic plant will cut this requirement significantly, using only 3,000 to 4,000 litres per train.
In addition to efficient cleaning, the plant includes an integrated drainage and filtration system. Wastewater is collected and filtered through multiple stages, including sand filters, carbon filters, and membrane filters, which remove oil, grime, and detergent residue.
This treated water then undergoes a disinfection process, making it suitable for reuse and aligning the plant with railways' sustainability goals.
The necessary machinery for the Subedarganj plant is already installed, with only water connection work remaining. Shashikant Tripathi, Chief Public Relations Officer of North Central Railway (NCR), confirmed that the trial phase in August will lead to full-scale operations by September.
Currently, approximately 100,000 to 120,000 litres of water are used daily to clean 20 trains at Prayagraj. Once the automatic plant is operational, this figure is expected to drop to 40,000 to 60,000 litres per day. This transition will result in a daily water saving of around 50,000 to 60,000 litres — translating to millions of litres saved annually.

‘GAY' code for Gaya airport can't be altered: Aviation min

1 2 Gaya: Virtually ruling out the demand to change the three-letter code for Gaya International Airport from 'GAY' to a more neutral alternative, minister of state for civil aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, informed the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday that little can be done once a code is assigned by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Reacting to a BJP member's request to change the code, the minister said such codes are not generally altered unless they pose a risk to aviation safety. "Once the code is issued, it is not usually changed and any exception to it can only be made if the code offers any threat to air safety," he said. In a written reply, the minister said the methodology for assigning airport codes typically involves using the first three letters of the airport's location name. Hence, 'GAY' was allotted to Gaya. The code has been in use since Sept 30, 2011, when the first regular commercial Air India flight began operating on the Gaya-Varanasi-Delhi route. Currently, along with domestic airlines, international flights from cities such as Yangon (formerly Rangoon), Bangkok and Thimphu operate FROM Gaya airport during the tourist season, which runs from Oct to March. Several chartered flights from countries like Japan and South Korea also use the airport. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now All these flights list 'GAY' as the code for Gaya. Starting next month, Air India is scheduled to resume operations on the Gaya-Delhi route. Commenting on the etymology of the name "Gaya", P C Roy, a scholar of ancient Indian and Asian studies, said it originated from 'Gyan' (enlightenment), in reference to Buddha's spiritual awakening. Over time, the pronunciation is thought to have evolved into 'Gaya'. While the airport code is based on geographic logic, the overlap with this usage has led to some unease. Gaya-based fiction writer Sanjay Sahay said, "I always felt embarrassed while booking air tickets for my hometown."

Holiday loans overtake home makeovers as top driver of personal borrowing

Mumbai: India's appetite for credit-fuelled leisure is growing—and it is showing up in both loan books and foreign-exchange data. A new report from Paisabazaar, based on a survey of over 5,700 respondents in 97 cities, finds that holidays have overtaken home renovations and medical needs as the leading reason for taking personal loans. In the first half of 2025, 27% of borrowers took a loan to fund a vacation, up from 21% two years earlier. That puts travel ahead of home improvements (24%), credit card repayments (11%), medical expenses (9.6%), education (6.1%) and weddings (5.4%). According to Santosh Agarwal, the firm's chief executive, the figures reflect a growing willingness to use credit for lifestyle goals. The shift is part of a broader surge in travel. Govt data show that more than 3 crore Indians travelled abroad in FY24, with numbers climbing further in FY25. On spending, the Reserve Bank of India's data under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme indicate that Indians spent about $16.96 billion on foreign travel in FY25—accounting for 57–60% of all outward remittances during the year. Millennials remain the largest cohort of holiday-loan borrowers, making up nearly half the total. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This new air conditioner cools down a room in just seconds News of the Discovery Undo But the fastest growth is among Generation Z: their share has more than doubled since 2023, to 29%. The report attributes this to a 'new-age' consumer base—digitally adept, aspirational, and willing to spread the cost of leisure. Demand is also shifting away from India's biggest cities. Tier-2 and Tier-3 centres accounted for 71% of applications in early 2025, up from 68% in 2023. Borrowers in Lucknow, Surat, Jaipur, Patna and Durgapur are driving the change. In contrast, Tier-1 cities made up 29% of the market, with Delhi and Hyderabad residents responsible for more than half that share, followed by Mumbai (15%) and Bangalore (14%). The sums borrowed are modest. Three in ten applicants took between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 3 lakh, while 20% opted for Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh and 19% for Rs 3 lakh to Rs 5 lakh. Many prefer smaller loans that can be repaid quickly. Private sector employees dominate the pool, at 65%, followed by business owners (17%), self-employed professionals (12%) and government staff (6%). Borrowers' destinations vary. In foreign travel, South-East Asia leads, attracting 44% of respondents, ahead of the Middle East (32%) and the USA and UK (around 20% each). Within India, Goa tops the list, followed by Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. Loan demand peaks in January and in May–June, which together account for 60% of borrowings. For a growing number of Indians, a holiday now comes with an EMI—and often a boarding pass. Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays .
