Telangana objects to AP's plan to draw Polavaram dead storage water; calls it unauthorised
HYDERABAD: The Telangana government has raised strong objections against the Andhra Pradesh government's reported plans to construct a new Lift Irrigation Scheme (LIS) drawing water from the dead storage of the Polavaram Irrigation Project.
The Telangana government has called on the Godavari River Management Board (GRMB) to take immediate action as mandated under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act (APRA), 2014.
On Saturday, Engineer-in-Chief (General) G Anil Kumar wrote a letter — a copy of which was accessed by TNIE — addressed to the Polavaram Project Authority (PPA) and the GRMB to prevent the proposal from moving forward.
This objection comes in the wake of a news report published in a vernacular daily on May 21, which stated that the Andhra Pradesh government plans to lift water from a 35-metre level in the dead storage of the Polavaram reservoir during the current financial year. The report cited G.O. RT No. 134, issued on April 19, 2021, as the basis for the plan.

'It is a matter of great pride that the former prime minister, Bharat Ratna awardee, and architect of economic reforms was born in our state,' Vikramarka said. Speaking to TNIE, PV Narasimha Rao's grandson and senior BJP leader N V Subhash said that his grandfather was a true statesman. He said that although the Congress wanted to reduce his grandfather to the level of a state leader, Prime Minister Modi honoured him with the Bharat Ratna. He said that his grandfather never craved for any political identity, and proved that a person from the middle class could also become chief minister and prime minister in this country.

NEW DELHI: Over the past 18 months, security forces have achieved significant success in anti-Naxal operations in Chhattisgarh, neutralising 435 Maoists, including a record 48 women operatives, officials said on Saturday. According to official data accessed by TNIE, women now account for approximately 10% of the total Maoists killed between 2024 and June 20 2025, the highest number of female Naxal casualties recorded in any such period since 2001. The sharp increase in neutralisation of Maoist operatives 198 in 2025 alone marks a significant blow to Left Wing Extremism (LWE) in the region.
