New on Netflix August 2-8: only four new shows and movies hit Netflix this week but one is huge
It happens to the best of us: most weeks Netflix has such a long list of new releases that I can only cover a fraction in this weekly round-up, but now and then, there's barely enough to populate a list.
Between Saturday, August 2 and Friday, August 8, only four new releases are joining Netflix's library, so my usual list is going to be a little shorter than usual. I only include brand-new Netflix Originals, not third-party titles added to the service, as these programmes are available worldwide.
Sometimes the Netflix Originals I include are worthy of our lists of the best Netflix shows and best Netflix movies, and one of the new releases this week is a hugely-anticipated sequel series, so there's definitely going to be something to watch.
So let's find you something worth watching on Netflix this week...
Beyond the Bar
Starting the week off (on a Saturday, which is rare for Netflix) is the new Korean drama series Beyond the Bar. This seems to have a strange release schedule which mirrors its Korean release: an episode every Saturday and Sunday for several weeks.
Beyond the Bar is set in Korea's legal word, and it's about a young rookie lawyer who starts to work for a big law firm. He finds his strong sense of justice challenged by the intricacies and moral gray areas of the work he has to do.
Premieres on Saturday, August 2
SEC Football: Any Given Saturday
Netflix subscribers are no stranger to sports documentary series, with a new one landing every other week, and this time around there's SEC Football: Any Given Saturday which releases on Tuesday, August 5.
This series follows college footballers in the South Eastern Conference (hence, SEC) over the course of their 2024 season. You'll get to see players on the pitch and relaxing between games behind-the-scenes, to see what it's like being a college football player.

Wednesday season 2
The smash-hit TV show returns when Wednesday season 2 releases; the first four episodes release on Thursday, August 6 and the last four on Thursday, September 3.
This Addams Family prequel follows young Wednesday Addams as she attends the Nevermore Academy and season 2 sees her attend another year of school. She also has to solve a mystery along the way. A long list of new faces join her along the way, with many recognizable celebrity actors joining the cast.

Stolen: Heist of the Century
The second Netflix documentary this year about a jewel theft, Stolen: Heist of the Century is a doc movie about a well-known noughties crime that releases on Friday, August 8.
Stolen: Heist of the Century looks at a 2003 robbery in Antwerp which saw hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of diamonds stolen in a surprisingly capable heist. No-one's ever been sure how the crime was actually committed but according to Netflix, that's finally going to change with the movie revealing it for the first time. As you can imagine, not a single diamond was ever recovered from the heist.

‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners' Star Lucy Finally Comes to ‘Guilty Gear Strive'
Fans of the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime have been looking forward to seeing Lucy cut it up in Guilty Gear Strive as a DLC character for a while now. During this weekend's EVO tournament, Arc System Works finally pulled back the curtain on how everyone's favorite living Edgerunner fits into its fighting game. Lucy's appearance here looks to be justified through her mind being hacked and transferred to the Guilty Gear universe. Still dealing with the events of Edgerunners that left her old crew dead, she's determined to figure out why she's here and how to get back home. Until she finds those answers, she's got some tricks to hold her own against Sol Badguy and the rest of the Strive roster. Gameplay-wise, her she's got her wrist whips, and her hacking prowess lets her disable her enemy's powers while boosting her own, which is a neat way to adapt her style for fighting game purposes. For the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners fans, playing as Lucy in competitive or the story mode looks to feature some callbacks to the show. She's the first guest character to grace Guilty Gear Strive (and the series overall, looks like) and funnily enough, its second consecutive anime addition. Before her, Arc System Works added Unika from the game's anime series Dual Riders to the roster this past May. Lucy enters Guilty Gear Strive on August 21, and we'll wait to see if she graces Cyberpunk: Edgerunners II with her presence when that series hits Netflix in the near future. Want more io9 news? No Season 3 for 'FUBAR' on Netflix

Deadline, and The Hollywood Reporter reported the news Friday. True Lies and Terminator icon Schwarzenegger played CIA operative Luke Brunner on the show. Season 2, which premiered in June, saw Luke facing his past and trying to catch the super-villain Greta Nelso (Carrie-Anne Moss). The cast also included Fabiana Udenio, Monica Barbaro, Milan Carter, Fortune Feimster, Travis Van Winkle, Andy Buckley and Jay Baruchel. Important MCU Movie Is Missing From Disney Plus
A wide range of Marvel Cinematic Universe properties are currently available to stream on Disney Plus. In fact, just about every major MCU movie and show is available to stream on the platform between Disney's ownership, their acquisition of 20th Century Fox, and their licensing deal with Sony. Unfortunately, there's one important MCU movie still missing from Disney Plus in the meantime. With all of their deals and acquisitions in place, some of the rights issues surrounding certain films can be tricky, and that means a few titles have the tendency to bounce back and forth between streaming services. This happens to be the case with one MCU movie that fans would absolutely love to have on Disney Plus. Unfortunately, it just isn't available – though that could change in the future. Interestingly, it is available to stream elsewhere, thanks to the complicated rights issues behind the film. While it's unclear when or if it could appear on Disney Plus, it does seem likely that everything will be sorted out with the mere passage of time. This film, of course, is none other than Spider-Man: No Way Home . The 2021 Spider-Man sequel was released just prior to a deal made between Disney Plus and Sony Pictures which would make Disney Plus the home for Sony's Spider-Man movies. Unfortunately, the deal only covers films released in 2022, which means Spider-Man: No Way Home just barely missed the cutoff by being released in December 2021. Sony also has deals in place with Netflix which can complicate things further. As for now, the formula seems to be that a Spider-Man movie released by Sony will hit theaters, then nine months later Netflix will offer the title for streaming. The film will stay on Netflix for a total of 18 months before Disney Plus will then host the title. Due to the time in which the deals were made, Spider-Man: No Way Home actually has a streaming home on Starz for the time being. It's been available on the platform since January 14, 2024. If one applies the 18 month rule from their Netflix deal, however, then that would make the film available to leave on July 14, 2025. It remains to be seen if the title actually will – especially since Disney Plus hasn't made any suggestion that they'll be acquiring No Way Home or that Starz will be losing it – but it's definitely something to look out for. As such, we'll have to see where the licensing rights behind Spider-Man: No Way Home take the film next. Fortunately, it could very well be Disney Plus once the time is right. The MCU movie will then be at home with all of the other titles tied to the franchise. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates as we have them.
