While Ceres Rail also offers full-day steam trips from Cape Town to Elgin (departing 7.45 am, returning 6 pm), the Overberg Explorer from Botrivier is a shorter, more flexible option. It's ideal for those wanting to skip the day-trip train journey and instead base themselves in the Overberg for a slower-paced winter escape.
Why overnight in Botrivier?
Just 90 minutes from Cape Town, Botrivier is a small town with big soul. Surrounded by vineyards and rugged mountains, it's known for its warm hospitality, characterful wine farms, and proudly off-the-grid attitude. It makes the perfect base for a relaxed overnight or weekend stay, where you can enjoy winemaker-led tastings, local farm fare, and misty morning views before hopping on the train to Elgin and back.
The wider Overberg region, stretching from the Hottentots-Holland mountains to beyond Caledon, is one of the Western Cape's most underrated destinations.
Whether you're in it for the rail nostalgia, a foodie market fix, or a countryside getaway, the Overberg Explorer is a timeless winter adventure waiting to happen.
Notable Stops on the Way to Botrivier (via N2):

'I found little-known UK spot where you can get huge ice cream for bargain price'

Ice cream is a classic summer dessert and a London foodie has found a hidden gem in the capital that serves giant soft-serve ice cream cones for less than you might think More and more it's getting harder to find small luxuries at a low price. As a result of inflation and the rising cost of living, many people have had to cut back on treats like takeaways or desserts but one London foodie has found a little-known spot in the capital city that sells a huge serving of ice cream for less than £5. ‌ The social media user @london_bite_and_vogue describes herself as a 'Desi foodie in London' and she focuses on hunting for vegetarian cuisine and hidden gems in the UK. In a video on TikTok, she showed an enormous soft serve ice cream cone that would be perfect to enjoy today (Sunday, July 20) as it is National Ice Cream Day. ‌ The clip shows the foodie using an ice cream machine to get two towering ice cream cones with different colours. ‌ It has gained significant attention with 525,800 views, 15,600 likes and more than 250 comments, at the time of writing. Although the TikTok user didn't say where she got the huge ice cream from, a user in the comments section revealed that it is from Kabul Korner restaurant and takeaway in Harrow, London. The eatery shared a post on Instagram promoting its huge ice cream cones where it stated that a single is £2.50 and a double is £3.50. ‌ This is quite reasonable as according to Park Holidays, the average price for a Mr Whippy in London is £4.10 per ice cream cone. Kabul Korner offers ice cream in various flavours, including mango and pistachio. Viewers who saw the TikTok video by the 'Desi foodie' were shocked at the price of the ice cream. One said: 'Omg that can't be £2.' Another called it a 'bargain' and a third viewer commented: 'In Italy it will cost you 40 euros each.' ‌ A seemingly big fan of the chilled dessert chimed in: 'Omg yes please I'll take 4.' Others highlighted the appearance of the ice cream as one viewer noted: 'That actually looks so pretty.' ‌ However, some people in the comments section weren't keen on the size of the ice cream. A viewer remarked: 'No thanks, way too big. I will stick with the regular ones, plus this is sugar overload!' Another questioned: 'Who could eat all that ice cream?' Some viewers found humour in how big the ice cream is. ‌ One joked: 'This will take me a whole day to finish. By the time I finish it it's gonna be all over my clothes!' Someone who has tried the Kabul Korner giant ice cream shared: 'Been to this place. To start eating this ice cream from a respectable position, you have to hold it down in your ankles.' A different viewer gave a suggestion: 'Bring a large Tupperware so you can put the ice cream and cone in there. And share with friends and family. And save it from falling on the floor.' While a giant soft serve ice cream cone might not be everyone's idea of a great summer dessert, this treat from Kabul Korner is ideal for budget-conscious foodies or those who want something a bit different to a regular ice cream.

German kayaker pops into Pembrokeshire on incredible European tour

Urban Heupgen from Germany and Dylan Davies, who teaches at Haverfordwest High, had a chance encounter last August while Dylan was on a summer tour in his camper van. Dylan, from New Hedges, near Tenby, was astonished to learn that Urban had paddled thousands of miles on his incredible journey, encountering all kinds of marine hazards on his way. 'I bumped into Urban last August in Spain, and when I asked how far he had come, he surprised me and said 'Germany," explained Dylan 'We got talking and it turned out he was on a multi-leg trip over a few years from Estonia through the canal and river system in Germany into the Med. "He has been met with range safety vessels, multiple species of whales, container ships, ferries and even a close call with a helicopter.' Dylan was fascinated by Urban's voyage which the solo kayaker has documented on his social media pages. Urban can be followed via on Instagram and his blog The Pembrokeshire reunion was 'a special moment', said Dylan, pictured here as he greeted Urban (centre). (Image: Dylan Davies) 'He was so unassuming," said Dylan. "When I met him, he had around 100 followers and minimal specialised kit - his sea kayak, paddle and lifejacket. "Though he isn't doing it for any fanfare or recognition he will be the first to circumnavigate Europe when complete." Dylan kept in touch with Urban through his social media, and last Saturday, July 12, he boarded his own boat to sail out for a rendezvous on Caldey Island. 'It was a very special moment," said Dylan. "The weather couldn't have been better and as he didn't have any shorts with him, as he didn't expect a hot British summer I gifted my swim shorts and a bag of Welsh cakes.' Dylan's dog Larry, was all aboard for his master's meet-up. (Image: Dylan Davies) Urban is now paddling his way across the Irish sea to the east coast of Ireland, from where he will work his way clockwise around Ireland, then to Scotland, hoping to finish this year in the Shetlands. Added Dylan: "It would be great if people could give him a follow to watch his epic and unassuming journey." You can follow Urban's voyage on his social media pages, linked above.

Tasha added a sultry selfies as she worked her best angles and displayed a very glamorous look with a pair of bold, gold earrings. Later she could be seen smiling as she at at a dinner table, cross armed, looking happy and relaxed. The stunning Instagram snaps come after MailOnline revealed that her new boyfriend Cam was in a long-term relationship just weeks before going public with the Strictly star. The CBBC presenter and zoo owner, 30, has reportedly left pals 'shocked' after he was spotted packing on the PDA with the former Love Islander at Fearne Cotton 's Happy Place festival at Gunnersbury Park in London over the weekend - before heading off to Tuscany. Cam was previously dating stunning wildlife photographer Felicity Sutton, 34, for a year and together they shared a love of animals, with pals convinced at the time that 'nothing' could break the pair up. A source told The Sun: 'It came as a surprise to everyone to see Cam with Tasha. He was so loved up with Felicity before'. 'This time last year, he was with Felicity on his birthday, and it really looked like nothing would break them, but a year on, he's in Tuscany with Tasha for his big day. Everyone is bemused. 'Felicity doesn't have any hard feelings towards him as such, and she will always cherish their time together, it's just a lot to see your ex in the limelight suddenly.' With her hair pinned back into a half up do and minimal makeup highlighting her naturally pretty features, the former Strictly contestant put on a sizzling display as she looked candidly from side to side, whilst her holiday photo was taken MailOnline have contacted Felicity and Cam's reps for comment. Cam - who has been dating Tasha since May - still features on his ex's Instagram grid, including snaps from their trip to Kenya last year where they enjoyed a safari. As the pair both snapped photos of the local wildlife, she wrote: 'When you both love the same things #couplegoals.' YouTuber Cam stars in CBBC series One Zoo Three and BBC show OZT Goes Wild alongside his brothers Ty and Aaron. His family run Hertfordshire Zoo and he is the managing director of a non-profit charity, The Big Cat Sanctuary, which rescues wild cats and protects species at risk of extinction. Meanwhile Tasha's ex, Andrew Le Page, launched into an explosive rant about her being on a dating app during their relationship. Andrew claimed on Thursday night that Tasha was using the celebrity dating app Raya while still in a relationship with him and insisted he wanted to speak out after she had appeared on 'one too many podcasts' to speak about him. Soon after, they released a shock joint statement. In the statement shared with MailOnline, the former couple who met on Love Island in 2022, came together to address 'hurtful comments' in a move that took place after Andrew accused Tasha of not being able to 'keep his name out of her mouth'. The exes quickly put Andrew's rant aside and came together to address the 'noise' around their relationship as Tasha admitted to 'making mistakes' during their romance. Both parties expressed their wish to 'move on' from the relationship after suffering 'judgement and cruelty' from online trolls. Sharing her side of events, Tasha said: 'I just want to address recent hurtful comments about me and & Andrew. We've always been open about who we are and what we went through, the hate and harsh words have been unfair and overwhelming for both of us. 'No one deserves to be torn down, especially when they're already trying to heal. We've both made mistakes, we've both learned, and we've both grown. But the judgement and cruelty we are facing from people online has been hard. 'Please remember that behind every nasty post, every comment, every story, there are real people with real emotions. Always be kind.' While Andrew added: 'Tasha and I want to address the noise around our breakup, as there's been hate going around that neither of us ever wanted. 'Things were said on both sides, but at the end of the day, no relationship is perfect, but ours still had some incredible moments I'll always be grateful for. 'I truly just want us both to move on and be happy. Wishing Tasha nothing but the best, and I'll always be proud of her.' The statements came shortly after he hit back at the star after she claimed in a new interview he 'wasn't supporting her,' before their shock split. The couple, who met on Love Island in 2022, split in January, with Tasha admitting she now regrets her treatment of him after they 'grew apart' during her stint on Strictly Come Dancing. Tasha, who has been deaf since birth and had a cochlear implant fitted at the age of five, appeared on the 2024 series of Strictly with pro partner Aljaž Škorjanec. In an interview for Rylan Clark 's How To Be In Love, Tasha claimed their relationship was already starting to fray prior to her Strictly debut, with Andrew offering 'no support' as she progressed to the show's latter stages. But Andrew furiously hit back in a now-deleted post on Snapchat, where he accused Tasha of 'talking s**t about him,' before stating that Tasha had begun using the celebrity dating app Raya before their relationship was over.
