Russian Columnist Dmitry Drize: 'Iran Is No Longer A Regional Leader'

Memria day ago
On June 27, 2025, Russian columnist Dmitry Drize wrote in the Russian daily Kommersant an article, titled "The Middle East is Already Changing," in which he assessed that, after the 12-day Israel-Iran war, the main conclusion is "obvious": "Iran is no longer a regional leader, much less a superpower that terrifies its neighbors."

Below are excerpts of Drize's article:[1]
"Iran's Nuclear Program Has Not Been Completely Destroyed, Thus Sooner Or Later Its Opponents Will Have To Repeat The Strikes"
"The 12-day war is over; the progressive world community discusses how long the peace will last. There are different conclusions, but it all boils down to the fact that Iran's nuclear program has not been completely destroyed, thus sooner or later its opponents will have to repeat the strikes. The question is in the timing. As is known, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei proclaimed a total and unconditional victory not only over the 'Zionist entity,' but even over America, which committed an act of aggression against absolutely peaceful objects of the Islamic Republic...
"Be that as it may, Tehran admits that the nuclear program has been damaged, perhaps even critically. The meaning of these statements is clear – they are made so that [Israel and the U.S.] will no longer bomb Iran...
"Donald Trump also harshly criticized journalists who question the success of the American bombing operation. The press reports that the White House will soon present a plan for the New Middle East, as a result of which wars will become a thing of the past and peace and absolute idyll will be established. Naturally, this is hard to believe.
"There Are Reports That Iran Plans To Buy J-10 Jet Fighters From China"
"So, what's next? The sides are now calculating their losses and evaluating their options. There are reports that Iran plans to buy J-10 jet fighters from China, which are believed to have demonstrated a great performance during the three-day war between India and Pakistan. By the way, the vehicles are supposed to be purchased instead of Russian Su-35, primarily because the Chinese models are cheaper and less fastidious in terms of maintenance.
"However, it is not certain that the deal will take place. Meetings on this issue have been going on for a long time. Beijing is extremely cautious regarding such a step. America, of course, is a competitor and even an adversary, but on the other hand, it is an important trading partner [for China]. Why provide an unnecessary reason for disagreement? Especially since the future of the current power in Tehran, as mentioned above, does not look cloudless at all."
"The Middle East Is Already Changing"
"The main conclusion is obvious – Iran is no longer a regional leader, much less a superpower that terrifies its neighbors. So, someone else will claim this high title from now on. There are many candidates, including Turkey and the Gulf monarchies. Israel, for its part, has re-established its position, where it wields the power of the strongest. It may not be a contender for leadership, but it is better not to anger this state or test its strength.
"In fact, the Middle East is already changing. It remains to be seen what the outcome of it will be. However, something tells me that the situation will not change for the worse; it is quite possible that it will be better. The process is underway and it is gaining momentum every day. This is the essence of changes in the current world order. It would be good, of course, to do without wars, but there is nothing to be done. Man is still imperfect."

Israel intensifies incursions into southern Syria

Shafaq News - Syria Israeli troops entered Syria's southern Daraa province, Horan Free Gathering reported on Friday. Six military vehicles advanced into Saysoon village, west of Daraa, while another unit entered a former Syrian army facility linked to the disbanded 112th Brigade near Ain Dhikr. Separately, the report indicated that Israeli forces detained three civilians during a July 2 raid on al-Basali farm in southern Quneitra. The individuals were accused of "affiliations with Iran-aligned groups" and were released after several hours. Israeli incursions in southern Syria have escalated in recent months, targeting military sites and areas near the disengagement zone. Operations have expanded across Daraa, Quneitra, and rural Damascus, disrupting local reconstruction and increasing Israeli control over buffer zones.

Trump disappointed after call with Putin as Russia rains drones on Kyiv

Shafaq News – Washington/Kyiv/Moscow US President Donald Trump voiced frustration on Friday over the recent phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, while Moscow continued its aerial assault on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv. "I am very disappointed with the conversation I had today with President Putin because I don't think he's there," he told reporters. "I'm just saying I don't think he's looking to stop, and that's too bad." On Thursday, Trump and Putin held a one-hour call during which the Russian leader affirmed that his country would not abandon its objectives in Ukraine, while expressing openness to continued negotiations with Kyiv. Trump is expected to speak with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday. Meanwhile, Kyiv was pummelled in an all-night drone and missile attack. Ukraine's Air Force reported on Telegram that Russia launched 539 drones and 11 missiles in multiple waves targeting Ukrainian territory. 'The main target of the strikes was the capital of Ukraine, the city of Kyiv!' Authorities in Kyiv said at least 23 people were injured, with 14 hospitalized. Drone debris ignited fires across six of the city's ten districts, damaging railway infrastructure, buildings, cars, and a medical facility in the Holosiivskyi district, according to Mayor Vitaly Klitschko. Zelenskyy described the attack as 'deliberately massive and cynical,' accusing Putin of showing 'disregard' for the US and peace. 'For every such strike against people and human life, they must feel appropriate sanctions and other blows to their economy, their revenues, and their infrastructure,' he wrote on X. 'Yet again, Russia is showing it has no intention of ending the war and terror.' Firefighting efforts and debris removal are still ongoing after another Russian strike. This was one of the most large-scale air attacks – deliberately massive and cynical. In total, 550 targets were launched, including at least 330 Russian-Iranian 'shaheds', along with missiles,… — Volodymyr Zelenskyy / Володимир Зеленський (@ZelenskyyUa) July 4, 2025

Trump poised for Gaza deal during Netanyahu visit

Shafaq News – Middle East Israeli officials said Thursday that US President Donald Trump could announce a proposed prisoner exchange deal with Hamas during his upcoming meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington next week. According to anonymous officials cited by a Hebrew newspaper, Hamas has not yet formally accepted the American proposal, but its response could open the door to 'direct or close-range negotiations.' They added that Trump is exerting pressure on Qatar, Hamas's key backer, to push the group toward acceptance — even if a final agreement is not immediately reached. 'The deal is making progress,' one Israeli official said, though he acknowledged obstacles remain, particularly concerning the list of Palestinian detainees that Hamas wants released. 'Hamas will continue to fight over the names — what is referred to as the 'keys' — as is customary in such negotiations,' he added. In parallel, six members of the Israeli Knesset from the ruling coalition — including lawmakers from Netanyahu's Likud party — sent a letter to the prime minister and his cabinet urging a complete defeat of Hamas and the imposition of full Israeli sovereignty over Gaza. The lawmakers warned that any deal that does not include the total dismantling of Hamas poses an 'existential threat to Israel.' They stressed they would 'not approve any solution that does not amount to a decisive victory,' signaling strong opposition to ceasefire or interim arrangements. Despite this internal dissent, government officials close to Netanyahu said the prime minister remains determined to secure a deal at any cost, viewing the current political moment as 'rare and historic.' In closed-door discussions, Netanyahu reportedly said, 'We now have fantastic political opportunities that come only once in a generation.' According to the source, these statements reflect Netanyahu's growing inclination to end the war in Gaza entirely, rather than resume military operations — especially as regional talks appear to be gaining momentum. There is increasing speculation about a broader set of regional deals involving Saudi Arabia, Syria, and possibly other countries.
