New froglets leap into the world at Amazonia in M&D's
A tropical indoor forest in Lanarkshire has successfully welcomed 30 Amazon milk froglets into the world.
Following a carefully controlled breeding programme, raised from a group of five adults, they are now doing well at Amazonia.
The large nocturnal tree frogs would naturally be found in the Amazon rainforest in South America, not the facility based in M&D's Scotland's Theme Park.
Their name refers to the milky white secretions that they release when they feel threatened, however such behaviour is rarely seen in captivity.
As members of BIAZA (British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquaria), Amazonia works with other zoological collections all over the UK, where the froglets are now being moved on to, including collections in Leeds, Northumberland and as far south as London.
Amanda Gott, Amazonia manager and zoologist said: 'There are various types of zoo breeding programmes, and it is very important that zoos cooperate in captive breeding, not only for the survival of the species but for educational purposes too as often zoos are the only place many people will get the chance to encounter these fascinating creatures.
'Amphibians across the globe, such as frogs, toads, salamanders, newts and caecilians, face a range of threats in the wild, including habitat loss, climate change, disease and pollution. It is therefore critical for their survival that they are protected and, as with many animals, zoos play a vital role in their conservation.'
Located within M&D's Strathclyde Theme Park, Amazonia is a temperature-controlled tropical indoor forest and home to over 60 species. It offers a unique place for fun and learning where the whole family can marvel at monkeys, parrots, snakes, frogs, tarantulas and much more.

Major music festival with A-list headliners cancelled at the last minute
Connecticut's popular Soundside Music Festival has abruptly been cancelled, two months before its headliners were set to take the stage. The two-day event – which was set to return to Seaside Park in Bridgeport, Connecticut on September 27 and 28 – has been axed due to 'circumstances beyond our control', organisers have said. The headliners slated for the event were The Killers, Weezer, Hozier and Vampire Weekend, with Japanese Breakfast, Remi Wolf, Alex Warren and The Last Dinner Party also included in the line-up. But now a brief message on the festival's website has announced: 'Due to circumstances beyond our control, Soundside Music Festival has been cancelled. 'Tickets will be refunded to the original method of payment in as little as 30 days depending on your bank's processing time.' The festival organisers have not provided any further specifics on why the event will not be going ahead. The official Soundside Music Festival social media accounts were taken down following the announcement, including its Instagram and Facebook pages, which had over 52,000 combined followers. General admission for a single-day ticket to the festival started at $170 (£127), according to the Soundside Music Festival's now-deleted ticket page. This comes after the Foo Fighters cancelled their performance at the festival last year, following on from lead singer Dave Grohl's admission that he cheated on his wife and fathered a child with another person. The 1% Club, hosted by Lee Mack, has left viewers seriously divided after a question from the 10% round was shared on social media. The 1% Club enthusiasts have confessed they're "worrying for society" following a particularly contentious question. Upon realising the answer was based on the number of letters in the word (with five having 4), one person commented: "If that's 10% then I worry for society." Echoing the sentiment, a fan responded: "That was my thought too," while another quickly boasted: "4 quickest I ever got one."
