Arms haul case: Court refuses bail to gangster Chhota Rajan, says offences serious

Special judge A M Patil, in his order of May 28, also refused to accept Rajan's argument of delay in trial.
"The present matter is of serious nature. Prosecution has already examined a total of 45 witnesses and as per the prosecution, the trial is likely to be completed soon," the court said.
Rajan is not entitled to bail in the present case, the court said.
A huge cache of 34 revolvers, three pistols, one silencer and 1283 live cartridges meant for use by Rajan's henchmen as part of a crime syndicate was seized by police in 2005. The prosecution's claim is that the arms were imported by Rajan's close aide Bharat Nepali.

Rajan was booked under various provisions of Indian Penal Code, Arms Act, Customs Act and Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA).
Rajan, in his bail plea, said he has been implicated in the case despite no evidence and that he has been in judicial custody since his arrest in 2015.

Undertrial prisoner from Uttarakhand killed by fellow inmate during clash in Bijnor jail
A 25-year-old undertrial was assaulted and killed by a fellow inmate following a dispute inside the Bijnor district jail on Saturday, officials said, identifying the deceased as Ashu Chauhan, a native of Kashipur in Uttarakhand who had been lodged in the jail since October last year in a theft case. In connection with the incident, the Kotwali police booked a case of culpable homicide against Zakib, 24, a resident of Bijnor who has been in jail since October 2023 on charges under the Indian Penal Code (robbery), the Gangsters Act, and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. Ravindra Nath, Jailor, Bijnor district jail, said on Saturday that the administration was informed about a clash between two undertrials in barrack number 13-B. A jail team immediately rushed to the spot and found Ashu Chauhan badly injured and unconscious, bleeding heavily. He was promptly taken to the jail hospital and later referred to the district hospital, where doctors declared him dead during treatment. The news of the death caused panic inside the jail, the officer said. During the preliminary inquiry, it was revealed that Ashu and Zakib's beds were placed next to each other. A dispute arose over the cleaning of the bed, which soon escalated into a heated argument, followed by an altercation. The situation soon turned violent and other jail inmates rushed inside the barrack and intervened, but Chauhan had sustained serious injuries by that time, according to officials. The body has been sent for a postmortem and its report is awaited. Jail officials denied having received any prior information about any dispute between Chauhan and Zakib. Chauhan's family reached the jail from Uttarakhand after being informed of his death. His body will handed over to his family after the postmortem.

Self-Styled 'Baba' Hits Followers, Feeds Them His Urine In Maharashtra
A self-styled 'baba' in Maharashtra's Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district has been exposed for subjecting villagers to horrifying and abusive rituals under the guise of spiritual healing. Operating from a temple in Shiur village, Vaijapur tehsil, the baba, Sanjay Pagare, ran a disturbing two-year-long campaign of blind faith and torment. Sanjay Pagare claimed to possess supernatural powers, telling villagers he could exorcise spirits, arrange marriages for the unmarried, and help couples have children through his " aghori" rituals. What he actually practiced was nothing short of cruel and degrading. Victims, both men and women, were beaten with sticks, made to shove their own shoes into their mouths, and forced to run in circles around the temple. In several cases, they were fed tree leaves as part of a so-called cure. The baba would also force his followers to drink his urine, claiming it was part of his spiritual treatment. The extent of this abuse came to light after activists from an anti-superstition organisation carried out a sting operation using hidden cameras. The footage, now in possession of authorities and obtained by NDTV, captures several disturbing scenes. In one video, the baba is seen stepping on a man's face as he lay flat on the ground. The same man, appearing disoriented or semi-conscious, is later shown sitting before the baba as part of a ritual. The baba throws yellow powder at him, makes him smell a shoe, and beats a drum in front of him. The man is later seen struggling to stand, with others having to lift him, appearing not in full control of his senses. Other videos show the baba striking both men and women with a long stick in what he portrayed as spiritual cleansing. For Sanjay Pagare, beating people with a stick was a routine part of his fraudulent healing practice. Following the activists' complaint, a case was registered against him under the Indian Penal Code. Authorities have filed an FIR against Sanjay Pagare under multiple legal sections for fraud, assault, and promoting superstition. Activists have called for stronger enforcement of the Maharashtra Anti-Superstition and Black Magic Act to prevent such abuses in the future.
