Guardians sweep Astros with back-to-back homers from Martínez and Ramírez
It's the first time the Guardians, who entered the series on a 10-game skid, have won three in a row since a four-game winning streak from May 21-24.
Slade Cecconi (4-4) allowed five hits and two runs with a career-best nine strikeouts in 7-plus innings for the win. Paul Sewald pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save.
Martínez homered for a second straight at-bat with his shot to the Crawford Boxes with one out in the first inning. His grand slam with two outs in the 10th inning Tuesday night lifted Cleveland to a 10-6 win.
Four pitches after Martinez's homer Wednesday, Ramírez also connected off Brandon Walter (1-2) to make it 2-0. Walter settled in after that, retiring the next 17 batters, with seven strikeouts before Bennett Sousa took over to start the seventh.
Ramírez and Carlos Santana hit consecutive singles with no outs in the inning before David Fry walked to load the bases. Johnathan Rodríguez then singled to score two and extend the lead to 4-0.
The Astros had managed just four singles when Taylor Trammell walked with no outs in the eighth and scored on a double by Mauricio Dubón that cut the lead to 4-1. There were two outs in the inning when Jose Altuve's RBI double made it 4-2.
The AL West-leading Astros went 1 for 8 with runners in scoring position to cap this disappointing series which came after they swept the Dodgers in Los Angeles over the weekend.

49ers' Jauan Jennings gets trade update during contract dispute
The 49ers can't afford to lose another wide receiver. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported last week that Jennings, who is in the final year of his contract, wants an extension or to move on to a new team. As training camp gets started it appears San Francisco will be keeping the wide receiver around. Vic Tafur of The Athletic reported that a Jennings trade is "unlikely" according to a league source. There's a couple reasons for this. The first, and most important, is that the 49ers' wide receiver situation is one of the worst in the league. Brandon Aiyuk just received his new contract but suffered a torn MCL and ACL in October that's put his status in jeopardy to start the season. Deebo Samuel was traded to the Washington Commanders. Second-year wideout Ricky Pearsall is recovering from a hamstring injury that has sidelined him to start training camp. That leaves Jennings, who led all 49ers' receivers with a career-high 77 catches, 975 yards, and six touchdowns last year. He appears to have some leverage with the lack of wide receivers available but the 49ers don't have the capital to give him a massive extension. After handing out big contracts to Aiyuk and Brock Purdy, San Francisco has had to cut key players to make the money work. So with no plans to trade him and a lack of financial flexibility, where does that leave John Lynch and the 49ers' front office? Could a player of Jennings' caliber warrant a holdout during training camp? It's drama that San Francisco was hoping to avoid after dealing with Aiyuk's holdout last offseason. The Memphis Tigers made a full-court press to join the Big 12, and they got nothing but rejection in return. Memphis tries everything, still shut out of Big 12 dreams Reports surfaced this week revealing the extent of Memphis' push to join the power conference. Their offer was aggressive: give up media rights revenue for five years, secure $200 million in sponsorships from companies like FedEx and Lowe's, and even include an exit clause allowing the Big 12 to remove them if they didn't deliver. None of it worked. The Big 12 wasn't swayed. The door remains closed, and Memphis is staying put in the American Conference. Public response gets weird After the news broke, the school's official social media account posted a photo with the American Conference's updated branding and the message: 'Proud member of the American Conference.' SMU used a zero-revenue approach to gain entry into the ACC just last year. Memphis has been impressive on the field, going 21-5 across the last two seasons. But without an invite, performance isn't enough. The Tigers are still on the outside looking in. For now, they'll keep playing in the American, whether they're proud of it or not.
