'A stewardess screamed to get off the plane - it was utter chaos': British passengers break bones as they flee Ryanair plane via the WING in terrifying incident after 'false alarm'
Passengers were screaming as they jumped from the plane's wing, witnesses said. The aircraft was due to fly from Palma de Mallorca Airport to Manchester on Friday night.
Eighteen people are believed to have been injured in the incident, with at least two UK citizens reporting broken bones - rather than the 'very minor injuries (ankle sprains, etc.)' initially cited by Ryanair.
The airline operator said that the fire alert was a 'false alarm' and claimed that 'passengers were disembarked using the inflatable slides' - despite video footage of travelllers jumping from the wing in their panic to escape.
The delayed flight was due to take off late on Friday night before passengers heard a loud bang. Crew told passengers to 'brace' before flight attendants instructed them to start leaving the aircraft.
Emergency services were called to the scene at 12:35am and six people were taken to hospital, local authorities said.
Savanah, 26, from Whitefield, Greater Manchester, was on the flight with her friend and both their mums, who had been away with their friends.
She told the Manchester Evening News that her 57-year-old mum has broken her ankle in three places and is now having surgery, while her friend's mum fractured her elbow, wrist and foot.
Savanah said she also hurt her shoulder while her friend hurt her knee.
She said: 'We were all just sat on the plane. They made an announcement saying we're going to go in five minutes.
'All of a sudden I heard a bang. It didn't worry me too much. Then everyone was screaming and running.
'The air stewardess screamed, "Get off the plane, leave your belongings." It was utter chaos.
'We got off via the wing. There were no slides. I've hurt my shoulder, my friend hurt her knee.
'Her mum fractured her elbow, wrist and foot. My mum broke her ankle. She's in a cast.
'She's having surgery now. She's done it in in three places.'
Doctors said the group are not safe to fly back to Manchester until Monday, according to Savanah.
She added: 'My mum lost her phone. They told me I couldn't get it because the plane could set on fire. Even one of the staff had to get treated.
'My mum couldn't walk. My friends mum couldn't walk. We said we needed an ambulance.
'Eventually an ambulance took us to the airport medical centre. It was also chaos in there, one single room.'
Warnings of the blaze came just after midnight, with passengers filmed abandoning the plane via one of its wings before jumping to the tarmac.
Four ambulances were mobilised and sent to the plane along with airport-based firefighters and the Civil Guard.
Regional medical emergency response co-ordinators said 18 people were treated for minor injuries, with six taken to hospital.
Three were taken to a private clinic in Palma called Clínica Rotger and the other three to Hospital Quironsalud Palmplanas.
A spokesman for a regional government-run emergency response coordination centre confirmed early this morning: 'We received an alert about a fire on a plane on the ground at Palma airport at 00.36am today.
The incident happened at Palma Airport in Mallorca in the early hours of Saturday morning
'Four ambulances were sent to the scene which were two basic life support units and two advanced life support unit.
'Eighteen people were injured and received medical assistance of whom six were taken to hospital.'
Ryanair have since said the fire alert was a false alarm.
A spokesperson for the said: 'This flight from Palma to Manchester discontinued take-off due to a false fire warning light indication.
'Passengers were disembarked using the inflatable slides and returned to the terminal.
'While disembarking, a small number of passengers encountered very minor injuries (ankle sprains, etc.) and crew requested immediate medical assistance.
'To minimise disruption to passengers, we quickly arranged a replacement aircraft to operate this flight, which departed Palma at 07:05 this morning.
'We sincerely apologise to affected passengers for any inconvenience caused.'
A confused airport worker was overheard telling a colleague in a walkie-talkie message: 'Do you know the plane has emergency exits?' as frightened travellers were filmed jumping to the tarmac from one of its wings in their rush to get away.
He added: 'Plane about to leave from apron ten or eight and now the people are jumping from the wing onto the ground.
'Something's happening, something's happening, they're evacuating the plane. Now the firefighters are coming.'

‘Costly mistake' that some holidaymakers are making when travelling abroad
Going without cash when abroad could be an expensive mistake for some holidaymakers, according to research, with more than one in three having found themselves caught out when needing physical money. Some 39% of holidaymakers have found themselves in unexpected situations where cash was required while they were abroad, according to a survey commissioned by website Be Clever With Your Cash. The most common expenses included tipping, taxi fares and shopping at local or independent retailers, according to the research. Prepaid and specialist travel cards can make it easier to rely less on physical cash while travelling overseas. But those suddenly needing that cash could end up paying extra costs, the survey carried out by Opinium, among 2,000 people across the UK who have travelled abroad, indicates. The research found some people who had to make an emergency cash machine withdrawal on their last trip overseas were charged an ATM fee. Some people also said they turned to airport exchange desks for last-minute cash, even though they may potentially be getting a worse deal than if they had shopped around for their travel money and planned ahead. The website said that stepping outside major cities can also present challenges, as rural and remote areas in some countries could be less likely to accept cards. Amelia Murray, a money expert at Be Clever With Your Cash, said: 'There's still a blind spot when it comes to cash. Many people assume that having a fee-free card is enough, but that can be a false economy if you end up using an ATM abroad that charges or get stung by poor exchange rates. 'It's not about carrying wads of cash, it's about being prepared for those moments when a card simply won't cut it.' Ms Murray suggested packing a 'cash cushion' – a small amount of local currency that could be useful for tipping, local travel, or if holidaymakers end up somewhere that does not accept cards. She also suggested that holidaymakers make sure they understand their card's policy on fees and currency conversion before they travel. People may also want to check how much they would be covered for by their travel insurer if their cash is lost or stolen while they are abroad. Research released by financial information business Defaqto in May indicated that 91% of annual and 86% of single trip policies included cash cover as standard. Just over a third (35%) of single trip travel insurance policies covered as much as £200 to £299, while a quarter (24%) covered between £300 to £399, according to Defaqto's analysis.

Airline star Jane Boulton in embarrassing blunder as she misses her flight – years after scolding late passengers
STAR of iconic hit TV show Airline, Jane Boulton, has been left red-faced after making a huge blunder. The TV personality, who found fame appearing on the ITV series, famously quipped to passengers it was "easy if you get here on time" but has now found herself missing her first ever flight over her own lateness. 5 5 Jane, whose episodes of Airline went viral last year and in 2023, took to her TikTok account to discuss how she had been unable to board her flight as planned after being too late to the airport to be checked in. Revealing that she was due to head to Gatwick Airport after attending a podcast recording, Jane found herself stuck in traffic that prevented her from arriving on time. Appearing that karma was out to get her, she said to the camera: "Came to for an interview with Lewis Nicholls yesterday and, guess what guys, for the first time in my life it was not easy because I did not get there on time. "We got stuck in the most horrific traffic on the way to Gatwick, there was an accident and literally we came off the motorway to queue up for the Gatwick turn off and it took us probably an hour to get from there." In a bitter blow, Jane was just ONE minute late to the check-in desk. And despite being Britain's most well-known check-in lady, her celebrity status and previous credentials did not help her as she was still denied the chance to board the plane after asking very nicely. Jane continued: "We missed the check-in by how long? One minute. And as nice as I was... but no, she wasn't having any of it. "So we missed our little flight with Eastern Airways and had to book on a train, so we should have arrived here at 10 yesterday morning and we got here at about four, three o'clock. "So I know how people feel now, and I can honestly say a lot of people out there are probably thinking 'karma'." Jane was based at Luton Airport working for EasyJet on their check-in desk and became a hit with reality TV fans thanks to her no-nonsense attitude. She often clashed with unruly customers and was never afraid to put them in their place. Her fans were quick to make light of the situation as they quoted many of Jane's viral catchphrases that she often used on late passengers on the show, back to her. One wrote on the post: "Well I'm sorry but a coffee shop does not look like departures (love you Jane)." Another added: "Jane, it's a plane not a bus, much love as always though." 5 5 As a third said: "It is easy if you get here on time as Jane Boulton once told a customer." Jane ceased working in the airline industry in 2014 and shortly after began running her own business, Party Paradise UK. She found herself thrust back into the spotlight when Airline found a new lease of life via TikTok with various clips and episodes going viral - 20 years after they were first aired. It saw Jane make a return to mainstream fame in 2023 and she has since built up an impressive online following. She has appeared on This Morning and various podcasts reflecting about her time on the show. Jane has also become a favourite for brand partnerships and has raked in the cash working with a whole host of companies. One full circle moment saw Jane collaborate with EasyJet as a brand ambassador for a series of viral video clips last year. 5
