Iraq Reopens Airspace to International Air Traffic
By John Lee.
The Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority (ICAA) has announced on Tuesday the reopening of Iraqi airspace to international air traffic following a comprehensive security assessment and coordination with national and international stakeholders.
Bangen Rekani, head of the Civil Aviation Authority, stated that the decision reflects improved security conditions and Iraq's ability to provide high levels of safety and air traffic control for overflying aircraft.
The reopening is expected to strengthen Iraq's strategic geographic position as an east-west air corridor, helping global airlines reduce flight times and fuel costs.
Air navigation will be managed in accordance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, with a full commitment to safety protocols and continuous coordination with regional air navigation centres and neighbouring countries' aviation offices.

Emirates to resume flights to Baghdad and Basra in early July
Baghdad ( – Emirates Airlines will resume its passenger flights to Iraq next week, with services to Baghdad restarting on July 1 and to Basra on July 2. The move comes after a temporary suspension caused by regional airspace closures and heightened tensions between Iran and Israel earlier in June. Iraq holds strategic importance for Emirates as a key market in its Middle East network. Baghdad, the capital and economic center, and Basra, Iraq's main port city, serve as vital links for trade, business, and regional connectivity. Prior to the suspension, Emirates operated multiple weekly flights to Iraq, with up to four flights per week to Baghdad alone, reflecting the strong demand for travel between the two countries. The recent escalation in the region had led to widespread flight disruptions, including the closure of Iraqi airspace, forcing Emirates and other major carriers to suspend operations temporarily. The resumption of flights marks a return to stability and underscores Emirates' commitment to maintaining connectivity with Iraq.

Royal Jordanian resumes cargo flights to Iraq after airspace restrictions
Baghdad ( – Royal Jordanian Airlines has resumed full cargo operations to Iraq following a brief suspension caused by regional airspace closures. The airline had halted its Iraqi routes due to heightened tensions stemming from the 12-day conflict between Iran and Israel, which led to the temporary shutdown of Iraqi and Jordanian airspace. According to Cargo Commercial Director Khaled Alkhawaldeh, the airline restarted freight services to Baghdad, Erbil, Basra, and Sulaymaniyah on Wednesday, June 25, after operations were suspended until June 24. With regional conditions stabilizing, Royal Jordanian has now fully restored its cargo services across Iraq.

Qatar Airways resumes full operations to Iraq as airspace reopens

With airspace restrictions now lifted, the airline will gradually resume service to major Iraqi airports. Flights to Baghdad will restart on June 30, followed by Erbil on July 1, Sulaymaniyah and Najaf on July 2, and Basra on July 3. Last week, Qatar also faced direct attacks, further impacting regional aviation and forcing a temporary suspension of several routes. As security circumstances improve, the airline is working fast to reestablish its network in Iraq, a crucial destination in its Middle East portfolio.
