Netflix announces Willy Wonka-inspired reality show where contestants must 'thrive in chaos'

Yahoo20-03-2025
Did you watch Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as a child and think, 'Oh, I would've totally breezed past all those bratty kids and won a lifetime supply of chocolate easily?' Well, now you have the chance to prove it.
Netflix has announced that they are in the process of casting for The Golden Ticket, a reality survival competition that will see its candy-loving contestants use their less-than-pure imagination to fight for a chance to enter Wonka's legendary chocolate factory. However, what's waiting for them inside the candy kingdom might not be such a sweet treat.
'We are thrilled to bring the magic of The Chocolate Factory to life like never before,' Jeff Gaspin, Vice President of Unscripted at Netflix said in a press release. 'This one-of-a-kind reality competition blends adventure, strategy, and social dynamics, creating an experience that is as captivating as it is unpredictable. For the first time, a lucky few won't just have to imagine the experience — they'll get to step inside the factory and live it.'

The series, which is described as a 'high-stakes social experiment,' is based on Roald Dahl's titular 1964 novel will challenge participants to 'adapt, strategize, and withstand the unknown' in order to win themselves an unspecified prize. The premise feels like a spiritual successor to that strange, slightly terrifying Willy Wonka-themed experience that took place in Glasgow last year, which even featured a random character named the Unknown.
Along the way, its participants will face a collection of both physical and mental games that are set to challenge their 'instincts, resilience, and ability to thrive in chaos.' Losers, we assume, will be thrown into a chocolate river or turned into human blueberries.
While a host for the series has not been announced just yet, we've got our fingers crossed that either a member of the Wonka cast (Timothée Chalamet? Hugh Grant?) or one of the Glasgow experience actors will step in to lead the scrumdiddlyumptious social experiment.

How is all of this happening? Well, Netflix secured the rights to all of Dahl's IP when they acquired the Roald Dahl Story Company in 2021. In the years since, the company has teamed up with Wes Anderson to release his 2023 short film anthology, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Three More.
Chocolate connoisseurs eager to prove themselves can apply for the series here, with the show's filming location and premiere set to be announced at a later date. For now, watch the trailer above.

Nielsen report for June 2025 shows rough times for these broadcast networks

Two milestones revealed this week illustrate the diminishing power of broadcast television in the media world—one fueled by the habits of young people and the other by their elders. During June, viewers spent more time watching streaming services than they did for broadcast and cable television combined. That happened for the first time ever in May, by a fraction of a percentage point, but the Nielsen company said on Tuesday that gap widened considerably in June. Also, for the third straight week, Nielsen said that Fox News Channel had more viewers in prime-time on weeknights than any of the main the broadcast networks ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox entertainment. For years, the mantra of media executives was that streaming represented the future for in-home entertainment. Now, that future has clearly arrived. Broadcast TV slips below 20% of total In June, 46% of Americans' TV time was spent on streaming services, led by YouTube and Netflix. Cable television networks represented 23.4% and broadcast was 18.5%, for a total of just under 42%, Nielsen said. It was the first time broadcast TV had ever slipped below 20% of total TV viewing. 'It kind of felt like the right time,' said Brian Fuhrer, Nielsen's senior vice president for product strategy and thought leadership. 'A lot of people thought it would happen more quickly.' The driving force in June was school ending for young people, meaning they had more time to watch TV, where Netflix series like 'Ginny & Georgia' and 'Squid Game' were big hits. Roughly two-thirds of people aged 6 to 17 watched streaming ahead of conventional TV, Nielsen said. In June 2024, the numbers were roughly reversed—47.7% of people were watching conventional TV in an average minute, with 40.3% logged on to a streaming service. While the direction is clear, it's not a death knell for conventional TV. June and July are fallow months, and their viewing will increase when football season begins and original episodes of comedies and dramas return, Fuhrer said. Content is distributed over more platforms It's also not a strict either-or situation; media companies are doing a better job spreading their content out on different platforms to give viewers a choice, he said. The growth of YouTube, which many consumers can access for free and is a portal for 'traditional' TV, has also fueled streaming services. Fox News has occasionally eclipsed the broadcast networks in viewership before, but last week represented the seventh week it has done so in 2025, already more than 2024 and 2023 combined. It averaged 2.4 million viewers in prime time on weeknights last week, Nielsen said. Fox News is also taking advantage of what is traditionally the least-watched time of the year for broadcast networks, when summer nights and barbecues keep people outside. The difference this year is it has won a few weeks outside of the summer, during President Donald Trump's inauguration week in January, for example. Its audience—among the oldest of all television networks—tends to stay pretty steady throughout the year.

JESSICA JONES Star Krysten Ritter Talks About Returning to the Role in DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN Season 2 and Having to Keep It a Secret — GeekTyrant

Krysten Ritter made her Marvel debut as Jessica Jones in the Netflix series that ran for three seasons before Disney+ took over the Marvel properties and the shows fizzled out. Now that Jones' co-Defender, Matt Murdock aka Daredevil, is back in action in the series Daredevil: Born Again , fans are finally getting what they've been asking for with Ritter's return in season 2. Ritter has been asked nonstop about whether she'd be seen in the new series for the last few years, and she had to play coy, but it turns out that she knew all along, and has had to keep it a secret. While promoting her latest project, the series Dexter: Resurrection , Ritter chatted about the situation on the Bingeworthy podcast for The Playlist. She reflected on the torturous time during which she had to hide the return of Jones: "Keeping it a secret has been torture. I'd known for almost two years, and it's a long time. A long time. It's either been talked about, in the works, or some state for a long time. 'So, keeping that secret and keeping the enthusiasm and waiting until the [Marvel] upfronts to announce it, it was like, when it was finally out, I was like, 'Oh my God!' 'I'm always pretending I'm not in New York… I was like, 'If it gets out, it's not because of me, because I have kept the secret!' It's just really special and exciting. And the team is amazing, and I feel grateful." Ritter also talked about what it felt like to revive the fan-favorite private investigator, saying: "It felt crazy — like no time had passed. It felt celebratory; everybody was so excited. This is all due to fan demand. I really believe I'm back because the fans have been so vocal about Jessica and feeling so passionate about her. 'And I am so thrilled to be back in these iconic boots. This is a character that I love and means so much to me, and means so much to so many women and men. And the fact that she gets to come back in this huge way is a thrill. And it's a really great team." As for what the future holds for Jones in the MCU, nothing has been confirmed, but Ritter said, hopefully: "I think there are many opportunities for Jessica. I think that she's a great way in. I think that she brings her own flavor and her own style. And I think that you could probably find her anywhere, but I do love the grounded street element. 'And what I've always loved about Jessica is how deeply personal it is. I think there's just so much to this character. She's so dynamic that it's exciting to officially be in the MCU and be brought back in this big way. 'It's amazing and wild; it's really so rare that something like this happens. So, I'm thrilled that Marvel's been so amazing and that the fans brought her back. I'm just over the moon about it." Daredevil: Born Again season 2 is set to hit Disney+ in March 2026. via: Movieweb

The Zelda Movie's Lead Actors Have Been Revealed By Nintendo

Nintendo and Miyamoto have just announced the two lead actors in 2027's live-action Zelda movie. We now know that both lead roles will be played by British actors, with Link portrayed by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth (Pinocchio) and Bo Bragason (Three Girls) appearing as Zelda . While neither is a household name, that seems likely to change in a couple of years, given the high-profile nature of this production. Ainsworth's voiced Pinocchio in 2022's live-action Disney movie, as well as appearing in Mike Flanagan's Netflix series The Haunting of Bly Manor in 2020. Only 17-years-old at the time of the announcement, it gives us a good idea of the sort of Link we're going to see on film, presumably pitched as a teenage hero in the lands of Hyrule. Zelda actor Bo Bragason is four years older, now 21, best known in the UK for various dramatic roles as a teenager. She had a prominent part in last year's Disney+ series Renegade Nell as Roxy Jackson, and like Ainsworth, is a rising star rather than an established lead actor. It's fantastic that the production is taking this route, rather than leaning on star power. Shigeru Miyamoto took to the Nintendo's Japanese X account to make the announcement, saying, 'I am pleased to announce that for the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda, Zelda will be played by Bo Bragason-san, and Link by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth-san. I am very much looking forward to seeing both of them on the big screen.' He continued in a second tweet, confirming the movie's release date, 'The film s scheduled to be released in theaters on May 7, 2027. Thank you for your patience.' The film is to be directed by Wes Bell, who previously directed the Maze Runner movies, along with last year's Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Miyamoto is producing, alongside Avi Arad, best known as the former chief creative officer at Marvel. Both Nintendo and Arad Productions are behind the project, which presumably has yet to start filming. This is Nintendo's first foray into live-action cinema, following The Super Mario Bros. Movie's animated success in 2023. That film has a sequel due out next year, with The Legend of Zelda due out the year after. It also seems like a Donkey Kong animated movie is due some time as well. . For the latest news, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
