Devin Townsend to take indefinite hiatus after North American tour
The Prog legend, 52, plans to take a break to "breathe and recalibrate" after going at it non-stop for more than three decades.
In a video update, he told fans on social media: 'For nearly 35 years, I've followed a creative path guided by instinct — each album, each tour, each project a new chapter in a story I've felt compelled to tell.
'My mind latches on to concepts, and I love chasing them down. That chase has made this journey wild, unpredictable, and deeply fulfilling.'
He continued: 'Over the years, I've heard it countless times: 'Dev, take a break… please.' But the flood of ideas, the excitement, and the support of incredible musicians and listeners have kept me going, kept me touring, and kept me grateful for a life on the road. That said, things have changed — especially since the pandemic.'
Townsend noted how tours have become a logistical challenge due to 'fewer venues, fewer crews, and a saturated touring circuit.'
Further to this, the musician's family need him.
He explained: 'And beyond the logistics, life has simply caught up with me: my parents need help, my dogs are on their last legs, the kids have moved out, 'The Moth' is nearly complete, and truthfully, I need some time to breathe and recalibrate.
'So I've made the decision to take a break from touring — an indefinite one. This upcoming North American run will be the last time you'll see me on stage for the foreseeable future.'
Townsend reassured fans that this does not mean he is retiring, insisting: 'I'll be performing until my final breath."
He went on: 'Touring has been a beautiful, exhausting constant in my life, and for once, I'm listening to the voice that says: slow down. I want to create from a place of calm inspiration rather than frantic obligation. And until I can truly be there for the people who rely on me, my creativity won't be at its best.'
Townsend's final concert of his jaunt takes place May 23 in Los Angeles.

Jane's Addiction members sue Perry Farrell for $10m
Perry Farrell is being sued for $10 million by his Jane's Addiction bandmates over the on-stage bust-up which derailed their tour. The Just Because hitmakers - which also includes guitarist Dave Navarro, drummer Stephen Perkins and bassist Eric Avery - reunited for a tour and their first new song in 24 years, Imminent Redemption, last year but things went sour in September when Perry punched Dave in the face during a gig in Boston, prompting the rest of their planned shows to be cancelled - and now the trio are suing the singer over the "brutal and unprovoked" attack. Court documents seen by - which were filed at Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday (16.07.25) - state: "Plaintiffs Dave Navarro, Eric Avery, and Stephen Perkins were forced to bring this action after Defendant Peretz Bernstein p/k/a Perry Farrell ruthlessly assaulted Navarro onstage, mid-show, during the Jane's Addiction 33-date North American reunion tour. "As if the pain and humiliation of the onstage attack were not enough, Farrell continued his unhinged barrage of punches backstage (collectively, the 'Attack'). "The Attack, which was virally viewed by millions of people worldwide, was brutal and unprovoked. It quickly forced the termination of the show and eventually the entire Tour." Navarro's attorney, Christopher Frost, added in a statement to the publication: "Ultimately, with the attack on Dave Navarro seen around the world, Perry Farrell abruptly and unilaterally ended all the plans for a Jane's Addiction revival. "He also left his bandmates holding the bag for an unfulfilled tour and record deal, as our lawsuit explains in detail. Dave, Eric, and Stephen never wanted it to come to this. "But they have been wronged, want the accurate story told, and they deserve a resolution." However, a lawyer representing Farrell said: :"This is yet another clear example of the group uniting to isolate and bully frontman Perry Farrell. The timing of this baseless lawsuit is no coincidence - it was filed only after they caught wind of legal action coming from our side. "It's a transparent attempt to control the narrative and present themselves as the so-called 'good guys' - a move that's both typical and predictable. "Just like when they released a defamatory and entirely unfounded statement about Perry's mental health and unilaterally canceled the remaining tour dates without his input, they're once again scrambling to get ahead of the truth in a desperate effort to save face." Shortly after the musicians filed the lawsuit against Farrell, the singer filed his own legal complaint, accusing them of bullying and harassment in an attempt to undermine him. In the legal papers, seen by Variety, Farrell insists the altercation was provoked and he was no consulted about the decision to cancel the tour. The documents state: "That Jane's Addiction's bandmates have sometimes been antagonistic towards each other has been well-documented. But Navarro, Avery and Perkins apparently decided that Jane's Addiction's decades of success should be jettisoned in pursuit of a years-long bullying campaign against Farrell involving harassing him onstage during performances, including, among other tactics, trying to undermine him by playing their instruments at a high volume so that he could not hear himself sing without blasting his own in-ear monitors at an unsafe level." The papers added: "Without warning or consultation and using Perry Farrell, as a scapegoat, Navarro and the other band members took it upon themselves to abruptly cancel the remaining tour dates - violating contracts and disregarding all professional obligations - and apparently break up the band for good.'
