Chery denies improper green vehicle subsidy claims in China
The denial follows an audit by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology that disqualified declarations by Chery and BYD for a combined $53 million in subsidies covering thousands of vehicles sold between 2015 and 2020.
Chery stated that it had consulted authorities regarding missing receipts due to the age of the sales records. The company emphasized that it had truthfully reported the situation and denied any fraudulent activity.
'Our company has truthfully reported to the authorities we did not collect certificates for end sales; there's no fraudulent act,' Chery said in a statement.
The audit, conducted earlier this year, disqualified 21,725 vehicles due to discrepancies such as missing documentation or failure to meet mileage thresholds. Chery accounted for 7,663 of these disqualifications, with most cases involving missing certificates rather than mileage issues.
The government has not accused Chery or BYD of fraud, and the audit documents did not specify penalties or reimbursement requirements.
However, past policies have required automakers to repay subsidies for vehicles that failed to meet mileage standards. Chery clarified that the audit covered unpaid subsidy claims, meaning no repayments were necessary.
BYD, another major Chinese EV manufacturer involved in the audit, did not respond to requests for comment. - Reuters

World Insights: China, Egypt deepen cooperation for shared growth
Egypt-China cooperation helps elevate both nations and offers a stronger voice for the Global South, said Egypt expert Salah El-Din Fahmy. CAIRO, July 14 (Xinhua) -- As China and Egypt -- now fellow BRICS members following Cairo's 2024 accession -- are to mark their 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2026, analysts anticipate a significant deepening of their economic cooperation and strategic partnership. LANDMARK DEALS PROJECTS China and Egypt signed multiple cooperation documents last week in such areas as e-commerce, green and low-carbon development, development assistance, finance and health. Experts see the deals as a boost to Egypt's ambition to become a regional energy and logistics hub and to China's efforts promoting South-South cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Among the landmark deals, the People's Bank of China (PBOC) and the Central Bank of Egypt signed a memorandum of understanding to deepen financial cooperation, which covers local-currency settlement, collaboration on central bank digital currencies and digital innovation. According to Pan Gongsheng, governor of the PBOC, these efforts will provide more efficient and convenient services for enterprises of both countries in trade, investment and financing. Diaa Helmy, secretary-general of the Egyptian-Chinese Chamber of Commerce, described the financial cooperation as a critical signal of trust and a long-awaited step in Egypt-China economic ties. He said that using local currencies could help reduce dependence on foreign currencies, stabilize trade flows and open the door for deeper institutional coordination between the two countries. "I see that partial trade exchange between the two countries in their national currencies is necessary, and that it's time to swap debt for development, as China spares no effort to strengthen relations with Egypt, which it sees as a trusted friend," Helmy said. China and Egypt officially elevated their ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2014, deepening bilateral relations across politics, trade, infrastructure, technology, and cultural exchange. Major China-Egypt projects under BRI and Egypt's Vision 2030 include the Central Business District in Egypt's New Administrative Capital and the China-Egypt TEDA Suez Economic and Trade Cooperation Zone -- an industrial cooperation model hosting 185 companies. Chinese companies have also contributed to projects like the Benban Solar Park in Aswan Province, among the world's largest, along with infrastructure in construction, manufacturing, transport and energy. "China's journey from traditional industry to high tech is a model for Egypt. We can benefit not just from Chinese investment, but from its expertise in technology, manufacturing and innovation," said Salah El-Din Fahmy, professor of economics at Al-Azhar University. SOUTH-SOUTH COOPERATION The China-Egypt partnership goes beyond the scope of economy, with officials and experts highlighting how the two countries are strengthening political coordination and amplifying the Global South's voice on key international issues. Helmy underlined the political side of the partnership, noting China supports Egypt and the Arab world on issues including the Palestinian cause, while Egypt and Arab states back China on core interests like the one-China principle and maritime rights. "This is a model of South-South cooperation across economic and political lines, reflecting the principle of a community of a shared future and the conviction that tensions and wars are not solutions but part of the problem," the expert said. In the coming years, coordination between the two countries "is essential to face global challenges, including climate change, maritime trade routes, supply chain risks, and geopolitical tensions," he added. Regarding the importance of the BRI for Egypt, Fahmy said that Egypt's geographic position makes it a gateway connecting Asia, Africa and Europe, offering a strategic platform within China's broader South-South development vision. Looking ahead, experts see the China-Egypt partnership as more than a bilateral success story -- it's part of a shift toward a balanced, multipolar world where emerging economies play a stronger role in global development. "Egypt-China cooperation is entering a new qualitative phase, helping elevate both nations and offer a stronger voice for the Global South on the international stage," Fahmy said.

BYD aims to triple Saudi footprint after Tesla enters market
BYD sold more fully electric cars in Europe than Elon Musk's firm for the first time ever in April. (EPA Images pic) RIYADH : Chinese automaker BYD Co plans to ramp up its expansion efforts in Saudi Arabia, building on momentum from Tesla Inc's launch in the country and capitalising on the kingdom's push to become a new hub for electric cars. BYD, which launched in Saudi Arabia last year and currently runs three showrooms there, aims to open another seven locations by the second half of 2026, according to Jerome Saigot, managing director for Saudi Arabia. The firm expects to sell more than 5,000 vehicles this year in the kingdom, a drop in the bucket for BYD's overall sales but sizable in a market where gas-guzzling cars dominate the roads and EV adoption has been slow going. 'Saudi is a complex market. You need to go fast. You need to think big,' Saigot said in an interview with Bloomberg. 'We are not here to stay at five or ten thousand cars a year,' he added. Saudi Arabia is investing heavily in the EV industry through its Public Investment Fund (PIF) as part of a broader strategy to cut emissions, curb auto imports and diversify the local economy. The PIF has backed Lucid Motors as the automaker works on building Saudi's first auto manufacturing plant. It has also created its own EV brand known as Ceer and started a JV to build out EV charging stations. Still, electric cars account for just over 1% of total car sales in the kingdom, with high costs, sparse charging infrastructure and extreme temperatures factors challenging EV adoption, according to PwC. Tesla opened its first showroom in Riyadh in April, joining automakers including BYD and Geely in trying to gain a foothold in the market. BYD's Saigot sees the move as beneficial, with Tesla helping to raise EV awareness. 'The more Tesla communicates on marketing, the better it is for us,' said Saigot, who started at BYD in April after serving in previous roles at Nissan Motor Co and Great Wall Motor Co Ltd. BYD has been gaining ground on Tesla in recent months. The Chinese automaker sold more fully electric cars in Europe than Elon Musk's firm for the first time ever in April. Some analysts now predict BYD will pull ahead of Tesla globally for the full year.

Bursa Malaysia holds steady to close higher, tracking regional gains
KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia reversed last Friday's losses to close higher on Monday, tracking gains in regional markets. At 5 pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) climbed 1.44 points, or 0.09 per cent, to 1,537.51 from Friday's close of 1,536.07. The benchmark had opened 0.10 of a point lower at 1,535.97 and hovered between 1,533.93 and 1,538.33 throughout the session. The market breadth was negative, with 514 decliners outpacing 432 gainers and 510 counters unchanged, while 962 were untraded and nine suspended. Turnover declined to 2.93 billion shares worth RM1.67 billion, compared with 3.37 billion shares worth RM2.30 billion last Friday. UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd head of investment research, Mohd Sedek Jantan, said the key index's positive performance was underpinned by stronger-than-expected trade data from China, with exports rising 5.8 per cent year-on-year in June, well above the 3.6 per cent forecast. "The data suggested that Chinese exporters were accelerating shipments ahead of the expiry of the 90-day tariff reprieve, providing some relief to global market sentiment and partially offsetting lingering concerns over Washington's tariff rhetoric," he told Bernama. Investors will also monitor more upcoming data from China, particularly June trade figures and the second-quarter gross domestic product (GDP). The Chinese government is due to release the economic data tomorrow. Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng said the local market sentiment remains cautious amid ongoing concerns over US tariffs, with investors closely monitoring their implications for ASEAN economies and global supply chains. "Nevertheless, the benchmark index is well supported above the 1,530 level. While commodity-related stocks saw some selling pressure, defensive and stable names in banking, consumer and utilities showed resilience," he noted. Thong anticipates the FBM KLCI to trend within the range of 1,530-1,560 for the week. Among the heavyweight counters, Maybank gained three sen to RM9.72, while Public Bank and Tenaga Nasional rose two sen each to RM4.34 and RM13.98, respectively. CIMB and IHH Healthcare both edged up one sen to RM6.69 and RM6.59. In active trade, NexG gained two sen to 47 sen, Wentel Engineering grew 1.5 sen to 33.5 sen, Malaysian Resources Corporation added half-a-sen to 54 sen, Zetrix AI was 1.5 sen lower at 98.5 sen, and Tanco was flat at 90.5 sen.
