Osaka splits with coach Mouratoglou
Osaka, ranked 49th, began working in Canada with Wiktorowski, who coached Poland's Agnieszka Radwakska from 2011-2018, helping her reach the Wimbledon final and world number two ranking in July 2012. Wiktorowski also coached Poland's Iga Swiatek from late 2021 until last October, a run where she won four of her six career Grand Slam singles titles, before adding the most recent at Wimbledon earlier this month.
Osaka, who improved to 11-1 in matches against players ranked outside the top 100, will next face 13th seed Liudmila Samsonova in the second round. They have split four prior meetings but Osaka won the two they played on hardcourts. Former world number one Osaka, 27, began working with Mouratoglou last September.
'Merci Patrick it was such a great experience learning from you,' Osaka posted on social media. 'Wishing you nothing but the best. You are one of the coolest people l've ever met and I'm sure I'll see you around.'
Mouratoglou said on Instagram he was 'grateful for the trust, the journey and what we have built together,' and told Osaka he 'will always root for you.' Under the Frenchman's guidance, Osaka reached the Auckland final in January but retired after the first set with an abdominal injury. She won twice at the Australian Open but retired after the first set in her third match with the same injury.
Osaka won her first WTA title since the 2021 Australian Open in May at the L'Open 35 de Saint Malo, but fell in the first round of the French Open and the third round at Wimbledon. — AFP

MONTREAL: World number two Coco Gauff battled into the third round of the WTA Canadian Open on Tuesday by outlasting US compatriot Danielle Collins 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7/2). Gauff won the last six points of the match to capture her opener in her first hardcourt tune-up event on the road to the US Open, which starts on August 24. Zverev makes strong winning Toronto return after off court
TORONTO: Alexander Zverev made a storming return after a month away from tennis on Tuesday, with the top seed pounding out a 7-6 (8/6), 6-3 win over Adam Walton to reach the third round of the ATP Toronto Masters. The German top seed, who lost in the Wimbledon first round, has spent the last weeks dealing with mental burnout and also made a trip to Rafael Nadal's Mallorca academy for consultations and perhaps some career advice during his time away. The ATP world number three came from 4-1 down in the opening set tiebreaker and did not face a break point until he found himself down 0-40 as he tried to serve out victory leading a set and 5-3. Olympic biathlon champion confirmed dead after accident
KHAPLU: Germany's two-time Olympic biathlon gold medallist Laura Dahlmeier was confirmed dead aged 31 on Wednesday after being hit by falling rocks on a Pakistani mountain. The dangerous nature of the site made rescue efforts 'impossible', her agency said in a statement issued on Wednesday, which confirmed her death. 'Rescue efforts to recover her failed and the operation was suspended,' the statement continued. The accident happened around midday on Monday at an altitude of 5,700 metres (18,700 feet) on Laila Peak in the Karakoram range, according to a statement from her team on her official social media pages. Dahlmeier's climbing partner was able to sound the alarm after reaching safety. 'It was determined that a helicopter rescue is not possible,' Areeb Ahmed Mukhtar, a senior local official in Ghanche district, where the more than 6,000 metre mountain is located, told AFP earlier on Wednesday. 'The conditions at the altitude where she was injured are extremely challenging,' he added. Shipton Trek & Tours Pakistan, which organized the expedition, confirmed the ground rescue by a team of four that includes three Americans and a German mountaineer. Dahlmeier was 'hit by falling rocks,' her team said on Tuesday, adding no one had yet been able to reach her due to the danger of further rockfalls and the site's 'remoteness'. Muhammad Ali, a local disaster management official, told AFP that weather conditions have been 'extremely harsh' in the region for the past week, with rain, strong winds and thick clouds. Dahlmeier, an experienced mountaineer, had been in the region since the end of June and had already ascended the Great Trango Tower. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier issued a statement on Wednesday calling Dahlmeier 'an ambassador for our country around the world (and) a role model for peaceful, joyful, and fair coexistence across borders.' She won seven world championship gold medals, and at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang she became the first female biathlete to win both the sprint and the pursuit at the same Games. Dahlmeier retired from professional competition in 2019 at the age of 25. She went on to become a commentator on biathlon events for German broadcaster ZDF, and also took up mountaineering.
