GRONINGEN, Netherlands (Reuters) -Memphis Depay was denied the chance to complete a hat-trick on Tuesday, and take sole possession of the Dutch national team's all-time scoring record in the process, as coach Ronald Koeman said he wanted to keep him hungry for goals.
Depay scored twice inside the opening 16 minutes of the Netherlands' 8-0 win over Malta in a World Cup qualifier to equal Robin van Persie's record of 50.
Both players have 50 goals in 102 international appearances.
"I equalled Van Persie, I am happy with that," said Depay, who was taken off in the 72nd minute with the Dutch 4-0 up.
"But this is just an interim total. Of course I am also going for 51, 52 and also 53. If I had played longer, I might have scored one more tonight," he told reporters.
"I didn't say anything about the fact that the coach took me off early. I was already happy that I could do what I've been doing for years ... scoring."
Depay scored his first international goal against Australia at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil but it has not always been smooth sailing over the years with the national team.
"We have had some turbulence over the years," he said.
"There have been many coaches and many players have come and gone. The times have shaped me and made me realise what I want.
"Ultimately, it's important that we're at the World Cup and that we go far."
Koeman has consistently backed Depay over his two spells in charge of the Dutch, even when he struggled with his club form.
"I've always thought Memphis is a great player. I think he deserves a great compliment. He's had a year full of injuries, but he's fit and hungry now,' said Koeman.
"It's great that he didn't score the third, because then he stays hungry,' he quipped on Dutch television.

Swimming-Canadian teen speedster McIntosh takes aim at Ledecky's throne

NEW YORK (Reuters) -Canadian teen sensation Summer McIntosh is coming for American legend Katie Ledecky's crown as the swimming portion of the World Aquatics Championships kicks off in Singapore on Sunday, marking a tantalising new chapter of their rivalry. Ledecky has kept a tight grip on the 800 metres freestyle, winning four Olympic golds and hoping to become the first swimmer to win seven world titles in a single event when she takes on the distance in Singapore. In May, she shattered her own world record, bettering the mark she set nine years previous. "I've always approached each race with a mindset that something like that could happen," Ledecky told the outlet SwimSwam after the race. "Even as that didn't happen for many, many years, I still maintain that approach." Only the 18-year-old McIntosh appears capable of standing in her path at worlds. She came within two seconds of the 28-year-old American's mark last month, signalling the chance that fans could soon see a changing of the guard. She famously ended Ledecky's 13-year unbeaten streak in the event in 2024, when she bested the American by nearly six seconds at a sectionals meeting in Orlando, Florida. "Anytime I get to race Katie, it's a learning experience and it's always a good race," she told reporters this month. "We bring the best out of each other." McIntosh completed one of the greatest weeks in swimming history with a hat-trick of world records in June, becoming the first to break three different individual long-course records in one meet since American Michael Phelps in 2008. She broke the world marks in the 200m and 400m individual medleys, as well as the 400m freestyle, another event where she will face off against Ledecky in Singapore. McIntosh and Ledecky finished second and third on the podium, respectively, in the 400m at the Paris Olympic Games, behind Australian Ariarne Titmus, who is not competing at worlds. McIntosh's goal in Singapore is to become the first since Phelps in 2007 to win five solo golds at a single World Aquatics Championships, with the 200m butterfly, 200m medley and 400m freestyle also on her agenda. She hopes to compete in five individual events at the Los Angeles 2028 Games, as well. "I'm trying to see this new challenge and see if I can do five events individually and how well I can do in them and how I can manage it... doing that run through now, three years out, is definitely something that will give me lots of confidence," she said. Motor racing-Piastri has learnt from costly Silverstone penalty

FILE PHOTO: Formula One F1 - British Grand Prix - Silverstone Circuit, Silverstone, Britain - July 6, 2025 McLaren's Oscar Piastri in action during the race REUTERS/Jaimi Joy/ File Photo SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium (Reuters) -McLaren's Oscar Piastri says he has learnt from a costly British Grand Prix penalty and will not brake as hard when leading behind the Formula One safety car at restarts. The championship frontrunner was handed a 10 second penalty at Silverstone this month for erratic braking before the restart when the safety car was about to return to the pits. The penalty cost him the win, handing it to teammate Lando Norris, and trimmed his overall lead to eight points at the season's midpoint. Stewards ruled the Australian had suddenly braked hard, forcing Red Bull's reigning champion Max Verstappen who was right behind him to take evasive action and momentarily overtake. Piastri said he had done the same manoeuvre in the past, as had others, but accepted it would now be punished by the stewards. "I looked through it with the team afterwards and I think there's been a lot of learning on both sides," the McLaren driver told reporters ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix, where he arrived with an eight point lead over teammate Lando Norris. "I still have my feelings about it I guess, but it's in the past now and I've moved on. "If it needs to be penalised now then that's fine. I know that for the future, but obviously immediately after the race I was frustrated." Piastri added that there had been discussions with the governing FIA to clarify the situation and how it might have been handled differently. "I won't brake as hard next time. It's as simple as that," he said. "And I think also now the threshold is a bit clearer on where that stands, so I will just simply not brake as hard." Belgium, the longest track on the calendar and one of the fastest, is a favourite circuit for Piastri although the race will only be held in four of the next six years as Formula One alternates some venues. "I would like to win anywhere but here is always a track I've really enjoyed from the first time I came here," said the Australian. "It's a track that in my opinion should be on the calendar every year as long as Formula One exists." (Reporting by Alan Baldwin, editing by Christian Radnedge)

Raducanu beats Osaka in straight sets to reach Washington quarters

WASHINGTON: Emma Raducanu beat four-times Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka 6-4 6-2 in their first career meeting to reach the quarter-finals of the Washington Open on Thursday. Raducanu, U.S. Open champion in 2021, next faces former world number three Maria Sakkari after the Greek stunned American second seed Emma Navarro in straight sets. "I thought it was going to be a really difficult match. Naomi's won four slams, she's been world number one, won Masters," Raducanu told Sky Sports. "She's so dangerous and on the hard courts, I think she's particularly comfortable. "I knew I was going to have to play well and manage my own service games, which I'm really proud of how I did. I was making some inroads in her service game after I got used to it a little bit. "I'm really pleased with how I handled the ball speed and conditions here in DC." Raducanu, who will reclaim the British number one ranking from Katie Boulter when the WTA rankings are released on Monday, is also into the women's doubles semi-finals alongside Wimbledon 2022 champion Elena Rybakina. Venus Williams' comeback tournament after 16 months away from the game ended with a 6-2 6-2 loss to Polish fifth seed Magdalena Frech. The 45-year-old seven-times singles Grand Slam champion became the oldest player to win a WTA singles match since 2004 when she beat Peyton Stearns in her Washington opener on Tuesday. --REUTERS
