Shay Mitchell and Gap Just Dropped Your New Favorite Travel Capsule Wardrobe—and Pieces Start at $34

Lounging across a baby blue sofa in a chic black jumpsuit, Shay Mitchell is the picture of style. That we were there to discuss her new Gap x Béis collaboration (and her current outfit could fold down to convert into a pair of lounge pants) only confirmed what I was already beginning to suspect: Mitchell has just dropped the perfect travel capsule collection. After launching Béis back in 2018, the actress and entrepreneur quickly gained status as a celeb whose business ventures actually align with their personal interests, a fact which became stunningly clear as Mitchell lit up telling Travel + Leisure about her limited-edition collection with Gap. 'I'm so passionate, I'm so excited, I would never pretend to play too cool,' she gushed. 'This is insane.' As for her inspiration for the drop, which includes five stunning denim-inspired luggage pieces and an array of mix-and-matchable wardrobe staples designed to be the only things you need to pack, Mitchell explained, 'I thought about how I travel—not even getting on a plane, just on the go—and I want to be comfortable.' And after nailing the comfort factor, she was able to turn to her other priority: 'Looking good at the same time.' The rapidly selling-out line is crafted with the same quality and attention to detail that both Gap and Béis are known for, and Mitchell had no shortage of insights to give on her favorite picks from the drop ('How much time do we have?' she joked). Keep reading to find more highlights from the collection, including a cozy sweatshirt-turned-neck pillow, effortlessly cool barrel jeans, and an upgraded carry-on rolling suitcase—starting at $34. The Gap x Bèis collection is rich with thoughtfully designed travel apparel that mirrors the caliber of traditional Béis bags, so it should come as no surprise that many items in this new line boast hidden features, like the travel pillow built into the hood of the Heavyweight Travel Hoodie. Mitchell shared that all it takes is a few breaths to blow up the hood for a boost of cushioning, and you'll find it easy to deflate upon landing. Outside of that, the iconic sweatshirt is fitted with a special AirPod pocket on the arm along with two side pockets—and each pouch is secured with a zipper because, as Mitchell explained, 'When you're sitting on the plane, you don't want things falling out.' As we spoke, Mitchell lounged comfortably in the Convertible Bandeau Jumpsuit (which she made sure to stress was wrinkle-resistant)—another piece that speaks to the versatility and quality of the new collection. 'Every single item has functionality to it, which is the same thing that we do at Béis with all of our bags,' Mitchell said. This can be seen in the multifaceted design of the jumpsuit that features a stretchy knit material and can be worn as an outfit of its own or folded down to create a pair of wide-waistbanded pants that will put your favorite pair of airport sweats to shame. While Mitchell styled her outfit with a chic pair of heels for the collection launch, the under-$100 jumpsuit can just as easily be worn with sensible sneakers to optimize both style and comfort during your travels. Plus, you can leave the portable steamer behind, since it's made from a forgiving rayon-nylon blend. Even Gap's denim pieces (a staple the brand famously excels at) have been optimized for travel comfort. The High-rise Barrel Jeans are a testament to that fact, thanks to their loose, breathable fit that's actually comfortable enough to sit in for long periods of time—in fact, they're one of Mitchell's favorite pieces from the collection. In addition to the relaxed cotton construction and multitude of pockets, Mitchell noted, 'There's a little D ring on the belt loops, just in case you want to put your keys on it.' If you're someone who likes to put together a proper outfit for the airport, these barrel jeans are the perfect base. Even pieces like simple wardrobe basics were given an upgrade for the new Gap x Béis collection, with the Organic Cotton VintageSoft Crop Graphic T-shirt as the prime example, with the phrase 'Plane White Tee' subtly embroidered across the front. But that was Mitchell's aim all along: to put her own spin on pieces guaranteed to get plenty of use in your day-to-day life. 'All the little puns, you can't notice them unless you get up close because they're subtle. But there's functionality to it,' she said. A gorgeous layering piece that can be styled with every bottom in the collection (and really anything in your closet already), this basic white tee is made from 100 percent organic cotton with a thick, soft knit and a crewneck fit you'll love. There's nothing 'plane' about it. It wouldn't be a Gap x Béis collection without new luggage, and the Carry-on Roller is a stunning pick that's been given the Gap treatment. Seeing as the brand is known for its timeless denim, this trusty suitcase now comes in a stunning baby blue shade, and Mitchell added, 'We did a little bit of a twist with the denim and teal blue [shade]. Even the actual suitcases have a little bit more of a texture to them, like a denim jean.' The hardside suitcase is fitted with four smooth 360-degree rolling wheels and a TSA-friendly lock to keep your belongings safely stored inside, and it's built with an expandable design to offer more packing space in a pinch. The interior contains compression straps that keep your clothing neatly folded and in place throughout your travels, and it even features a handy AirTag pocket for tracking on the go. Just like the rest of us, Mitchell is focused on achieving maximum comfort at the airport, but according to her, 'comfort doesn't just mean a sweat suit.' We tend to agree, which is why the Knit Denim Baggy Shorts are a true highlight from the collection as they're made from a sweatpant-like material that's as cozy as your favorite loungewear with a slightly more tailored fit. 'It looks like denim, but they're actually soft and comfortable—you would never know,' Mitchell raved. Shoppers were so smitten with the Knit Denim Baggy Jeans that they've already sold out in several sizes. But while you're waiting for a restock, these breathable shorts are an excellent alternative for the summer months that'll help you channel Mitchell's cool girl style into your own airport outfit. Best of all? They're unisex. An oversized button-down will always be a valuable, versatile addition to your travel wardrobe, which is exactly why Mitchell included the striped Poplin Dolman Big Shirt in the new collection—especially when paired with the Poplin Boxer Shorts. The loose-fitting button-down works as a comfy in-flight layer or a stylish top for a nice dinner or event, and it's made from a soft cotton fabric that'll remain gentle against your skin, even if you're just styling it over the $38 Seamless Logo Sports Bra. 'Being comfortable was always number one for me,' Mitchell shared, adding that the secondary priority was 'looking good while you travel.' This relaxed button-down will help you achieve both goals, not to mention it's perfect for all-season wear. Your new go-to travel backpack just dropped, and per Mitchell's unique design instruction, it's made of a soft yet durable denim material that'll hold up well through everything on your itinerary. Well-suited for adventuring and day-to-day life, the surprisingly spacious bag is crafted with thoughtful details like a padded laptop pocket, a built-in key leash, and a handy trolley sleeve at the back. While Mitchell touts the shopper-adored Weekender Bag as her favorite piece of luggage—'I just love everything about it and it makes everything so great to travel with,' she said—this best-selling backpack is a great alternative that easily slides under the airplane seat, holds everything you might need for in-flight use, and looks great with every outfit. Favorite highlights from the Freaks List, plus the coaches' poll debuts

The Pulse Newsletter 📣 | This is The Athletic's daily sports newsletter. Sign up here to receive The Pulse directly in your inbox. Good morning! Time to pick a favorite college football player. College football, despite some recent upheaval, is a sport of rites and traditions. Rivalries, bowl games and sentient Pop-Tarts weave a beautiful, funny and stupid tapestry. We love it. In that tapestry each year is Bruce Feldman's annual Freaks List, which comes at a perfect time. The entire draft cycle has petered out for a bit. Excitement for the upcoming season is boiling. No better junction to talk about some of the sport's most eye-popping players. Advertisement Bruce picked 101 Freaks — which, to be clear, is a very complimentary term in this space — and we cannot fit all of them here, of course. I'm picking a few that jumped out with some notes appended: 1. Ohio State WR Jeremiah Smith It's legitimately funny how entrenched Smith is as the best player in the sport right now. He was an NFL player the moment he stepped onto a college field last year and helped the Buckeyes win a national title. His measurables are absurd: 11-foot broad jump, 38-inch vertical jump and 23.5 mph speed, all at 6-foot-3 1/2. He also gave up Wendy's for the season, which is impressive. 2. Alabama OT Kadyn Proctor Proctor is a unique character in the NIL era, having transferred from Alabama to Iowa and back to Alabama without playing a down for his home-state Hawkeyes. He's also an elite prospect, and I could not get over his stats in the weight room: 'This summer, he squatted 815 pounds, benched 535 and power cleaned 405.' He's also 6-foot-7 and 366 pounds. None of this is normal. 26. Toledo TE C.C. Ezirim My favorite genre on this list is the small-school athletes that I might not have known before the season if not for Bruce's reporting. Ezirim is a specimen, 6-foot-7 and 245 pounds, and can hit 22 mph on the radar gun. If he has a big season, expect every NFL scout to drool uncontrollably. It's a great day. See all 101 Freaks here. So many great anecdotes in there, too. Spurs lock up Fox De'Aaron Fox agreed to a four-year, $229 million extension with San Antonio yesterday, cementing the star point guard as a long-term partner to wunderkind Victor Wembanyama. It also creates a bona fide two-timeline system for the Spurs, who picked point guard Dylan Harper in this summer's draft. Fox allows them to compete now; Harper, Wembanyama and Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle are all under 21. Read our full story for more analysis. Advertisement Texas rules the coaches' poll The Texas Longhorns are No. 1 in the first football coaches' Top 25 poll of the year, finishing just ahead of defending national champion Ohio State. Scott Dochterman says No. 20 Kansas State is underrated, while the aforementioned second-ranked Buckeyes might be overrated. Can't wait to argue about all this until Labor Day. That Week 1 matchup between No. 6 Clemson and No. 9 LSU is looking delicious for the general public and terrifying for me. See the full rankings here. More news 📫 Love The Pulse? Junya Watanabe Man X Filson Collection Drops Tomorrow

A peacoat style double breasted coat based on the Filson Mackinaw Cruiser jacket, with shearling collar. Junya Watanabe Man The Junya Watanabe Man x Filson limited edition capsule collection will drop tomorrow at Filson's New York, Los Angeles and Milan stores as well as Dover Street Market and The decidedly avant-garde pieces debuted earlier this year at the Watanabe Man runway show during Men's Fashion Week in Paris — described as 'bold reinterpretations of timeless Filson silhouettes, including the JacShirt, Mackinaw Wool Cruiser, and Mackinaw Work Vest.' They had been in the works for several months. Last fall, Watanabe traveled from Tokyo to Seattle to meet with Filson's Chief Creative Officer, Alex Carleton. 'It was a perfect Seattle evening – windy, rainy, cold and dark,' recalled Carleton of Watanabe's arrival at the brand's flagship store. Carleton, who has been with the 128 year-old heritage brand for over a decade, had prepared rack upon rack of pieces from the company's archives – from uniforms they'd produced for the U.S. Forest Service to old-school fishing vests – as well as graphic design elements in the form of patches and logos, for the man he described as a 'superstar.' Watanabe, for his part, had arrived with sketches and ideas of pieces he was interested in deconstructing. It's worth noting that this was not the first time the Japanese designer, who started as an apprentice pattern-maker at Comme des Garçons and launched his own label in 1992, had collaborated with Filson. In 2012 he launched pieces under his Comme des Garçons sub‑label (Eye), and last year he released a special edition Denim Cruiser jacket for said jacket's 110th anniversary. (Fun fact: the cruiser jacket was originally designed and engineered for timber surveyors working in the Pacific Northwest, with specific pockets for maps and surveyors tools, and was patented in 1914). Junya Watanabe special edition jacket to celebrate the Filson's Cruiser's 110th anniversary Junya Watanabe Man Carleton recalled that Watanabe 'was a consummate observer. He inspected everything with austerity and respect, and spent hours taking notes and photographs.' All the while Carleton, who previously held positions at Polo Ralph Lauren and L.L. Bean, engaged while attempting to remain calm in the presence of one of his idols. 'I remember living in New York City in the '90s and seeing a collection he did with [historic British leather company] Lewis Leathers. This was before people were going collab crazy,' he noted. 'I was really struck by how he integrated and adopted heritage clothing into modern art. He had a very skilled way of integrating disparate parts and pieces, disparate references to create something new and original.' A modern iteration of a Filson Packer coat originally made for ranchers. Junya Watanabe Man After that initial meeting, Carleton took Watanabe to a second Filson shop located in an area of north Seattle near the banks of Salmon Bay (so named because hundreds of thousands of salmon migrate through this estuary every year). 'I've got one of my style icons in my truck, and we're talking about Seattle and grunge and music he likes and the movie 'My Own Private Idaho.' It was very cool to spend time with him.' The next day, Watanabe flew back to Japan. Carleton kept expectations low. 'I didn't know what it would yield, but I didn't expect that it would be a collection, and I don't think that he expected it would be a collection.' Within a few weeks it became clear that the collaboration would be more than just a few pieces. Carleton was sent sketches to review, comment and approve before Watanabe's studio would proceed. 'The sketches just kept coming and coming and I started to realize this might be a much bigger thing. Then we had a conversation when [Watanabe] said the entire show would be based on and inspired by Filson.' 41 looks — From sharply tailored fishtail mod coats to hybrid overcoats and reconstructed shirt jackets — were shown in a stark, chilly, concrete Parisian venue hung with Filson ad campaigns from over the decades. (Watch the show here). Carleton noted that 'it was a very comprehensive and expressive point of view.' 'It was all authentic. Everything from color, textures, materials and silhouettes. There were accessories, original tin cloth bags. So the icons were represented. He did some creative fusion pieces taking elements from our sporting goods heritage, so there were parts and pieces of fishing vests integrated into outerwear pieces.' Coat with articulated fishing and gear pockets. Junya Watanabe Man 'That is the cool thing about Junya, I don't think anybody can argue the authenticity of his artistry and creative vision,' said Carleton. 'I felt he'd done an incredible job paying homage to the classic pieces of the Filson heritage, our business and who we are.' The Junya Watanabe Man x Filson limited edition capsule collection will drop tomorrow (August 6th) at Filson's New York, Los Angeles and Milan stores as well as Dover Street Market and A coat with elements from the Filson Mackinaw wool cruiser jacket; the red and black plaid fabric is original Mackinaw Heritage plaid wool.
