Firebrand evangelical pastor John MacArthur dies at 86

John MacArthur Jr, an influential figure in American evangelicalism, died at 86 on Monday after a series of illnesses.
MacArthur led Grace Community Church in California for 56 years, building a vast following through his popular 'Grace to You' radio ministry and authoring hundreds of books and biblical commentaries.
Widely recognised for his verse-by-verse preaching style, he was often hailed as 'the world's premier expositor', according to The Roys Report.
His death was announced by Phil Johnson, longtime head of MacArthur's media ministry and editor of many of his books. MacArthur had undergone multiple heart and lung surgeries over the years and was hospitalised earlier this month with pneumonia.
Revered for his uncompromising, fundamentalist theology and Calvinist doctrine, MacArthur also founded and expanded The Master's University (earlier named Los Angeles Baptist College).
His ministry's slogan was 'Unleashing God's Truth, One Verse at a Time'.
While deeply influential, MacArthur's legacy is also marked by controversy – including alleged mishandling of abuse cases, misogynistic remarks, plagiarism claims, and clashes with authorities over Covid-19 restrictions. An ardent opponent of feminism, LGBTQ rights, and evolution, he was central to the resurgence of Calvinism in the US, Baptist News Global reported.
In his later years, MacArthur became an increasingly vocal figure in America's cultural and political battles. He condemned critical race theory and emerged as a prominent evangelical critic of 'wokeness'.
Though Grace Community Church initially closed at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, it soon defied California's public health orders by resuming indoor services, prompting a legal standoff that ended with the state and Los Angeles County paying an $800,000 settlement over alleged violations of religious freedom.
'Evangelicalism is a pulpit-driven movement, and John has driven the most influential pulpit in evangelical Christianity for more than a half a century,' R Albert Mohler Jr, the president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, in Louisville, said in an interview earlier this year, according to The New York Times.
I had the privilege of meeting Pastor John in 2019. Then, I attended The Master's Seminary for a few semesters where I learned (and still use) MacArthur's deep system for biblical exposition. We differed on eschatology and other secondary doctrines but he still remains one of my… pic.twitter.com/jYvouvA5IE

MacArthur was the son of Jack MacArthur, an independent fundamental Baptist preacher and radio host known for 'The Voice of Calvary'.
Deeply influenced by his father, MacArthur attended Bob Jones College before transferring to Los Angeles Pacific College. He earned a Master of Divinity from the Biblical Institute of Los Angeles (now Biola University and Talbot School of Theology), where he later became a faculty representative.
After graduation, he worked with his father's ministries and was ordained by the Independent Fundamental Churches of America.
In 1969, Grace Community Church in Sun Valley appointed MacArthur as its youngest and third pastor.
Our hearts are heavy, yet rejoicing, as we share the news that our beloved pastor and teacher John MacArthur has entered into the presence of the Savior. This evening, his faith became sight. He faithfully endured until his race was run.2 Timothy 4:1-8 pic.twitter.com/5JplmC0Dvp

Under his leadership, the church expanded rapidly, and his preaching led to the creation of the 'Grace to You' media ministry, which now broadcasts in nine languages on over 2,400 stations.
He also led The Master's University and authored the bestselling 'MacArthur Study Bible' – which has reportedly sold more than four million copies.
Though he received an honorary doctorate from Biola in 1977, some criticised his use of the 'Doctor' title.
Critics also accused MacArthur of oversimplifying scripture, arguing that his insistence on a single, definitive interpretation of even the Bible's most complex passages misled listeners. But to his followers, that was precisely his strength.
MacArthur 'inspired thousands of pastors to believe that explaining what the Bible means honours God, saves people and is just plain interesting,' John Piper, a retired pastor and popular theologian in Minnesota who was a longtime friend, told The New York Times. 'To this day, from Dallas to Dubai, young people (especially men) come up to me and say that they listen to John MacArthur.'
'Grace To You' ministry website noted: 'While this is a profound loss, our commitment – our plan – has not changed. As the Lord sustains this work, Grace to You will always and only distribute the Bible teaching of John MacArthur.'
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Patricia, along with four children, fifteen grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Bariatric Surgery: Who's Eligible Now?

This transcript has been edited for clarity. Bariatric surgery is a powerful tool for long-term weight loss, but it requires lifelong commitment to healthy eating, physical activity, supplements, and behavior change. When should you refer for bariatric surgery? The 2019 AACE/TOS/ASMBS guidelines recommend considering surgery for individuals with a BMI over 35 and at least one obesity-related condition — like type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, or hypertension — or anyone with a BMI over also note that patients with a BMI from 30 to 34.9 and poorly controlled type 2 diabetes may be considered. The updated 2022 ASMBS guidelines recommend expanding eligibility to include a BMI over 30with weight-related conditions, especially for Asian populations who experience metabolic risk at lower most insurance plans still only cover surgery for a BMI over 35 with associated conditions or a BMI over 40. Because long-term weight loss is difficult due to biologic adaptations, I offer surgery as an option to all eligible patients so they can make an informed choice. Surgery may be especially appropriate for patients who prefer surgery over lifelong obesity medications — though they'll still need lifelong vitamin supplementation — those who have not achieved long-term success with lifestyle interventions and/or obesity medications, or those who have higher BMI, for whom obesity medications and lifestyle modifications may not be sufficient to lead to resolution of weight-related complications. Importantly, this does not have to be an either/or patients benefit from a combination of bariatric surgery and obesity medications to achieve meaningful, lasting weight loss and improvements in health. As always, shared decision making is key, including a clear discussion of risks, benefits, alternatives, and patient goals.

How did John MacArthur die? What we know about pastor's cause of death

John MacArthur, the longtime pastor of a megachurch in Southern California and founder of a syndicated media ministry, died July 14 after being hospitalized with pneumonia. "Our hearts are heavy, yet rejoicing, as we share the news that our beloved pastor and teacher John MacArthur has entered into the presence of the Savior," MacArthur's media ministry, Grace to You, wrote on social media. "This evening, his faith became sight." MacArthur, 86, was the pastor at Grace Community Church, a nondenominational congregation in Sun Valley, California, a post he held since 1969. Tom Patton, another pastor at Grace Community Church, said at a July 13 service that MacArthur had been hospitalized after contracting pneumonia. USA TODAY has reached out to Grace Community Church. MacArthur's cause of death has not been announced, though he had been hospitalized with pneumonia in his final days, Patton said. "This week pastor John contracted pneumonia," Patton said. "He was admitted into the hospital and may be in the presence of the Lord soon." A message on Grace Community Church's website noted the same about MacArthur's condition. "Last week, Pastor John unexpectedly contracted pneumonia, and the Lord took him home on Monday, July 14," the message said. A message on Grace to You's website said MacArthur died "after dealing with some significant health challenges dating back to early 2023." "Just as the details of John's death are new to you, they are new to us as well. We probably have many of the same thoughts and feelings that you do," Grace to You's website said. USA TODAY has reached out to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's office for more information. Grace to You's website also said there are currently no details about services for MacArthur. John MacArthur was a pastor and author known for leading Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, and for his work with the media ministry Grace to You. He was also the longtime president and chancellor of The Master's University, a private Christian university in Santa Clarita, California, and founder of The Master's Seminary in Los Angeles. MacArthur became the pastor at Grace Community Church in 1969 after graduating from Talbot Theological Seminary in California, according to his leadership bio. Throughout his career, he also wrote nearly 400 books. Like some other preachers across the U.S., MacArthur entered the public spotlight during the COVID-19 pandemic when he hosted large gatherings despite local policies limiting congregations to small numbers outside. "At the center of Dr. MacArthur's ministry was an unwavering commitment to declare God's truth, and Pastor John preached the Word in season and out of season," Grace Community Church's website says. "Even in recent years, though beset with health challenges, he persisted in teaching, leading, and investing in the ministries the Lord had entrusted to him." In addition to his wife of 61 years, Patricia, MacArthur is survived by four children, fifteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
