‘Why are they in the box in the first place?': Ravi Shastri fumes after 5 balls fail gauge Test during IND vs ENG 3rd Test at Lord's

Indian Express2 days ago
As the controversy around the Dukes ball and its constant changes leading to slow over rates rumbles on Day 3 of the Lord's Test, Ravi Shastri in the commentary box was left livid due to another ball change during India's innings. The rules as it exists is that when a ball needs to be changed, the umpire slips the ball through a 'ball gauge'; if it slips through without an issue, the same ball is retained, and if it gets stuck, then the ball is changed.
Shastri's issue was that along with the process taking some significant of time, the box which contained the balls had five cherries which failed the gauge test, so the former India player asked why they were in the case in the first place.
'It's hard to explain. What's quite amazing is that they checked 5 balls there and five of them did not go through the ring so why are they in the box in the first place?,' Shastri said on commentary.
"What was that not decided at the start of the drinks break?" ⌚️
"It's common sense what you're saying. It's basic!" 🤷‍♂️ pic.twitter.com/Q431g2HpR1

In the last two Tests both India and England seamers have complained about the ball not swinging as much as it used to before and there have been also instances where they have requested for a ball change saying it gets softer way earlier than usual. While Day 1 of the third Test went without any drama with regards to the ball – it even swung late into second session, on Day 2 the same old issues cropped up.
India, which had taken the second new ball late on Day 1, took three wickets at the start of Day 2 with their seamers finding movement both ways. Jasprit Bumrah got one to nip back to take Ben Stokes off-stump while Joe Root and Chris Woakes too perished to deliveries that found movement before the umpires changed the new ball after Indian players seemed to have an issue with it. It isn't clear why India requested for a ball change when they were finding movement, but the replacement ball which was around 10 overs old, soon became problematic for India.
It appeared the ball was older than they thought, with the Indian players being visibly upset about its condition. Skipper Shubman Gill was seen having an animated discussion with Sharfudduola Saikat who asked India to carry on with the proceedings.
However, the new ball soon became a topic of discussion again. Before the 95th over began, with the seamers not finding any movement whatsoever, Gill would take the ball to Sharfudduola, asking for a change. It will lead to the Indian captain and the umpire having a heated discussion, and Sharfudduola was unmoved, gesturing India to resume the over. Mohammed Siraj too appeared miffed, walking up and asking the umpire, 'Are you serious,' which was picked up by the stump mics.

India vs England 3rd Test Day 5: Stokes, Archer rock India's chase at Lords

Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer—heroes of England's 2019 World Cup win on this very ground—returned to Lord's in Test whites to deliver another spellbinding performance. On Day 5 of the third Test, with India chasing 193 for victory, the duo turned up the heat just when it mattered most, pushing England closer to a memorable win. Five years ago, they won a title. Today, they're gunning for a Test match to remember. Check England vs India 3rd Test Day 5 live score and match updates here Pant, Rahul, Sundar fall as pressure mounts India's pursuit of a modest but tricky target unravelled in dramatic fashion during the morning session. Rishabh Pant was the first to go on Day 5, dismissed for 17 while visibly struggling with a left-hand issue. Archer bowled him with a searing delivery that jagged off the seam at 89mph—fast, furious, and unplayable. KL Rahul, who had looked the most composed of the Indian batters, followed soon after. With immaculate footwork and discipline, Rahul had resisted everything thrown at him. But it took something truly special to remove him—Stokes produced that magic. From well outside off, the ball seamed in sharply, drawing a defensive prod. After a long DRS consultation, all three lights turned red. The roar from the England huddle, led by a fist-pumping Stokes, told the story. Washington Sundar was next. Archer, full of fire, plucked a sensational one-handed return catch off his own bowling. Stokes raced in to embrace him, the pair celebrating with a ferocity that matched the stakes. India tumbled to 82 for 7. You cannot do that Jofra Archer! Out of this world ???? — England Cricket (@englandcricket) July 14, 2025 England returns the fire at Lord's India had once dished out '60 overs of hell' to England at this very venue. Today, it was England's turn. Every delivery was packed with hostility, and the intensity was palpable across the ground. From the slip cordon, Harry Brook was heard saying: 'Only a matter of time here, boys.' And England were playing like they believed it. Verbal volleys and visible tensions Archer, not typically known for his aggression, had plenty to say. After rattling Nitish Reddy with a hostile bouncer, he had a few words for the debutant. He did the same after removing Pant, making it clear that this wasn't just a cricket match—it was personal. The fiery undercurrent wasn't new. It had carried over from Day 3, when Shubman Gill and Zak Crawley's altercation lit the fuse. Siraj's animated send-off of Duckett had only intensified the mood. England were now dishing it back, blow for blow. Split screen angles just hit different with Jofra ???????? — England Cricket (@englandcricket) July 14, 2025 Stokes shows why he's irreplaceable Stokes' spell was more than just effective—it was symbolic. Having missed England's 2023 tour of India due to injury and undergoing hamstring surgery earlier this year, he is now back to full rhythm. With every sharp bouncer and seaming delivery, he looked like a man trying to reclaim the overs he'd been forced to sit out. This version of Stokes—aggressive, tactical, hungry—is what England had missed. Stumps knocked back! ???? And some chat ???? BIG wicket ☝ — England Cricket (@englandcricket) July 14, 2025 India under siege, but match not over yet Despite being 82 for 7, India are not out of it. But chasing 193 on a worn Lord's pitch against an inspired England attack has become a mountain. With every passing over, England's grip tightens and India's window narrows. From Pant's struggle to Rahul's resilience, from Stokes' roar to Archer's ice-cold fire, Day 5 at Lord's has delivered everything—except, as yet, a winner.

India should persist with Nitish, avoid temptation to chop and change: Kumble

'I was surprised at how well Nitish Kumar Reddy bowled. He consistently hit the right areas. That short ball down leg side was a gift, but otherwise, he was disciplined,' Kumble said of the seven-Test-old player on JioStar's 'Match Centre Live'. Reddy, playing his second game in the ongoing tour of England, was the most successful Indian bowler, picking up two wickets, on the opening day of the third Test here on Thursday. London, Jul 11 (PTI) Former India captain Anil Kumble says all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy should be a regular fixture in the national Test team as he has proved himself to be a fine mix of discipline and talent. 'I thought he did quite well in Australia – got a hundred with the bat and bowled decently even if he didn't take many wickets. What you need from someone like him is to break partnerships and give the fast bowlers a breather while still maintaining control. 'He bowled nearly 14 overs in a spell – that shows fitness and control. He's young, he's a capable batter with a century under his belt, and he's a sharp fielder. India should persist with him and avoid the temptation to chop and change,' added the leg-spin great. Kumble said the Lord's pitch was evidently tough for the batters as England were forced to abandon their aggressive style for a more reserved approach which yielded 251/4 on the opening day. 'It was evident right from the start that it was going to be a grind for the batters. The openers struggled to score off the new ball, and this was the kind of pitch where you had to work hard for your runs,' Kumble said. 'I thought the Indian bowlers bowled really good areas consistently and that's one of the reasons India managed to restrict England to 251. England will be fairly satisfied with just four wickets down. 'India will probably reflect tonight and feel that one or two more wickets could have put the match firmly in their favour. As it stands, it's evenly poised,' he added Former England player Jonathan Trott also noted the home team's change in strategy. 'It was an interesting day, starting right from the toss. England took a different approach compared to the first two Tests. I thought Ollie Pope (44) came out in typical 'Bazball' style — attacking early — but quickly realised that this wasn't that kind of pitch. Credit to him for adjusting his game. 'We also saw Joe Root look fluent — a beautiful cover drive and a clip through mid-wicket off Siraj stood out. Once he got going, it felt like he'd bat deep. I thought England might go after Jadeja in the final over of the day, but sense prevailed,' he said. PTI PM PM ATK ATK This report is auto-generated from PTI news service.
