League One player thinks he'd be playing regularly for Man Utd if he broke through now

Daily Mirror07-05-2025
An out-of-contract League One footballer has claimed he would be playing as part of Manchester United's struggling first team now had he been born a few years earlier
A League One player has boldly claimed he would be in Manchester United's first team now if he'd been born a decade years earlier. Demetri Mitchell, 28, has just helped Exeter City to a 16th-place finish in the third tier, having left United in 2020.
Ruben Amorim's side are only just higher in the Premier League, sitting 15th in the table ahead of the final three games. However, they could still end a trying campaign with silverware as they are on the brink of reaching the Europa League final.

United are in a dominant position after the first leg of their semi-final against Athletic Bilbao following a surprise 3-0 win in the Basque Country. Despite that, Mitchell is convinced he would be getting plenty of game time with the senior squad if he had been coming up through the ranks today.

"I reckon if I broke through during this era of Man United I'd be a first team regular," he claimed on X. And judging by his follow-up comments, he was being deadly serious.
When quizzed about his preferred position on the pitch, the he said: "Wing back. Not saying I'd play every game, but I'd be a first team regular probs squad player."
He further explained that he wouldn't stand a chance at that level in his current condition. However, he was certain that his 20-year-old self could've made the grade.
"No not now [it] would take me too long to adapt," he wrote in another reply. "When your [sic] 20 and in a Premier League environment the amount you learn in such a short period is vast as well as the facilities etc.
"There's lads that could [have] made it that never got the chance and their [sic] not even playing now more talented than myself."

Some fans pointed out that current left-backs like Patrick Dorgu or Harry Amass might block his path to the first team. But having witnessed the current state of affairs at Old Trafford, he seems to fancy his odds.
Mitchell had his first taste of senior United action in a 2-0 Premier League victory over Crystal Palace on the last day of the 2016/17 season.
He later had two loan spells at Hearts before making a permanent switch to Blackpool in summer 2020. He then moved to Hibernian in January 2022 before joining Exeter a year later.
The former England Under-20 star's contract with the Grecians is set to run out this summer. He hasn't been offered a new deal but has been invited to return for pre-season training.

Former Man Utd midfielder Darren Fletcher takes charge of club's under-18s

Former Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher has been named as the lead coach of the club's under-18s side. Fletcher, who spent more than 20 years at the club as a player, has held numerous roles at United in recent years. He was appointed technical director in March 2021 before joining then-manager Erik ten Hag's coaching staff after the arrival of Jason Wilcox last year, continuing to work with the first team under Ruben Amorim. 🆕 Darren Fletcher has been named as our Under-18s lead coach. — Manchester United (@ManUtd) July 14, 2025 The former Scotland international has recently been working as a bridge between the academy and the first team, but will now focus full-time on the development of United's next generation. 'I am really excited to take on this new role and increase my responsibility to directly develop our young players,' the 41-year-old said. 'I'm looking forward to working with such a talented age group; supporting them to reach their potential and preparing them to enjoy careers at the highest level possible.' Fletcher came through the United Academy himself before going on to make more than 340 appearances for the club, winning five Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup, Club World Cup and two League Cups. His twin sons Tyler and Jack recently graduated from United's under-18s to the under-21 set-up. Director of football Wilcox said Fletcher was the ideal man for the under-18s role. 'He knows exactly what it takes to be a successful Academy graduate and has played a key role in shaping the pathway for so many of our young players in recent years,' Wilcox said. 'Darren's excellent relationships across the entire staff will only increase the strong connection between the Academy and first team, further enhancing our ability to produce world-class players ready to excel at Manchester United.' Fletcher replaces Adam Lawrence, who left the club at the end of last season as part of a wider shake-up at youth level following the exit of Academy boss Nick Cox, who has joined Everton. Fletcher has started in his new role with immediate effect, taking charge of a training camp in Germany and a friendly against QPR at Carrington.

Dusan Vlahovic makes decision on joining Man Utd on free transfer

Dusan Vlahovic's stance on joining Manchester United has reportedly been revealed, with the striker poised to rip up his Juventus contract. Following their worst Premier League season in history, Ruben Amorim is overhauling United's attack this summer in a bid to get them back on track. Forwards Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Jadon Sancho have all been told they can leave Old Trafford, though it is proving difficult to sell them. In terms of incomings, Matheus Cunha has joined from Wolves for £62.5million while the club are still working on a deal for Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo. A new No.9 is also desired after Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee scored just seven Premier League goals between then last season. Given financial restrictions, United are looking for a bargain option in the transfer market and may have found it in the form of Vlahovic who has entered the last year of his contract and wants to leave Juventus. But the 25-year-old could soon become a free agent, with the Serie A giants willing to terminate his contract early and offload his expensive salary. United and AC Milan are interested in the Serbian's services and it is said he has a preference between the two. And it's bad news for the Red Devils as The Sun report that Vlahovic would favour a move to the San Siro where he would reunite with former Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri. After breaking through at Fiorentina, much was expected of Vlahovic when he moved to the Old Lady in 2022 in a transfer worth over £72m. Appearances: 145 Goals: 58 Assists: 14 Trophies: Coppa Italia While hardly a flop, the striker hasn't hit the heights many thought he would, yet he still finished last season with 17 goals in 44 appearances, and has 14 goals in just 36 caps for his country. Former Juventus and Serbia striker Darko Kovacevic believes both Manchester and Milan would be great destinations for Vlahovic should he depart Turin this summer. More Trending 'I'd tell Dusan to move right away. It's not easy to leave Juventus, and I say that from personal experience,' Kovacevic, currently sporting director at Olympiakos, told Italian outlet Gazzetta. 'However, sometimes you need to challenge yourself again to be happy and reach the top level. Someone like Vlahovic should always be a starter, whether at Juventus or elsewhere. 'We can't afford him at Olympiakos, but Milan or Manchester United could be good options for Dusan. 'Maybe even Nottingham Forest. Just joking, we share the same ownership, but I only work for Olympiakos.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
