Ukraine installs anti-drone nets over roads to protect frontline supply routes
Hit by a small, remote-controlled drone, the mangled chassis was a stark reminder of why Ukraine is hurrying to mount netting over supply routes behind the sprawling front line to thwart Russian aerial attacks.
As Russia's invasion grinds through its fourth year, Moscow and Kyiv are both menacing each other's armies with swarms of cheap drones, easily found on the market and rigged with deadly explosives.
Agence France-Presse reporters saw Ukrainian soldiers installing green nets on four-metre (13-foot) poles spanning kilometres of road in the eastern Donetsk region, where some of the war's most intense fighting has taken place.

'When a drone hits the net, it short-circuits and it cannot target vehicles,' said 27-year-old engineering brigade commander Denis, working under the blazing sun.

Russian strike on Ukraine prison kills 17 as Trump issues Putin ultimatum
Russian strikes on a penal colony in the frontline region of Zaporizhzhia in southwestern Ukraine overnight killed at least 17 people and wounded more than 80 others, regional Ukrainian military and Zaporizhzhia's governor said on Tuesday. Zaporizhzhia governor Ivan Fedorov, writing on the Telegram messaging app, said that the correctional facility's buildings were destroyed, and nearby private homes were also damaged. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky 's chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, condemned the strikes as 'another war crime' committed by Russia. '[Russian President Vladimir] Putin 's regime, which also issues threats against the United States through some of its mouthpieces, must face economic and military blows that strip it of the capacity to wage war,' Yermak said on social media. The attack late on Monday hit the Bilenkivska Correctional Colony with four guided aerial bombs, according to the State Criminal Executive Service of Ukraine. At least 42 inmates were hospitalised with serious injuries, while another 40 people, including one staff member, sustained various injuries. The strike destroyed the prison's dining hall, damaged administrative and quarantine buildings, but the perimeter fence held and no escapes were reported, authorities said.

Russian ex-president Medvedev says Trump's Ukraine ‘ultimatum' could lead to war
Former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev said on Monday that US President Donald Trump was playing 'the ultimatum game' with Russia and that such an approach could lead to a war involving the United States. 'Each new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war. Not between Russia and Ukraine, but with [Trump's] own country,' Medvedev wrote in a post on social media. Medvedev, deputy chairman of Russia's security council, also said Trump should remember that Russia is not Israel or Iran. Trump said on Monday that he was disappointed in Russian President Vladimir Putin's failure to end the war in Ukraine and that he was reducing a deadline to agree a peace settlement from 50 days to 10 or 12. Also on Monday, Medvedev said a framework trade agreement struck between the European Union and the United States was 'anti-Russian' likening it to a de facto ban on buying Russian oil and gas. The US struck the deal with the EU on Sunday, imposing a 15 per cent import tariff on most EU goods. Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, said in a statement afterwards that the agreement would help the bloc fully phase out Russian fossil fuels in favour of American alternatives.

Trump says to cut 50-day deadline for Russia to end Ukraine war
US President Donald Trump has said he intends to shorten the 50-day deadline he gave Russian leader Vladimir Putin to reach a deal that ends the three-year war in Ukraine. His announcement on Monday came as Russia fired an overnight barrage at Ukraine of more than 300 drones, four cruise missiles and three ballistic missiles, the Ukrainian air force said. Trump said two weeks ago he would implement 'severe tariffs' on Russia unless a peace deal could be reached by early September, as he expressed exasperation with Putin over the bombardment of Ukrainian cities amid the US leader's attempts to stop the fighting. Trump said he would give Putin 10 to 12 days from Monday, meaning he wants peace efforts to make progress by August 7 to 9. The plan includes possible sanctions and secondary tariffs targeting Russia's trading partners. The formal announcement would come later on Monday or on Tuesday, he said. 'No reason in waiting,' Trump said of the shorter timeline. 'We just don't see any progress being made.' Putin has 'got to make a deal. Too many people are dying', Trump said during a visit to Scotland.
