(Reuters) -Brazil's 39-year-old forward Marta said it was 'too early to tell' whether she would play in her home 2027 World Cup, as the six-time FIFA Women's Player of the Year considers balancing her dream of becoming a mother with extending her career.
Marta told Globo's Esporte Espetacular on Sunday that while playing in the tournament remains a possibility, her desire to have a child could ultimately decide her future.
"I don't know whether I'll still be playing in 2027 or whether I'll be fit," Marta said.
"It's too early to say that I'm definitely going to play, I still have a very strong desire to be a mother. So, I might wake up one day and decide to call my doctor to see if it's still possible. If it is, then bye, I have to go," she added.
The veteran forward, who has played in six World Cups without winning the title, added that, regardless of her participation, she hopes Brazil will have a memorable tournament.
"I hope that Brazil can uphold its tradition of throwing a beautiful party, enjoying the moment and welcoming people warmly. This competition is unique for our continent and South America."
With her contract with the National Women's Soccer League side Orlando Pride running until 2026, Marta is currently focusing on helping Brazil win the Copa America.
"Brazil is the favourite, and we know it. We know our responsibility to bring home the title. But it's no use just being the favourite if you don't perform and make things happen on the pitch," she added.
Brazil, in Group B, will kick off their Copa America campaign against Venezuela on Sunday, seeking their ninth title.

Time for others to fear Italy, says Serturini

OBERENTFELDEN, Switzerland: Italy might be heading into their Women's Euro semi-final against reigning champions England as underdogs on Tuesday, but the squad believe that they have earned the right to be feared by the other teams remaining in the competition. The Italians scored a late winner to beat Norway 2-1 in their quarter-final to make it into the last four of the tournament for the first time since 1997, setting up the meeting with England in Geneva on Tuesday. Germany and Spain face off in Zurich a day later. "It's not a coincidence to be among the top four in Europe. The path we took with (coach) Mr. (Andrea) Soncin is very important. He brought us so much tranquility, enthusiasm and security," midfielder Annamaria Serturini told reporters on Sunday. "I think we can see how much the group can make a difference, and today I tell you that if we are there, it is because we deserve it ... it is not a coincidence if we are there, so I welcome that the other teams start to fear us." The 27-year-old said that the sense of unity in the squad had filled them with confidence as they prepare to take on an England side that squeezed past Sweden and into the semi-finals after a dramatic penalty shootout. "We have the possibility to make everyone believe in us," Serturini said. "We have a great goal that we are all aware of, so we don't have a lot of pressure, because it's right to live, to enjoy every moment and every training, because it's really something magnificent to go through every day with all the people who are here." To succeed against England, Serturini said that Italy will have to make the most of their chances. "When we approach a semi-final or a final, it is difficult to get many opportunities, but those few that you have, you have to be able to convert them, because we know their value," she explained. — REUTERS

Bublik, the second seed, won his sixth tour title at the ATP 250 event in the Swiss Alps, in his first final on clay courts. It also was his first meeting with Argentina's Cerundolo. Nordea Open No. 6 seed Luciano Darderi of Italy captured the championship in Bastad, Sweden, with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win over unseeded Dutchman Jesper De Jong. De Jong was in search of his first career ATP Tour title. It was the third for Darderi, all on clay. He won at Marrakech, Morocco, earlier this season and in Cordoba, Argentina, in 2024 Darderi won 81 percent (38-of-47) of the points on his first serve and converted three break points, compared to two for De Jong. In the end, just three points separated the two, with Darderi winning 80 and De Jong 77. Plava Laguna Croatia Open The first round in Umag, Croatia, began Sunday with a pair of three-set matches. Racism has increased in women's football as the game has grown, says Bronze

ZURICH: England defender Lucy Bronze said the growth of women's football had led to an increase in racist abuse towards players as the game draws more and more fans and the spotlight is amplified. Bronze, who was key to England's quarter-final victory over Sweden at Euro 2025 on Thursday, held an emotional press conference after teammate Jess Carter, who is Black, announced she had been the target of racist abuse since the tournament began. "The bigger the game gets, the bigger the noise becomes, the more fans there are, but the more critics there are," Bronze said. "We're obviously open to critics - that's why we love the sport - but we're not open to abuse. Especially in women's football, the online abuse seems to be getting worse and worse. "We see it more in the stadiums in men's football and online, but I think with women's football there seems to be a real target online. "It's something that we're very aware of. There is a way to make a change. There is a solution. I don't have the answer, but I'm sure that there is one." Bronze was asked whether the abuse Carter had received would make other young Black players think twice about playing for England. "I hope that those players know that no matter what they go through, they'll be supported by this team, that we don't condone these actions, that we want to stand up for change, not just in football, but in society, that those young players can grow up and be heroes and legends of an England team," she said. "We are creating an environment where those players can thrive, be who they want to be, you can come from any background, any environment, and you can represent England as the highest stage."
