What's the Panthers' playoff record based on who bangs the drum? A team-by-team breakdown
It started with former Panthers forward Billy Lindsay, an original Panther who was part of Florida's first ever Cup Final team in 1996 and is now part of the team's radio broadcast, banging the drum ahead of Game 6 in the first-round against the Boston Bruins in 2023. It has continued ever since, with 29 total pregame performances.
The stars have done their job of hyping up the crowd pregame. Perhaps no one did it bigger than when former Panthers goaltender Roberto Luongo put up an emphatic performance ahead of Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Edmonton Oilers last season, a game Florida eventually won 2-1 for its first Stanley Cup in franchise history.
With the Panthers once again in position to win a championship, up 3-2 on the Oilers entering Game 6 of their Cup Final rematch on Tuesday, expect a big name to get the Amerant Bank Arena crowd going before the 8 p.m. puck drop.
But who? The Panthers haven't said directly, although Luongo posted a GIF on his personal X (formerly Twitter) account Monday of Will Ferrell from the movie 'Step Brothers' banging on a drum set with the caption 'Warming up in the bullpen.'
But beyond the star power attention, is there a trend with how the Panthers fare on the ice based on the team with whom the drum banger is affiliated?
Let's get this out of the way early: No, the Miami Dolphins are not a curse for the Panthers as some fans are posturing on social media. People with Dolphins ties have made nine appearances banging the drum prior to a Panthers playoff game over the past three years, and Florida has gone 6-3 in that stretch — including 2-1 in the Stanley Cup Final. Granted, two of those losses have come in their past two appearances, with current defensive lineman Zach Sieler in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference final and Hall of Fame defensive lineman Jason Taylor in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final this year.
In fact, here is how the Panthers' win-loss record breaks down based on the team the person banging the drum is affiliated with (with one-offs or people not affiliated one of South Florida's professional sports teams lumped together):
▪ Miami Heat: 4-0 — Udonis Haslem, Goran Dragic, Alonzo Mourning and Bam Adebayo.
▪ Florida Panthers: 3-0 — Lindsay in Game 6 of Round 1 against Boston in 2023, Luongo in Game 7 of the 2024 Cup Final and Keith Yandle in Game 3 of the second round against Toronto in 2025.
▪ Miami Marlins: 3-1 — wins with Jeff Conine, Juan Pierre and Livan Hernandez; a loss with Charles Johnson.
▪ Miami Dolphins: 6-3 — wins with Mike McDainiel (twice), Dan Marino, Jalen Ramsey, Jaylen Waddle and Jonnu Smith; losses with Raheem Mostert, Sieler and Taylor.
▪ Miscellaneous: 3-3 — wins with UFC fighter Kamaru Usman, social media personalities A.J. and Big Justice, and rapper Trick Daddy; losses with NFL players Mike White and Mark Ingram plus drummer Jason Bonham
▪ Golfers: 0-2 — Jack Nicklaus did it in the 2024 Cup Final and Brooks Koepka in the 2023 Cup Final, with Florida falling in both games.
▪ Inter Miami: 0-1 — midfielder Benjamin Cremaschi is Inter Miami's lone representative here, banging the drum before Game 3 of Round 1 against the Tampa Bay Lightning this year.

Former Buffalo Bills star said no to Dolphins contract offer
The Buffalo Bills traded for cornerback Rasul Douglas back in 2023 ahead of the trade deadline, and he immediately made an impact on their defense. He picked off four passes after joining the Bills. In 2024, he started 15 games for Buffalo. He remains a free agent after going unsigned all offseason. Even though Douglas is no longer a Bill, he seems to still have distain for their division-rivals. Per CBS NFL insider Josina Anderson, Douglas turned down an offer from the Miami Dolphins. "I'm also told free agent cornerback Rasul Douglas didn't move on an offer from the Miami Dolphins Thursday," Anderson posted on X. "Douglas continues to field interest from multiple teams, per league source." The Dolphins traded away Jalen Ramsey and Jonnu Smith, and have developed somewhat of a bad reputation from veteran players over the course of the Mike McDaniel era. Inter Miami blasts MLS for ‘draconian' suspension of Lionel Messi
Inter Miami CF is furious about the suspension of two key players. Both Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba will be forced to miss one game after sitting out of the MLS All-Star Game, and the club's co-owner, Jorge Mas, did not hold back when talking about how Inter Miami felt about the punishment. 3 Jorge Mas Santos, owner of Inter Miami CF looks on prior to the MLS match between Inter Miami CF and Nashville SC at Chase Stadium on July 12, 2025 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Getty Images 'Lionel Messi is very upset, like we all are in the club, with the fact that they won't be able to play tomorrow night. But I think what we have to do as a club is to get together as one, have an attitude that is us against the world,' Mas said at a news conference Friday. Inter Miami confirmed that the players did not decide to sit out the game but that the club made the call due to the number of games that were played in quick succession. The team played nine games in just 36 days. 'I think that the punishment for the rule is frankly draconian,' Mas said. That's what they're here for — to play and win. They understand the magnitude of tomorrow night's game.' The club said that if it finds itself in the same predicament again next year, the decision would not change, and they would rest whoever is an all-star at the time. MLS commissioner Don Garber said the league will take 'a hard look at the policy moving forward.' 3 MLS Commissioner Don Garber smiles prior to the 2025 MLS All-Star Game at Q2 Stadium on July 23, 2025 in Austin, Texas. Despite Messi and Inter Miami currently sitting fifth in the Eastern Conference, they are only six points behind first-place Cincinnati.

Panthers sign rookie pass rusher, release 2022 draft pick
After making an adjustment to the cornerback position on Friday afternoon, the Carolina Panthers went on to do the same at outside linebacker just a few hours later. The Panthers have signed undrafted rookie outside linebacker J.J. Weaver, one of 14 players who worked out for the team this past Monday. To make room for the 25-year-old, Carolina released fellow pass rusher Amaré Barno—a sixth-round pick from the 2022 draft. Weaver played six years at the University of Kentucky, where he amassed 21.5 sacks and 41 tackles for a loss over 58 games. The 6-foot-5, 241-pounder also tallied two interceptions, five forced fumbles and six fumble recoveries. He'll now take the spot on the summer roster in place of Barno, who has spent each of his three NFL seasons in Carolina. Barno, limited in part by a knee injury he sustained in 2023, recorded 3.0 sacks in 29 appearances for the article originally appeared on Panthers Wire: Panthers sign OLB J.J.
