Carry-On Director Jaume Collet-Serra Finds Next Project in Thriller Movie Play Dead

Carry-On director has found his next project.
Collet-Serra recently directed Carry-On, the hit Netflix movie that stars Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman. He's also worked with Liam Neeson on a number of movies, including 2011's Unknown, 2014's Non-Stop, and more.
Per Deadline, Collet-Serra has now been tapped to helm a new survival thriller movie titled Play Dead.
Plot details for Play Dead remain under wraps at this time; however, Deadline's sources described the movie as 'Don't Breathe meets 1917.' The former title is the 2016 horror movie directed by Fede Álvarez, while the latter is the war movie from Sam Mendes that was released in 2019.
The script comes from Peter Stanley-Ward & Natalie Conway. Akiva Nemetsky and Keaton Heinrichs are producing the film for Nocturnal alongside Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert for Ghost House Pictures, JD Lifshitz and Raphael Margules for BoulderLight Pictures, and Dane Eckerle for Bad Grey. Scott Greenberg serves as an executive producer.
Collet-Serra made his feature film directorial debut in 2005 with House of Wax. He followed that up with 2007's Goal II: Living the Dream and 2009's Orphan before he then went on to helm Unknown and Non-Stop.
He then reteamed with Neeson again for 2015's Run All Night before directing Blake Lively in 2016's The Shallows. Following that was another Neeson action movie, 2018's The Commuter. After that, he worked with Dwayne Johnson on two movies: 2021's Jungle Cruise and 2022's Black Adam.
Prior to Stay Dead, Collet-Serra's The Woman in the Yard is releasing in United States theaters on March 28, 2025. That movie is a psychological horror film that stars Danielle Deadwyler, Okwui Okpokwasili, and Russell Hornsby. Additionally, Collet-Serra has been tapped to direct a reboot of 1993's Cliffhanger starring Lily James and Pierce Brosnan.
A release date for Play Dead has not yet been announced.

We're Not Getting Another Season of 'Squid Game' — But We Might Get A Spinoff

Now that Squid Game's third and final season is out in the world, I am personally hoping for one thing: that Hwang Dong-hyuk can get some rest. The filmmaker and series creator has not been subtle about his exhaustion after creating the first season of the Netflix sensation. Imagine how he feels now, two seasons after that. 'Yeah, I'm very tired. I haven't had a deep sleep for a long time. I want to take a rest,' he told The New York Times before the season three premiere. 'Then I want to do feature films. I have an idea for my next feature.' There may be someone ready to take up the mantle: David Fincher, the director of Fight Club, Gone Girl, and The Social Network. In October 2024, Deadline reported that the filmmaker was eyeing an English-language offshoot of Squid Game, although neither he nor Netflix have confirmed the news yet. Still, it seems likely, given Fincher's ongoing collaboration with the streamer, which includes films and series like House of Cards, Mindhunter, Mank, and the upcoming Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood sequel. According to Deadline, 'Insiders say the Squid Game series is likely the project Fincher commits his time to in 2025.' The final scene of the Squid Game season three sure seems to set up an spinoff. (Warning: Spoilers ahead!) The episode closes with a scene of the Front Man in the U.S. coming across a person in a suit playing a version of Ddakji, the 'slap game' used to recruit players, with a disheveled man in an alley. When the recruiter turns around, it's a surprise reveal: She's played by Cate Blanchett. All she does is exchange a knowing look at the Front Man, their mutual recognition hinting that the Squid Game operation extends beyond South Korea. It's also the perfect setup for a U.S.-based spinoff. It's unclear if Blanchett will be the lead of that new show or just a one-time cameo, but the former is possible, since she previously worked with Fincher on The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. For now though, that's just a theory. No casting announcements have been made yet. As for the creative team, Deadline reported that Dennis Kelly, writer of Matilda the Musical and the TV series Utopia, is supposedly writing the script. Hwang has also voiced his own ideas for an offshoot. He told Entertainment Weekly, 'I actually had this faint ideation about possibly a spinoff—not a sequel, but maybe a spinoff about the three-year gap between season one and season two when Gi-hun [Lee Jung-jae] looks around for the recruiters,' he said. 'Maybe I could have a portrayal of what the recruiters or Captain Park [Oh Dal-su] or officers or masked men were doing in that period, not inside the gaming arena, but their life outside of that.' That Hwang's limited series has now ballooned into an international franchise might be a little ironic, considering the show's pointed critiques of capitalism. But he hopes that at least it gets viewers to start thinking about such issues. 'If they do none of that and only enjoy the goods and experiences, that could be a problem. But as long as it entails food for thought, I'm good with that,' he told Times. And if Squid Game goes to America, there will surely be much to discuss. What to watch on Netflix Canada: New TV shows and movies, plus what's being removed in July 2025

There's no better way to beat the summer heat than having a binge-watch session or a movie marathon, and Netflix Canada has a lot to offer in July. Several new TV shows and movies being released are incredibly exciting, but it's also your last change to watch some favourites before they're removed from the streaming site next month. Field of Dreams, starring Kevin Costner, the late James Earl Jones and Ray Liotta, and a young Gaby Hoffmann, will only be available to watch on Netflix until June 20. Additionally, the 2022 documentary Shania Twain: Not Just A Girl will be removed from the platform on July 25. For comedy fans, Neighbors with Seth Rogen, Zach Efron and Rose Byrne, Step Brothers starring Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, She's All That with Rachael Leigh Cook and Freddie Prinze Jr., and She's Out of My League starring Jay Baruchel and Alice Eve are all being removed from Netflix in July. Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning is also leaving Netflix, along with The Northman, Johnny Depp's 2009 film Public Enemies, and the 1987 movie 84 Charing Cross Road, starring Anthony Hopkins, Judi Dench and the late Anne Bancroft. Victoria Mahoney, notably the first woman to direct a Star Wars film, has now she's taken on the sequel to The Old Guard. Charlize Theron is back as Andromache of Scythia, aka Andy, along with her team of immortals as she faces a reunion with Quyhn (Veronica Van), who's out for revenge after being trapped in an iron maiden. The cast is also joined by Uma Thurman and Henry Golding in the continuation of this thrilling story. The second and final season of The Sandman will be released in three parts, starting with six episodes on July 3, then episodes seven to 11 will arrive on Netflix July 24, followed by the finale on July 31. It begins just weeks after the end of the first season, as Dream (Tom Sturridge) is working to restore his kingdom. "Dream must confront longtime friends and foes, gods, monsters, and mortals. But the path to forgiveness is full of unexpected twists and turns, and true absolution may cost Dream everything," the synopsis for the season reads. Variety confirmed the show was coming to an end in January, shortly after several sexual misconduct allegations where made against writer Neil Gaiman, but the publication identified that the series was set to be only two seasons prior to filming in 2023. Starring Megan Stalter, written and directed by Lena Dunham, the highly-anticipated series Too Much premieres next month. The show follows Jessica (Stalter), a New York workaholic in her 30s who's "reeling" from a breakup, and she decides the best decision is to take a job in London. But then she has a connection with Felix (Will Sharpe), described as "a walking series of red flags," creating more problems for Jessica than solutions. Eric Bana plays Kyle Turner in Untamed, an Investigative Services Branch agent of the National Parks Service who's on the hunt for a killer on the grounds of Yosemite. Turner is accompanied by Naya Vasquez (Lily Santiago), a rookie park ranger. Rosemarie DeWitt plays Turner's ex-wife, a former teacher and park counsellor, who's still connected to her ex-husband due to significant events in their pasts. The wait is almost over for Adam Sandler's Happy Gilmore 2, nearly 30 years after the original movie was released in 1996. The film begins as Happy has retired from golf, but financial struggle brings him back to the sport. The cast of Happy Gilmore 2 also includes Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio aka Bad Bunny, Travis Kelce, Sadie and Sunny Sandler, Blake Clark, Jackie Sandler, Eric André, Margaret Qualley, and many more stars. Leanne Morgan stars in and co-created her own scripted comedy series, inspired by her stand-up. The show begins as the title character's husband of 33 years leaves her for another woman, leading to her unexpected "new start" as a grandmother in menopause. Kristen Johnston, Graham Rogers, Hannah Pilkes, Ryan Stiles, Celia Weston and Blake Clark all appear on the show. Watch TV shows, movies on Netflix 84 Charing Cross Road 10,000 B.C. Netflix drops first look at new thriller series with Jude Law and Jason Bateman — and it's already on my must-binge list

Netflix is adding a dark, family‑fueled entry to your early fall line‑up this year. The streaming service has just released first‑look images and confirmed a September 18 premiere date for 'Black Rabbit,' an eight‑part thriller series headlined by Jude Law and Jason Bateman. I haven't delved into many sibling dramas before, but 'Black Rabbit' (taking place amid the gritty New York nightlife scene) has already shot onto my must-watch list based on the premise alone. In fact, I wrote about it back in February as one of the new Netflix shows I'm most excited to binge in 2025. 'Black Rabbit' follows the story of the proprietor of New York's most sought-after restaurant, who welcomes his troubled brother back into the fold, only to unleash buried wounds and new threats that put their entire empire at risk. You can never really go wrong with sizzling character drama. The Tudum reveal teases a 'propulsive thrill ride' woven with deep family tensions, and it almost gives me darker 'Succession' meets 'The Bear' vibes. Bateman, who also directs the first couple of episodes, undergoes a dramatic transformation into the scruffy, self‑destructive Vince, trading his composed 'Ozark' persona for something a bit more unpredictable. Netflix hasn't released a trailer yet since it's still a few months away, but judging by the stylish first look and the strong lead pairing, 'Black Rabbit' already feels like a compelling watch that most viewers will probably eat up come September. Along with the first-look images, Netflix also teased the story in a full synopsis: 'Set against the backdrop of New York City's high-pressure nightlife scene, Black Rabbit centers on two brothers who are pushed to the brink by their duty to family and their pursuit of success. 'Jake Friedken (Jude Law) is the charismatic owner of Black Rabbit, a restaurant and VIP lounge, poised to become the hottest spot in New York. But when his brother, Vince (Jason Bateman), returns to the business unexpectedly, trouble soon follows; opening the door to old traumas and new dangers that threaten to bring down everything they've built. Black Rabbit is a propulsive thrill ride and character examination about the way an unbreakable bond between two brothers can shatter their world and everything in its orbit.' Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Law (who also serves as an executive producer alongside Bateman and creators Zach Baylin and Kate Susman) played a key role behind the scenes as well as on screen. He told Tudum: 'At the heart, I hope [audiences] are hooked by the complicated, loving, volatile relationship of these two brothers.' Bateman added: 'It's really about these brothers who love each other but don't match — one's a screw-up, and the other is much more buttoned up. Everybody can relate to that. Everybody's either got a sibling, or a friendship where you love being with one another, but it's kind of dangerous; where that person usually gets you in trouble, but they're really exciting to be around.' The cast doesn't stop with the leads: Cleopatra Coleman, Amaka Okafor, Troy Kotsur, Odessa Young, and more round out this ensemble, lending richness to the darker corners of the city. In this upcoming thriller, it seems like the brothers are bound by one thing: Black Rabbit, the Manhattan restaurant they built together. According to co-creator Zach Baylin, he and fellow creator Kate Susman were drawn to the idea of a restaurant as the heartbeat of a city — a place where all kinds of people intersect and where, for some, it even 'feels like a second home.' As mentioned earlier, sibling dramas aren't usually at the top of my list, but 'Black Rabbit' has definitely piqued my curiosity. And honestly, that might just be down to seeing Bateman and Law playing completely against type. Whatever it is, I'm already intrigued (and still waiting on a trailer!). With just eight episodes, this one feels like it could easily climb to No. 1 on Netflix when it drops. 'Black Rabbit' debuts on Netflix on September 18. In the meantime, see what's being added to Netflix in July 2025.
