Canadian teen Mboko through to second round at Citi Open with win over Potapova
Mboko, a 19-year-old from Toronto, won 62.7 per cent of total service points compared to 50 per cent for Potapova.
The Canadian had 13 break point chances against Potapova and converted five of them, the last coming in the deciding game. Potapova scored two breaks on six chances.
Mboko, who entered Washington with a career-high ranking of 86, will next face No. 12 Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan at the WTA 500 tournament.
Mboko, who has played both at the WTA Tour level and on the lower-tier ITF World Tennis Tour circuit this year, improved her record this season to 46-8.
She posted her fourth win of the season against a top-50 opponent as she prepares for her main-draw debut at the upcoming WTA 1000-level National Bank Open in Montreal.
Later Monday, Leylah Fernandez of Laval, Que., faced Australia's Maya Joint. In first-round doubles action, Eugenie Bouchard of Westmount, Que., was set to team with Clervie Ngounoue of the United States in a match against the American duo of Venus Williams and Hailey Baptiste.
The 31-year-old Bouchard, a former world No. 5 and a Wimbledon finalist in 2014, is playing in her second-last tournament after announcing last week that she will retire after the National Bank Open.

The CFL club announced Tuesday that it has signed Brown and Canadian long snapper Simon Chaves and released veteran defensive back Branden Dozier. The 28-year-old Brown played three games with the Argos this season, recording 18 carries for 37 yards and a touchdown. He previously played with Edmonton, and had his best season in 2023 when he rushed for 1,141 yards and four touchdowns while catching 28 passes for 222 yards and a TD. He has rushed for 2,186 yards and six touchdowns and put up 568 receiving yards and a touchdown over 40 career CFL games with Edmonton and Toronto. CF Montreal profits from Philadelphia Union transfer deal for forward Milan Iloski
PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia Union acquired striker Milan Iloski from Denmark's FC Nordsjælland on Tuesday in a deal that netted CF Montreal up to US$250,000 (all figures in U.S. dollars) in general allocation money. Montreal was involved because it held the first overall spot in the MLS waiver order, allowing the Union to sign Iloski. Philadelphia sent the Canadian side its 21st spot in the waiver order. Montreal acquired $100,000 in 2025 general allocation money and up to $150,000 in conditional GAM. Philadelphia, which hosts Toronto FC in league play Saturday, has signed Iloski through 2027 with an option for 2028.
