Fadillah: Sarawak now leading investment destination
KUCHING (July 13): Sarawak has emerged as a leading destination for both domestic and international investment, driven by visionary state leadership, investor-friendly policies, and strong political stability, said Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.
The Deputy Prime Minister said while representing Malaysia at the recent Osaka Expo 2025, he witnessed firsthand how Sarawak is drawing significant interest from international investors, including those from Japan, China and Europe.
'They view Sarawak as a rapidly developing state with a well-educated, high-quality and friendly population,' he said during the Petra Jaya-level Premier Arts and Cultural Night 2025 here on Saturday night.
The Petra Jaya MP, said admiration for the state's progress is growing not only among private sector stakeholders, but also political leaders from Singapore and Peninsular Malaysia who now look to Sarawak as a model of development.
Referring to investment-related policies such as the RM2 million deposit requirement for permanent residency and business establishment in the state, he said some had even asked him how they could 'become Sarawakians'.
Fadillah also highlighted the uniqueness of Sarawak's leadership, which has successfully introduced forward-thinking strategies in various sectors, including digital economy, renewable energy, hydrogen and ammonia production, as well as educational development.
'Other states have yet to introduce innovations like Sarawak Pay (S Pay Global) or provide free (tertiary) education for their children. We are already moving in that direction, guided by policies rooted in people's welfare and long-term progress.'
According to him, investors are not solely attracted to economic opportunities, but also value the distinct social fabric of Sarawak, particularly its unity across ethnicities and religions, and a high level of tolerance.
'All of this contributes to a stable investment climate, which has become Sarawak's competitive edge on the global stage. It is a strength we must continue to uphold,' he said. fadillah yusof foreign investment Sarawak investment stability

Seven projects to boost power supply in Sabah, Labuan
Fadillah during his visit to the PMU 132/33kV Kota Kinabalu. KOTA KINABALU (July 14): More than 60,434 users in Sabah and the Federal Territory of Labuan will benefit from a more stable and efficient electricity supply following the completion of seven major energy projects by the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (PETRA), worth over RM260.7 million. The projects include substation upgrades, new grid line installations, and advanced safety monitoring systems, covering key areas such as Tanjung Aru, Ranau, Batu Sapi and Labuan. Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister Dato' Sri Haji Fadillah Haji Yusof officiated the handover ceremony during PETRA's Sabah Squad 2025 visit to the Kota Kinabalu 132/33kV Main Intake Substation (PMU KKVBY), one of the flagship projects under the Sabah Electricity Supply Special Project Task Force (PPKBES). The PMU KKBU project, initiated under the Tenth Malaysia Plan (RMKe-10), now benefits approximately 11,452 users in the Tanjung Aru and greater Kota Kinabalu area. It involved the installation of 132kV and 33kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) equipment and a 132/33/11kV transformer, replacing the outdated 66/11kV system. It also supports a new 33kV cable line to the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA), significantly enhancing power supply reliability in the strategic area. Six other completed projects under PPKBES include: 132kV Labuan-Sipitang Interconnection Project (Phase 1 – Package 2): Valued at RM34.92 million, the project involved a 7km stretch of 275kV transmission towers from Megalong PMU to the Sindumin border, linking Sabah to Lawas, Sarawak. Completed on 2 September 2024, it awaits the final segment by Sarawak Energy, expected in September 2025. Once operational, it will enable the import of up to 30MW of electricity from Sarawak, with a transmission capacity of up to 500MW, enhancing cross-border energy sharing under the ASEAN Power Grid initiative. 33/11kV Ranau Main Distribution Substation (PPU): Costing RM31.3 million, this substation began operations on 11 January 2024 and was completed on 15 March 2025. It connects Ranau to the Sabah electricity grid, eliminating reliance on the 18MW diesel-powered generating station, benefiting 15,620 consumers and reducing environmental impact and diesel subsidies. Batu Sapi PPU Project: Valued at RM30.02 million and operational since 13 December 2024, the project modernized the ageing system and improved power distribution efficiency for approximately 4,744 consumers in areas such as Karamunting, Bokara and Kampung Istimewa. Protection Online Monitoring Project: At a cost of RM42 million, this project upgraded communication systems and protection relays, including the installation of a 15km undersea fibre optic cable from Kampung Lambidan (Menumbok) to Tanjung Aru (Labuan). Completed on 5 February 2024, it strengthened grid protection between PMU Beaufort and PMU Rancha-Rancha. 132/33/11kV Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) PMU Project: Worth RM50.01 million and fully operational since 12 August 2024, this project increased firm capacity from 93.51MW to 131.60MW. It significantly reduced the System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI) and improved the 33kV network in Sulaman and Alamesra, directly benefiting over 5,000 users and supporting future expansions, including the UMS Hospital. 11kV Reinforcement System in Labuan: Completed on 9 November 2024 with a value of RM6.3 million, this project enhanced the protection system at Rancha-Rancha PPU and boosted capacity to support ongoing development in Labuan.

RM1 million intervention to reduce water supply disruptions at UMS
Fadillah briefed on the water supply problem at UMS today. – Bernama photo KOTA KINABALU (July 14): The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), is committed to assisting Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in reducing water supply disruptions via a short-term intervention plan costing RM1 million. This commitment was announced by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation Dato' Sri Haji Fadillah bin Haji Yusof during PETRA Squad's inspection at UMS today. This intervention plan will be implemented through collaboration between the Water Supply Department (JBA), PETRA and UMS. The execution is expected to directly benefit over 3,000 students, particularly those residing in Tun Mustapha Residential College and Tun Fuad Residential College, which are frequently affected by water supply disruptions. The intervention measures include: 1. Constructing a dedicated distribution pipeline to connect UMS's existing groundwater source; 2. Adding an underground water tank with an increased capacity of 0.13 million litres to boost water supply; 3. Installing automated modulating valves to stabilize water levels in UMS's service tanks. Earlier, Fadillah urged the Sabah state government to urgently address its water and electricity issues. 'Even though water and energy are state matters, we at the federal level will find ways to assist,' he said. Speaking at the PETRA Engagement Session with Sabah Media in 2025 here last night, Fadillah said the federal government, through the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, has allocated RM8.79 billion until June 2025 to implement 86 development projects in Sabah. He stated that the total allocation will be disbursed under the Fifth Rolling Plan (RP5) of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP). 'Sabah has received a fairly large allocation from the federal government … it is our commitment to resolve two key issues in Sabah: water and energy. 'Because without energy and water, there can be no economic growth in Sabah,' he said. He said the MADANI government is always striving to ensure that Sabah continues to prosper together as a big Malaysian family. Therefore, Sabah's progress is not only the responsibility of this state, but of the entire nation. 'With strong federal-state relations, we can build a more prosperous, just as well as sustainable state and country, with the support of a free and trustworthy media and a united people,' he said. The Petra Jaya member of parliament said Sabah holds immense potential, particularly in transforming its natural beauty into tourism attractions. In 2023, Sabah recorded 2.613 million tourist arrivals, with the figure projected to rise to 3.147 million in 2024. 'With more strategic planning and through the media's role in promoting Sabah, we are confident the state can attract even more tourists. 'This isn't just about tourism. Tourists bring economic benefits — they spend, stay in hotels, and eat — generating employment and boosting the local economy. 'If marketed properly, Sabah can become a world-class destination. Tourism is central to this.' Fadillah also said the engagement session was intended as a platform for the media to better understand the role of PETRA and agencies under its auspices. 'We organised this session to foster closer ties and strengthen the relationship between the media and PETRA's top management,' he added.

Decision on Sabah's 40 pct revenue claim expected by September - Fadillah
Fadillah with Jeffrey and Ewon after the MA63 meeting at Menara Kinabalu today. – Bernama photo KOTA KINABALU (July 14): The decision on Sabah's 40 per cent revenue claim under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) is expected to be finalised before the Malaysia Day celebration on Sept 16. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the Sabah government had submitted proposed solutions regarding the long-standing 40 per cent revenue claim during a special meeting of the Technical Committee under the MA63 Implementation Action Council (MTPMA63), held at Menara Kinabalu. Fadillah, who also chairs the committee, said that each proposed solution would be presented to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim ahead of the next MTPMA63 meeting, scheduled for Sept 12 in Kuala Lumpur. 'At that meeting, we will determine the appropriate course of action, whether an interim solution or otherwise, as we must also consider the ongoing court case, filed by the Sabah Law Society, regarding the 40 per cent revenue claim,' he said. 'In legal terms, there are limitations that prevent us from finalising a solution without a decision from the court. However, what we are seeking is a resolution outside the court's jurisdiction,' he told reporters after chairing the committee meeting at Menara Kinabalu, here today. A High Court here has fixed August 7 for e-review of a judicial review brought by SLS to get declaration on 40 percent entitlement grant for Sabah which allegedly had not been reviewed for 48 years since 1974. The meeting was also attended by Sabah Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan; and Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick. Meanwhile, Jeffrey said that the special meeting was productive, and that the Sabah government had submitted proposals concerning the 40 per cent revenue claim, which will be reviewed by the MTPMA63. Meanwhile, Fadillah paid a courtesy call on the Yang Dipertua Negeri of Sabah, Tun Musa Aman, at Istana Seri Kinabalu here yesterday. In a post on his official Facebook page, Fadillah, who is also the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, said it was his first courtesy call on Tun Musa since his appointment as the 11th Yang Dipertua Negeri of Sabah on Jan 1. 'The visit is a gesture of respect, as I have not had the opportunity to pay a courtesy call on Tuan Yang Terutama Tun and to brief him on the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation's (PETRA) plans to assist Sabah in the energy and water sectors,' he said. According to the Deputy Prime Minister, he also touched on the Special Meeting of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 Implementation Action Council Technical Committee with the Sabah government, as well as the implementation of the two-day PETRA Squad programme startingn today. 'Tuan Yang Terutama Tun expressed his wish for me to discuss further with Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor ways to develop the state, enabling the people of Sabah to enjoy its benefits and contribute to its progress,' he said.
