KOTA KINABALU: Five photographers from Sabah and Sarawak, including New Straits Times Press (NSTP) freelancer Lano Lan, took part in the Kepri Photo Community Gathering 2025 held in Indonesia.
Others included Tawau-based photographer Muslianshah Masri, freelance photojournalist Herry Naha, and landscape photographer Bani Hasyim, among others.
The regional event, held from July 14 to 16, drew over 100 photographers from across Southeast Asia.
Supported by Kepulauan Riau (Kepri) Governor Ansar Ahmad, it showcased the province's tourism appeal through photography.
Participants visited Batam city, Pulau Belakang Padang and nearby islands, capturing daily life, cultural landmarks, and natural scenery. Among the highlighted sites were Vihara Budhi Bhakti, Masjid Muhammad Cheng Hoo, Masjid Agung Batam and Jembatan Barelang.
Lano's work included shots of schoolchildren commuting by boat, villagers at kopitiams, and fishermen at dawn. The event ended with a gala attended by Deputy Governor Nyanyang Haris Pratamura, who praised the effort to strengthen regional ties.
Lano, 50, from Kiulu, also visited Penyengat island, known for its historical significance as the seat of the Riau-Lingga Sultanate and birthplace of Raja Ali Haji.
"It was a journey of stories, poetry, and Malay pride," said Lano, a contributor to NSTP for over a decade.
The event, first held in 2024, is part of Kepri's strategy to develop itself as an Asean cultural and photo tourism hub.

Moh (left) hands over a souvenir to Chieng. SIBU (July 30): More international events should be held here to promote sports tourism in Sibu, said Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng. He said sports not only brings people together but can help showcase what Sibu has to offer to the world. 'Every visitor becomes an ambassador – sharing Sibu's charm and stories when they return home,' he said at the opening ceremony of the Sarawak International Volleyball Invitational 2025 at Rajang Park Indoor Volleyball Stadium on Tuesday night. A total of 13 teams are taking part in the week-long championship. The teams are six men's teams from Thailand, Hong Kong, Johor, Miri, Sarawak Senior and Sarawak Junior and seven women's teams including two from Thailand, Mongolia, Taipei, Sarawak Senior, Sarawak Junior and Johor. Chieng said the presence of these international teams will transform the event into a true international gathering united by the love for volleyball. 'Tonight's tournament is more than just about volleyball competition. It symbolises friendship, cultural exchange, and the chance to learn from each other.' Chieng hoped all the guests, athletes and supporters would take some time to explore Sibu, a town known for its rich cultural diversity and warm hospitality. 'Sibu is often described as the 'Heartland of Sarawak's Culture', where you can experience the unique blend of Chinese, Malay, Iban, and Melanau traditions. 'I warmly encourage everyone to discover our local cuisine, from the famous 'kampua mee' and 'kompia' to freshly prepared Sibu-style 'dian bian hu' and our local tropical fruits. 'Beyond food, Sibu offers beautiful places such as the Sibu Central Market, the iconic Tua Pek Kong Temple, and the Rajang River, which is the longest river in Malaysia,' he said. Chieng also thanked the organisers for linking this tournament with the preparations for the Malaysia Games (Sukma) next year. 'This reflects our long-term commitment to developing sports excellence and nurturing new talent.' Also present were Sarawak Volleyball Association president Tan Sri Moh Ung Sing and Sibu Volleyball Association chairman Dato Moh Wung Ming. international events joseph chieng Sibu sports tourism
