Hong Kong Science Fair showcases local students' AI and tech innovations
Hong Kong is rapidly emerging as a global hub for innovation and technology (I&T), with a strong focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and the cultivation of young talent. Driven by forward-thinking government strategies, the city is accelerating advancements in AI and other cutting-edge technologies and creating dynamic opportunities for the next generation of tech pioneers to build a thriving innovation ecosystem.
A vital part of this trend is the organisation of I&T events that inspire and equip young minds with the tools to explore new technologies, collaborate with industry leaders, and transform bold ideas into reality.
The Hong Kong Science Fair (Science Fair), organised by the Hong Kong Innovation Foundation (HKIF) annually, supports the local innovation ecosystem. Returning for its fourth edition on June 28 and 29 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, the event has become an important showcase for inventions. Professionals, academics, families, and science enthusiasts gather to explore new ideas and engage with the next wave of innovators.

The Science Fair attracts tens of thousands of visitors, offering hands-on workshops and a chance to discover 120 shortlisted student projects under the inspiring theme 'Think Big, Be Innovative.'

Hong Kong will build more subsidised homes in its new I&T hub near the border with mainland China to cater to the increasing needs of middle-class families and align with the city's strategy to attract top talent, the housing minister has said. Secretary for Housing Winnie Ho Wing-yin also outlined her plans to make public flats in the Northern Metropolis, where the San Tin Technopole innovation and technology (I&T) hub is located, more liveable by integrating them into nature and old villages. 'The technopole is a base camp for new productivity and industry. It is also a base camp for talent, whose requirements, income, affordability and standards for their children's education, among other things, will be higher,' she said on Wednesday last week. 'I think the proportion of subsidised sale homes would be adjusted higher to align with the area's position.' Hongkongers who fulfil asset and income requirements are able to apply for subsidised sale flats. The technopole is a flagship project in the Northern Metropolis, which aims to turn 30,000 hectares (74,132 acres) of land into an engine for economic growth and a housing hub with over 500,000 new flats, accommodating a population of about 2.5 million and around 650,000 jobs.

China could counter US tech curbs by engaging Global South on AI, analysts say
China needs to engage and cooperate more effectively with the Global South on AI governance to counter US moves to hobble its technological progress, according to analysts. They also said that as the US retreated from its leadership role it could be 'sidelined during a critical period' as the global norms and rules around artificial intelligence were shaped, while China continued to push forward conversations on governance. Jiang Yuhao, a researcher with the Institute of Public Policy, an independent think tank under the South China University of Technology, said China could move beyond its great power rivalry with the US by pushing for innovation in cooperation with the Global South. 'By promoting collaborative creation and equitable sharing of advanced technologies, this approach would offer a more effective response to the US strategy of 'small yard, high fence' and supply chain decoupling,' he said. Jiang said China should partner with the Global South to deliver inclusive AI infrastructure, promote tech sharing and fair data access, and co-develop ethical frameworks that addressed diverse regional concerns.
