Stag party-goer caught with cocaine after resisting arrest and shouting abuse at gardaí
A Scottish stag party-goer who was caught with cocaine after resisting arrest and shouting abuse at gardaí has been told by a judge not to expect "to skip off home" without consequences.
Alistair Wright (37), a self-employed joiner from Crieff in Scotland, appeared before Judge Anne Watkin at Dún Laoghaire District Court, where she said she had 'no tolerance' for people bringing cocaine into public places and then "taking on" the guards.
The court heard that Wright had been in Dublin for a friend's stag and had been drinking all day with a group who had booked rooms at the Clayton Hotel in Donnybrook. By 8.30pm, tensions among the group escalated and staff were forced to call gardaí due to the group's behaviour.
'It must have been bad,' Judge Watkin remarked. 'It takes a lot for a hotel to ask a group of people to leave at half eight in the evening - that says it all.'
When gardaí arrived, Wright became aggressive and abusive. He was asked to leave but told staff and gardaí to 'f**k off,' Sergeant Caoimmhe Conway told the court.
The court heard that Wright refused to comply with directions, resisted arrest and was ultimately found to have one gram of cocaine in his possession. While he did not strike the gardaí, the court heard he resisted putting his hands behind his back and had to be restrained.
'I've no patience for cocaine,' Judge Watkin said. 'Unlike cannabis or ecstasy, it's one drug that makes people aggressive - and he's lucky things didn't end even worse.'
'He refused to cooperate. This is how gardaí get injured,' she added.
'Most people sober up when a guard appears,' Judge Watkin said. 'They don't take them on. But he refused to cooperate. This could have resulted in someone getting injured.'
The court heard that Wright made no reply when charged and has no previous convictions. He pleaded guilty to possessing cocaine and to multiple public order offences, including engaging in threatening and abusive behaviour, failing to comply with garda directions and resisting a peace officer.
His defence counsel, Sylvia Maria Crowley BL, said Wright was deeply embarrassed by the incident. She said he is a father of two and had 'never taken cocaine before - it was a one-off, completely out of character.'
Ms Crowley asked if her client could be spared a conviction, but Judge Watkin said the matter was too serious - and that a Section 19 public order offence could warrant a jail sentence.
'He knew he had cocaine on him. If he had any cop-on at all, he wouldn't have gotten himself arrested while carrying it. You don't get to be that out of control in a public place and expect no consequences,' she said.
The judge ordered a probation report and urine analysis, noting she was open to considering a community service order, but emphasised that Wright would not simply be allowed to walk away.
Ms Crowley said engaging with probation services might be difficult as Wright lives and works in Scotland, but Judge Watkin made clear that custody remained on the table.
'Just because he's not living here doesn't mean he gets to skip off home to Scotland,' she said.
She adjourned the matter to 10 November next for finalisation.

The US president is currently on a visit to the country and has been spotted playing golf over the weekend. 'I've got a bomb' A witness said he woke up suddenly around 8am, under an hour after taking off from Luton, to the man coming out of the toilets at the back of the plane causing a commotion. Advertisement READ MORE NEWS The passenger - who did not wish to be named - told us: 'He literally came out of the toilet shouting 'Allahu Akbar' with his hands above his head. 'Then he said 'I've got a bomb, I've got a bomb' - at this point people were confused. 'I thought he was joking, I mean it's a weird joke.' The 39-year-old - who was flying into the Scottish city for his dad's birthday party - went on to say: 'He pushed the airline staff and was being aggressive towards them. The three guys pinning him down, they landed whilst pinning him down. It was incredible. "I've never seen that before. The airline staff, they were all girls, they were really shaken up by it, but they were super professional.' Advertisement He added: 'Some of the passengers were crying because they were shaken up. It was just a bit surreal.' He said they had managed to get the man's wallet out of his pocket and he appeared to be an Indian national, and he was told he was carrying a refugee status card. As the plane came into land, the witness said he held up one of the passengers sat on the 'bomber' to prevent him toppling over. The witness, from London, and others involved were asked to stay behind to give statements and hand over video, while the other passengers were taken off the plane. In one piece of footage, as the offender is led out of the plane in handcuffs, he turns back and asks "my phone and wallet?" and someone can be heard saying "f*** off" before several passengers laugh. Sex assault claim against late Alex Salmond is dismissed
Police Scotland said no further action will be taken following a complaint made last year in the wake of the former first minister's death, aged 69. Mr Salmond, who left the Scottish National Party in 2018 and later established the pro-independence Alba Party, suffered a heart attack and died while attending a conference in North Macedonia last October. One month later, the police force said it had received a report of a 'non-recent sexual assault'. It is understood that the case has been closed owing to insufficient evidence. A report was not submitted to the Crown Office. Mr Salmond served as first minister under the SNP from 2007 to 2014 and led the party through the independence referendum. He resigned from the party in 2018 when allegations of sexual misconduct emerged and ultimately set up the Alba Party in 2021. His latter years were, however, dominated by claims and counter-claims about his conduct. In 2019, Mr Salmond successfully sued the Scottish government, led by his former protege Nicola Sturgeon, for its handling of an investigation into complaints of sexual harassment made against him. He was awarded £500,000 (€575,000) after the inquiry was ruled to be 'tainted with apparent bias'. The former first minister was subsequently charged with 13 sexual offences, including attempted rape, but was acquitted on all counts after the 2020 trial. During his evidence to the court, Mr Salmond said he had a 'sleepy cuddle' with one complainer in his official residence. However, he described the claims made about his alleged conduct as 'deliberate fabrications for a political purpose' or 'exaggerations'. Mr Salmond's lawyer told the court the former first minister 'could certainly have been a better man', but had not committed any crimes. An inquiry into the government's handling of complaints against Mr Salmond found Ms Sturgeon had misled MSPs over a meeting with her predecessor in her home in 2018, but cleared her of breaching the ministerial code.

Wife 'decapitated by husband who then carried her head to police station'
A horrific incident has occurred in India where a man allegedly decapitated his wife and then presented her severed head to the police. Shankar, 28, from Hennagara near Bengaluru, is accused of committing the gruesome act after he reportedly found his wife in a compromising position with another man at their rented home. Local police sources have described the couple as having a "loving marriage" before they moved to the area recently. On June 3, Shankar is said to have gone to work and returned late to find his spouse allegedly with another man. Following an alleged attack on both parties, he is claimed to have beheaded his wife and then turned himself in at the Suryanagar Police Station. There are reports suggesting the couple was experiencing marital problems. The wife had reportedly expressed a wish to separate but still visited the house frequently, leading to ongoing disputes, neighbours say. The final argument on Thursday is reported to have escalated, culminating in the tragic killing, reports the Mirror. After the deed, Shankar is said to have ridden his motorcycle to the local police station with his wife's severed head and gave himself up to the authorities. Suryanagar police are conducting an inquiry into the matter, with more information to be released in time. Following a gruesome event in South Dakota, US, 34-year-old Bowen Fladland is accused of decapitating his 70-year-old mother, Marlene Fladland, and burying her remains in the front garden of his residence. He faces charges of first-degree and second-degree murder earlier this month. Police discovered the victim's body on July 8, although investigators suspect she met her untimely death at least three days prior. In another shocking case, it has come to light that a cocaine-addled Scottish postman beheaded his girlfriend after lamenting that her waitress shifts left him feeling "lonely." Ewan Methven brutally murdered 21-year-old Phoenix Spencer-Horn in her East Kilbride home, using three knives to stab her 20 times. The High Court in Glasgow was informed that Methven viciously attacked his partner, severing her head and attempting to dismember her limbs and torso. During a call to emergency services, he confessed to the operator that he had been "trying to muster up the courage to phone" following the incident, claiming he "totally blacked out through the thing." The 27 year old awaits sentencing this month.
